Title: Quack question
Post by: Richard Sherwin on April 16, 2005, 09:35:00 AM
All my life I've been told that duck is an unclean meat because it has web feet. Can someone please tell me where that is found in the Bible. The other day a friend said he liked duck and when I mentioned it was unclean he asked me to show him, alas I could not. Help? Quack?

Ok Ok I know that flesh food is not healthy but that is not the question.

Here is the only place that I know of where the issue of birds, clean and unclean comes up in Scripture is in Deuteronomy:

14:11   [Of] all clean birds ye shall eat.
14:12   But these [are they] of which ye shall not eat: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the osprey,
14:13   And the glede, and the kite, and the vulture after his kind,
14:14   And every raven after his kind,
14:15   And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckoo, and the hawk after his kind,
14:16   The little owl, and the great owl, and the swan,
14:17   And the pelican, and the gier eagle, and the cormorant,
14:18   And the stork, and the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

So not sure what to say, but I have eaten duck after I became a Seventh-day Adventist.

My understanding was that any bird that eats flesh is not to be eaten. Any animal that eats flesh is not to be eaten.

So where do ducks fit into this I do not know.

Will still research.

It's quite possible I've been believing one of those "Adventist Urban Legends", of which there are many, like Paul Harvey's wife is SDA and the rock group Black Sabbath started at Andrews University  :)

I did a Bible check on Web feet and nothing came up. Same with EGW. Strange, I thought there was something about that...only never thought it had to do with duck. I have been SDA for over 50 years and I always thought Duck was a clean meat. Don't eat any now...but would eat duck back then with no problem. Let us know if you find anything.

You mean Paul Harvey's wife is not a SDA?
How about Magic Johnson's Mother?

I think someone should start a fun thread titled Adventist Urban Legends. I know I've heard some strange ones through the years, I've even heard a few urban legends, not just SDA ones, told as truth from the pulput on Sabbath mornings  :)

Ellen White had an experiene in eating duck:

"Our provisions have been very low for some days. Many of our supplies have gone. . . . We expected supplies three days ago certainly, but none has come. Willie went to the lake for water. We heard his gun and found he had shot two ducks. This is really a blessing, for we need something to live
upon."--Ms 12, 1873, p. 3.  (7MR 346)

We lived in Phx. Az. for 18 years. Paul Harvey and his wife go to the Camelback church. Far as I know he is not baptized, but when in town they go to church. She is baptized far as I have always known.

It is my understanding that he has or had a housekeeper who was SDA. I don't believe his wife is. Every picture of her I've ever seen has her wearing much jewelry. Ever since I started listening to him back in the 70's he has shown much love and admiration towards Mrs. White and the SDA church. Also I believe his Saturday broadcast is taped on Friday. I don't know if this is so he can keep the Sabbath or not.
