FDA Alerts the Public to Uncle Chen and Lian How Brand Dry Spice Product Recall
Distribution Primarily in California, Western States

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting the public to a voluntary recall by Union International Food Company (Union City, Calif.) of the company’s dry spice products. The recall is based on an investigation of an ongoing foodborne illness outbreak of Salmonella Rissen. This investigation is being conducted in collaboration with state health officials in California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The company’s products are distributed in these states and Arizona.

The dry spices being recalled were sold primarily to ethnic restaurants, wholesalers, and retail outlets under the brand names “Lian How” and “Uncle Chen.”  At this time, the distribution of products appears confined to the western region of the country.

The recalled products sold at retail outlets include 5-ounce plastic jars of the following Uncle Chen brand dry spices: Whole White Pepper, Ground White Pepper, Whole Black Pepper, and Ground Black Pepper.  The Lian How brand products are generally sold to restaurants and wholesalers; a full list of recalled products appears below.

A total of 42 cases of Salmonella Rissen infection have been reported to the CDC by health officials in California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Most of the reported cases (33) are in California.

Information, including epidemiologic information and preliminary test results on samples collected, from health authorities in the affected states, links white and black pepper as foods possibly associated with illnesses. The FDA and California officials are inspecting the Union City, Calif. processing facility and have collected environmental and product samples.

The FDA advises consumers who may have purchased these dry spices to dispose of them.  Restaurants, retail outlets, and other purchasers should stop using the recalled dry spices immediately and dispose of them. Also, the public is advised to discard any food made with these products and to remove the dry spices from dispensers on consumer tables and at kitchen work stations. All equipment and utensils that have come into contact with these dry spices should be washed, rinsed and sanitized before further use.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.  Individuals who are experiencing these symptoms should contact a doctor immediately or go to an emergency room for evaluation.

The FDA will provide updates and recall information as the investigation continues.

It seems that I hear everyday people saying that our food supply isn't safe, that we need to grow our own food, etc.

Unfortunately, it seems like the world is warning us, rather than the other way around?  ???

April Schildmeyer, News Producer

UPDATED: 8:51 am MDT July 27, 2009

Recent Salmonella Outbreak Difficult To Treat
The strain of salmonella found in recalled beef is resistant to many antibiotics and cooking is not a reliable way to kill it, according to the state Department of Public Health and Environment.

The Denver-based King Soopers grocery chain on Wednesday recalled 466,236 pounds of ground beef products that were distributed to stores in Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

Fourteen people in Colorado became ill after eating the meat.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 28th, 2009 - Frontera Produce, of Edinburg, TX, is voluntarily recalling one lot of cilantro because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. The company is working with the FDA to inform consumers of this recall, and no illnesses have been reported to date.

Salmonella, is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The lot in question, 118122, was distributed to two retail store chains in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Louisiana, and New Mexico. Both chains were provided with case tag identification and have been advised of the recall. Frontera Produce is issuing this voluntary recall as an additional measure to advise consumers to destroy the cilantro described above, purchased between July 20, 2009 and July 27, 2009. The cilantro bunches in question have a white twist tie with pink lettering spelling the word 'Cilantro' and the UPC number 033383801049.

The recall involves only one lot of cilantro and does not involve any other products.

This product originated in Mexico and was procured by Frontera Produce, who subsequently routinely tested for contaminants as part of their internal food safety program.

"Frontera Produce continues to stay committed to the highest levels of food safety, and strives to work within the industry to bring food safety to the forefront. We continually look for ways to enhance our protocol and stay committed to providing outstanding products to our consumers," said Will Steele, President and CEO.

The companies know that if they put on the market food that will kill people, they will have to pay for it. So, they recall food because they have found evidence of contamination. That is usually the reason why they try to get product off the shelves. There is often negligence involved in such things. The government does not protect us as they ought to. Food producers often are more concerned about their profits than our health. It is a sign of the soon return of Christ. As it was in the days of Noah, so it is today.

Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

Absolutely nothing is safe to eat out there anymore. We need to be growing our own foods, joining CSA's (community supported agriculture) if we don't have garden space, and preserving our own foods. Cooking from scratch and not eating any prepackaged foods is the only safe thing.  :-[

Product was distributed in the following 10 states: Arizona (30 cases), California (574 cases), Colorado (35 cases), Florida (60 Cases), Iowa (3 cases), Illinois (1 case), Missouri (7 cases), Tennessee (5 cases), Texas (278 cases) and Wisconsin (12 cases). These cases were distributed within both retail and foodservice outlets.

The product was shipped in a brown wax carton under the Muranaka Label with a parsley silhouette on the side. The bunches were banded using a red rubber band. The lot code 0023909 is on a sticker on the outside of the carton.

No reports of illness have been reported.

The recall was as the result of a voluntary sampling program conducted in cooperation with the FDA which revealed that the finished products contained the bacteria. Muranaka Farm, Inc. continues to work in cooperation with the FDA on this matter.

