Title: The Desire of Ages--62--The Feast at Simon's House
Post by: JimB on March 19, 2016, 04:21:54 PM
Chap. 62 - The Feast at Simon's House

     Simon of Bethany was accounted a disciple of Jesus. He was one of the few Pharisees who had openly joined Christ's followers. He acknowledged Jesus as a teacher, and hoped that He might be the Messiah, but he had not accepted Him as a Saviour. His character was not transformed; his principles were unchanged.
     Simon had been healed of the leprosy, and it was this that had drawn him to Jesus. He desired to show his gratitude, and at Christ's last visit to Bethany he made a feast for the Saviour and His disciples. This feast brought together many of the Jews. There was at this time much excitement at Jerusalem. Christ and His mission were attracting greater attention than ever before. Those who had come to the feast closely watched His movements, and some of them with unfriendly eyes.
     The Saviour had reached Bethany only six days before the Passover, and according to His custom had sought rest at the home of Lazarus. The crowds of travelers who passed on to the city spread the tidings that He was on His way to Jerusalem, and that He would rest over the Sabbath at Bethany. Among the people there was great enthusiasm. Many flocked to Bethany, some out of sympathy with Jesus, and others from curiosity to see one who had been raised from the dead.
     Many expected to hear from Lazarus a wonderful account of scenes witnessed after death. They were surprised that he told them nothing. He had nothing of this kind to tell. Inspiration declares, "The dead know not anything. . . . Their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished." Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6. But Lazarus did have a wonderful testimony to bear in regard to the work of Christ. He had been raised from the dead for this purpose. With assurance and power he declared that Jesus was the Son of God.
     The reports carried back to Jerusalem by the visitors to Bethany increased the excitement. The people were eager to see and hear Jesus. There was a general inquiry as to whether Lazarus would accompany Him to Jerusalem, and if the prophet would be crowned king at the Passover. The priests and rulers saw that their hold upon the people was still weakening, and their rage against Jesus grew more bitter. They could hardly wait for the opportunity of removing Him forever from their way. As time passed, they began to fear that after all He might not come to Jerusalem. They remembered how often He had baffled their murderous designs, and they were fearful that He had now read their purposes against Him, and would remain away. They could ill conceal their anxiety, and questioned among themselves, "What think ye, that He will not come to the feast?"
     A council of the priests and Pharisees was called. Since the raising of Lazarus the sympathies of the people were so fully with Christ that it would be dangerous to seize upon Him openly. So the authorities determined to take Him secretly, and carry on the trial as quietly as possible. They hoped that when His condemnation became known, the fickle tide of public opinion would set in their favor.
     Thus they proposed to destroy Jesus. But so long as Lazarus lived, the priests and rabbis knew that they were not secure. The very existence of a man who had been four days in the grave, and who had been restored by a word from Jesus, would sooner or later cause a reaction. The people would be avenged on their leaders for taking the life of One who could perform such a miracle. The Sanhedrin therefore decided that Lazarus also must die. To such lengths do envy and prejudice lead their slaves. The hatred and unbelief of the Jewish leaders had increased until they would even take the life of one whom infinite power had rescued from the grave.
     While this plotting was going on at Jerusalem, Jesus and His friends were invited to Simon's feast. At the table the Saviour sat with Simon, whom He had cured of a loathsome disease, on one side, and Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead, on the other. Martha served at the table, but Mary was earnestly listening to every word from the lips of Jesus. In His mercy, Jesus had pardoned her sins, He had called forth her beloved brother from the grave, and Mary's heart was filled with gratitude. She had heard Jesus speak of His approaching death, and in her deep love and sorrow she had longed to show Him honor. At great personal sacrifice she had purchased an alabaster box of "ointment of spikenard, very costly," with which to anoint His body. But now many were declaring that He was about to be crowned king. Her grief was turned to joy, and she was eager to be first in honoring her Lord. Breaking her box of ointment, she poured its contents upon the head and feet of Jesus; then, as she knelt weeping, moistening them with her tears, she wiped His feet with her long, flowing hair.
     She had sought to avoid observation, and her movements might have passed unnoticed, but the ointment filled the room with its fragrance, and published her act to all present. Judas looked upon this act with great displeasure. Instead of waiting to hear what Christ would say of the matter, he began to whisper his complaints to those near him, throwing reproach upon Christ for suffering such waste. Craftily he made suggestions that would be likely to cause disaffection.
