San Francisco Earthquake, Mild

Quote
An earthquake just hit the San Francisco Bay Area at approximately 8:05pm. I thought it was a big tractor at first since they are doing home construction behind our house. But not at this hour. The earthquake lasted for a good 12 or more seconds. Preliminary reports say the earthquake registered 5.6 on the Richter scale located 9 miles northeast of San Jose, 5 miles north of Milpitas. That sounds way too close to my house. People have felt it as far as Marin County, Petaluma, Sacramento and Modesto. There has been 4 aftershocks already. None of it we have felt.

Can you in California confirm this?

Moderate Earthquake Shakes Bay Area

By RON HARRIS – 9 hours ago

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A moderate earthquake shook the San Francisco Bay area Tuesday night, rattling homes and nerves, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 and struck shortly after 8 p.m., about 9 miles northeast of San Jose, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Residents reported feeling the quake, which lasted about a minute, as far east as Sacramento and as far north as Sonoma in California wine country.

The California Highway Patrol has received no reports of damage or injuries, spokesman Tom Marshall said.

The quake was centered in the Diablo Range foothills east of San Jose, not far from the home of the city's mayor, Chuck Reed.

Pictures fell off the walls of Reed's house, but the mayor said there was no major damage there.

"It was a pretty strong ride here, a lot of shaking but nothing broken," Reed told The Associated Press in a phone interview. "I've talked to a few people, and we have no reports of injuries or damage. There was a lot of shaking, but it wasn't the big one."

Rod Foo, who lives in southern San Jose about 10 miles from the epicenter, said that everything in his house shook for several seconds, but that the electricity never went out and his telephone was still working.

"I could hear it coming up the street before it hit the house," Foo said. "I thought it was the kids messing around at first; then I felt the house shaking and I knew it was an earthquake. ... It was rattling for a long time and really loud."

The USGS reported at least seven aftershocks, all measuring less than magnitude 2.0.

Allison Guimard, 25, a technology executive who lives in Mountain View, about 18 miles west of the epicenter, said that her china started shaking. It was the first significant earthquake for she and her husband, Pierre, who moved there from New York six months ago.

"It felt like the apartment was rolling; shaking and rolling," said Pierre Guimard, 25, a home entertainment installer. "Almost like a boat on the water."

Looks like the damage has been insignificant so far.  Thankfully....

Earthquake Advisory Issued For San Francisco Bay Area

October 31, 2007 Read Here

In response to Tuesday evening’s magnitude-5.6 earthquake near the junction of the Calaveras and Hayward faults, the following statement was issued by the California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council, a panel of scientists chaired by the State Geologist that advises the Director of the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) on the scientific validity of earthquake forecasts and seismic activity in areas where damaging earthquakes have occurred in the past.

“A magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred at 8:05 Tuesday evening (30 October 2007). The earthquake occurred near the junction of the Calaveras and Hayward faults in the southern San Francisco Bay Area. Both of these faults are known active faults capable of producing large, damaging earthquakes.

“CEPEC believes that this evening’s earthquake has significantly increased the probability above the normal level for a damaging earthquake along the Calaveras and/or Hayward faults within the next several days. However, the overall likelihood of such an event is still low. Scientists will be continuing to monitor the situation and advise OES of any changes.

In response to the CEPEC evaluation of this earthquake, OES recommends that residents of the San Francisco Bay region review their family emergency plans, check their emergency supplies, identify the “safe” and “potential danger” spots in each room, remove breakables from locations from which they can fall and cause injury, and stay tuned to the radio or television for further information. OES also recommends that government agencies and businesses review their plans. The “advisory” applies to the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano and Sonoma.
