It is with sadness that we share news of the passing of longstanding religious liberty advocate and disciple of Christ, Professor Roger Coon. Throughout his many years of service, Dr. Coon served the Seventh-day Adventist Church in many capacities: associate director of the White Estate; professor at both Andrews University and Pacific Union College; frequent author; and a key leader in the development of the Zaoksky Institute in Russia.
“Dr. Coon was a very early supporter of the North American Religious Liberty Association (NARLA), whose stature and wisdom added much needed gravitas to the venture in its fledging days,” said former executive director, James D. Standish.
A champion for Jesus, a defender of truth, and a great believer in religious liberty, Dr. Coon was the first recipient of NARLA’s A.T. Jones achievement award, presented at the 2005 Religious Liberty Dinner in Washington, D.C.
Said Liberty editor, Lincoln E. Steed, “This is a sad time for us and the Church, but another stalwart is now awaiting the soon return of the Lord he has so faithfully served.”