     Judas was treasurer for the disciples, and from their little store he had secretly drawn for his own use, thus narrowing down their resources to a meager pittance. He was eager to put into the bag all that he could obtain. The treasure in the bag was often drawn upon to relieve the poor; and when something that Judas did not think essential was bought, he would say, Why is this waste? why was not the cost of this put into the bag that I carry for the poor? Now the act of Mary was in such marked contrast to his selfishness that he was put to shame; and according to his custom, he sought to assign a worthy motive for his objection to her gift. Turning to the disciples, he asked, "Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein." Judas had no heart for the poor. Had Mary's ointment been sold, and the proceeds fallen into his possession, the poor would have received no benefit.
     Judas had a high opinion of his own executive ability. As a financier he thought himself greatly superior to his fellow disciples, and he had led them to regard him in the same light. He had gained their confidence, and had a strong influence over them. His professed sympathy for the poor deceived them, and his artful insinuation caused them to look distrustfully upon Mary's devotion. The murmur passed round the table, "To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor."
     Mary heard the words of criticism. Her heart trembled within her. She feared that her sister would reproach her for extravagance. The Master, too, might think her improvident. Without apology or excuse she was about to shrink away, when the voice of her Lord was heard, "Let her alone; why trouble ye her?" He saw that she was embarrassed and distressed. He knew that in this act of service she had expressed her gratitude for the forgiveness of her sins, and He brought relief to her mind. Lifting His voice above the murmur of criticism, He said, "She hath wrought a good work on Me. For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but Me ye have not always. She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint My body to the burying."
     The fragrant gift which Mary had thought to lavish upon the dead body of the Saviour she poured upon His living form. At the burial its sweetness could only have pervaded the tomb; now it gladdened His heart with the assurance of her faith and love. Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus offered not their gift of love to Jesus in His life. With bitter tears they brought their costly spices for His cold, unconscious form. The women who bore spices to the tomb found their errand in vain, for He had risen. But Mary, pouring out her love upon the Saviour while He was conscious of her devotion, was anointing Him for the burial. And as He went down into the darkness of His great trial, He carried with Him the memory of that deed, an earnest of the love that would be His from His redeemed ones forever.
     Many there are who bring their precious gifts for the dead. As they stand about the cold, silent form, words of love are freely spoken. Tenderness, appreciation, devotion, all are lavished upon one who sees not nor hears. Had these words been spoken when the weary spirit needed them so much, when the ear could hear and the heart could feel, how precious would have been their fragrance!
     Mary knew not the full significance of her deed of love. She could not answer her accusers. She could not explain why she had chosen that occasion for anointing Jesus. The Holy Spirit had planned for her, and she had obeyed His promptings. Inspiration stoops to give no reason. An unseen presence, it speaks to mind and soul, and moves the heart to action. It is its own justification.
     Christ told Mary the meaning of her act, and in this He gave her more than He had received. "In that she hath poured this ointment on My body," He said, "she did it for My burial." As the alabaster box was broken, and filled the whole house with its fragrance, so Christ was to die, His body was to be broken; but He was to rise from the tomb, and the fragrance of His life was to fill the earth. Christ "hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor." Ephesians 5:2.
     "Verily I say unto you," Christ declared, "Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her." Looking into the future, the Saviour spoke with certainty concerning His gospel. It was to be preached throughout the world. And as far as the gospel extended, Mary's gift would shed its fragrance, and hearts would be blessed through her unstudied act. Kingdoms would rise and fall; the names of monarchs and conquerors would be forgotten; but this woman's deed would be immortalized upon the pages of sacred history. Until time should be no more, that broken alabaster box would tell the story of the abundant love of God for a fallen race.
     Mary's act was in marked contrast with that which Judas was about to do. What a sharp lesson Christ might have given him who had dropped the seed of criticism and evil thinking into the minds of the disciples! How justly the accuser might have been accused! He who reads the motives of every heart, and understands every action, might have opened before those at the feast dark chapters in the experience of Judas. The hollow pretense on which the traitor based his words might have been laid bare; for, instead of sympathizing with the poor, he was robbing them of the money intended for their relief. Indignation might have been excited against him for his oppression of the widow, the orphan, and the hireling. But had Christ unmasked Judas, this would have been urged as a reason for the betrayal. And though charged with being a thief, Judas would have gained sympathy, even among the disciples. The Saviour reproached him not, and thus avoided giving him an excuse for his treachery.
