The Possum that wouldn't let go....
« on: April 28, 2006, 06:23:00 AM »
Yesterday when I woke up I looked outside to my surprise I saw a possum on top of the fence that makes up the dog's pen. It was just sitting there.

So I thought I'd go rescue him before the dogs got to him. I locked up the dogs and walked out to the end of the pen. Then I started to gently push this little creature off the fence with a shovel handle. However, he didn't want to leave. He hung on for all he was worth. Apparently he thought he was going someplace good and was obviously unware of the danger (the dogs). I was finally able to get him to let go. After sitting on the ground for a couple of minutes he wandered off in the opposite direction.

How often are we like this possum. Sin looks so very attractive that we don't want anyone to side track on the way. We may go to church and hear a message that convicts us or a true friend may say something because they are worried about us. But we are stubborn. We want what we want and it (sin) just seems so good. So we continue to hang on to our ways. Then finally... we decide to give in to the Good Shepherd, the one who has been looking for and pursuing us.

We relunctanly let go. But once we do we come to our senses and finally see the danger and follow the Lord in the opposite direction.

By communion with God in nature, the mind is uplifted, and the heart finds rest.  {DA 291.1}

Amen, Brother Jim!

You say "we come to our senses".....yes, that is a good way to put it. Like Paul in Romans 7, it is hopeful that many will discover that they are indeed dead in their sins. Blindness is quite dangerous. We are very "dull" after six thousand years of sin. It is hard for us to come to a basic understanding that we are born in sin and are quite sick. We have too many "teachers" that want to make us feel good about our condition while the Holy Spirit is trying show us our true selves so that we will turn to Christ.

We are indeed too much like the possum. We are born into the world and we like it too much.

Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.