Consumers with questions may contact Muranaka Farm, Inc. at 805-529-0201 8AM-PM PST with any questions. We also urge consumers to visit their retailer to determine if the product they have purchased is from Muranaka Farm and is associated with Lot Code 0023909.

"The health of all consumers is of the utmost importance to every employee of our company. With that in mind, even though this product is over two weeks old and most likely past the useable shelf life, we have taken immediate actions to ensure that all product is accounted for and out of the supply chain. We are working with all of our customers to insure this product is no longer being distributed." said Greg Emi, President, Muranaka Farm, Inc.

Because of Muranaka Farm's trace recall program the company was able to immediately determine which customers purchased the product in question. Muranaka's food safety protocols also ensure the company was able to determine the amount of cases harvested, the crew harvesting the product, and the field on which the parsley was grown and harvested.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- September 18, 2009 - Ippolito International, LP of Salinas, California is voluntarily recalling 1,715 cartons of bunched spinach, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

The voluntary recall comes after routine random testing of bunched spinach in Michigan by the USDA Microbial Data Program, collected and analyzed by the Michigan Department of Agriculture, tested positive.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The voluntary recall is limited to 1,715 cartons. One thousand, five hundred fifteen of the cartons were packed in the "Queen Victoria" brand. This product was distributed to Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York and British Columbia, Ontario and Manitoba, Canada. It was distributed to retail, foodservice and wholesale buyers.

Two hundred of the cartons were packed in the "Tubby" label and were distributed in California and New York to retail and wholesale customers.

The "Queen Victoria" product was packed in cardboard cartons with "Spinach" printed on the side panel, in wire bound crates or Reusable Plastic Containers. The product was harvested September 1 through September 3.

The 12 and 24 count spinach bunches were bound with a twist tie which says "Queen Victoria Spinach Produce of USA PLU 4090 UPC 33383 65200."

The cartons were labeled with the following Code Date Stickers which can be located on the outside edge panel of the carton. The stickers read as follows:

10522441
5   205
(Harvested September 1, 2009)

10522451
5   205
(Harvested September 2, 2009)

10522461
5   205
(Harvested September 3, 2009)

The "Tubby" product was packed in cardboard cartons with "Tubby" printed on the side panel. The cartons were labeled with the following Code Date Stickers which can be located on the outside edge panel of the carton. The stickers read as follows:

10522451
5   205
(Harvested September 2, 2009)

The 24 count spinach bunches packed in the "Tubby" label were distributed in California and New York. They were bound with a generic bunched spinach twist tie which says "Spinach Produce of USA PLU 4090 UPC 33383 65200."

Consumers should understand the numbers provided: PLU 4060 and UPC 33383 65200
are located on the majority of bunched spinach twist ties packed by the majority of spinach shippers in the United States. Those numbers do not necessarily reference the single lot to which the recall is limited. The only numbers that reference the recalled lot would be found on the carton.

Consumers should check with where they purchased the product to see if it was indeed from a carton with the specific Code Date Sticker referenced above.

Ippolito International immediately identified the specific harvest lot and all buyers who received the product. The buyers were contacted and instructed to destroy any product remaining in inventory. No other Ippolito International products or packs are involved in this recall.

"Our primary concern and commitment is for the well-being of the consumer. This voluntary recall is precautionary to reduce risk to the lowest level," said Butch Corda, Ippolito International General Manager.

Consumers who have purchased "Queen Victoria" or "Tubby" bunched spinach which is subject to this voluntary recall are urged to dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-831-772-9991 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PDT.

... Recalls Bunch Spinach Because ofPossible Health Risk Nationwide and Canada

The price of spinach nearly doubled here after the last big scare. I should have planted more spinach in the garden this year and frozen or canned it. Maybe there's still time before the last frost, I'll have to check into it tomorrow.

The question has to come to mind "why is salmonella in vegetables?"

The most obvious answer is that the vegetables have become contaminated with animal feces or human disease. When I think about it, I go to the most obvious possibility of transmission. Three things seem to be primary. Handling by workers who contaminate the food. It seems like there is too much contamination for this to be the reason for so many recalls.

Next, the water used for processing is contaminated. This is highly possible, but ought to be caught by testing. The most probable cause from what see, is that the soil is contaminated by animal feces (manure). I have been warning our people about using animal manure in their gardens. Many still use it. In the commercial ag industry, it appears to be a source of fertilizer more and more. In the Central California area where much of the produce is grown, there are many dairies. They produce a tremendous amount of manure. My guess is that the water and the fertilizers are carrying salmonella as well as other germs that cause human disease and death. Some diseases manifest quickly, others do not. We above all people ought to be wide awake to the seriousness of this situation. We understand the connection between disease in animals and disease in humans while many sleep through this crisis.

I have not gone looking for a connection between manure and salmonella until today. Here is what came up immediately:

December 7, 2005. Addition of animal manure to soil can provide opportunity for Salmonella contamination of soil, water, and food.
