Man was deceived; his mind was darkened by Satan's sophistry. The height and depth of the love of God he did not know. For him there was hope in a knowledge of God's love. By beholding His character he might be drawn back to God. Let the repenting sinner fix his eyes upon "the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29); and by beholding, he becomes changed. "God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself." 2 Corinthians 5:19. It would be well to spend a thoughtful hour a day contemplating the life of Christ. In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hailstorms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power.

Banks fail and property is consumed in very many ways. And the lesson for Christians? If your hopes are in the world, then you will be sadly hurt. If you have been working according to God's plans, then it is not a surprise nor will it crush your faith.