     But the look which Jesus cast upon Judas convinced him that the Saviour penetrated his hypocrisy, and read his base, contemptible character. And in commending Mary's action, which had been so severely condemned, Christ had rebuked Judas. Prior to this, the Saviour had never given him a direct rebuke. Now the reproof rankled in his heart. He determined to be revenged. From the supper he went directly to the palace of the high priest, where he found the council assembled, and he offered to betray Jesus into their hands.
     The priests were greatly rejoiced. These leaders of Israel had been given the privilege of receiving Christ as their Saviour, without money and without price. But they refused the precious gift offered them in the most tender spirit of constraining love. They refused to accept that salvation which is of more value than gold, and bought their Lord for thirty pieces of silver.
     Judas had indulged avarice until it overpowered every good trait of his character. He grudged the offering made to Jesus. His heart burned with envy that the Saviour should be the recipient of a gift suitable for the monarchs of the earth. For a sum far less than the box of ointment cost, he betrayed his Lord.
     The disciples were not like Judas. They loved the Saviour. But they did not rightly appreciate His exalted character. Had they realized what He had done for them, they would have felt that nothing bestowed upon Him was wasted. The wise men from the East, who knew so little of Jesus, had shown a truer appreciation of the honor due Him. They brought precious gifts to the Saviour, and bowed in homage before Him when He was but a babe, and cradled in a manger.
     Christ values acts of heartfelt courtesy. When anyone did Him a favor, with heavenly politeness He blessed the actor. He did not refuse the simplest flower plucked by the hand of a child, and offered to Him in love. He accepted the offerings of children, and blessed the givers, inscribing their names in the book of life. In the Scriptures, Mary's anointing of Jesus is mentioned as distinguishing her from the other Marys. Acts of love and reverence for Jesus are an evidence of faith in Him as the Son of God. And the Holy Spirit mentions, as evidences of woman's loyalty to Christ: "If she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work." 1 Timothy 5:10.
     Christ delighted in the earnest desire of Mary to do the will of her Lord. He accepted the wealth of pure affection which His disciples did not, would not, understand. The desire that Mary had to do this service for her Lord was of more value to Christ than all the precious ointment in the world, because it expressed her appreciation of the world's Redeemer. It was the love of Christ that constrained her. The matchless excellence of the character of Christ filled her soul. That ointment was a symbol of the heart of the giver. It was the outward demonstration of a love fed by heavenly streams until it overflowed.
     The work of Mary was just the lesson the disciples needed to show them that the expression of their love for Him would be pleasing to Christ. He had been everything to them, and they did not realize that soon they would be deprived of His presence, that soon they could offer Him no token of their gratitude for His great love. The loneliness of Christ, separated from the heavenly courts, living the life of humanity, was never understood or appreciated by the disciples as it should have been. He was often grieved because His disciples did not give Him that which He should have received from them. He knew that if they were under the influence of the heavenly angels that accompanied Him, they too would think no offering of sufficient value to declare the heart's spiritual affection.
     Their afterknowledge gave them a true sense of the many things they might have done for Jesus expressive of the love and gratitude of their hearts, while they were near Him. When Jesus was no longer with them, and they felt indeed as sheep without a shepherd, they began to see how they might have shown Him attentions that would have brought gladness to His heart. They no longer cast blame upon Mary, but upon themselves. Oh, if they could have taken back their censuring, their presenting the poor as more worthy of the gift than was Christ! They felt the reproof keenly as they took from the cross the bruised body of their Lord.
     The same want is evident in our world today. But few appreciate all that Christ is to them. If they did, the great love of Mary would be expressed, the anointing would be freely bestowed. The expensive ointment would not be called a waste. Nothing would be thought too costly to give for Christ, no self-denial or self-sacrifice too great to be endured for His sake.
     The words spoken in indignation, "To what purpose is this waste?" brought vividly before Christ the greatest sacrifice ever made,--the gift of Himself as the propitiation for a lost world. The Lord would be so bountiful to His human family that it could not be said of Him that He could do more. In the gift of Jesus, God gave all heaven. From a human point of view, such a sacrifice was a wanton waste. To human reasoning the whole plan of salvation is a waste of mercies and resources. Self-denial and wholehearted sacrifice meet us everywhere. Well may the heavenly host look with amazement upon the human family who refuse to be uplifted and enriched with the boundless love expressed in Christ. Well may they exclaim, Why this great waste?
     But the atonement for a lost world was to be full, abundant, and complete. Christ's offering was exceedingly abundant to reach every soul that God had created. It could not be restricted so as not to exceed the number who would accept the great Gift. All men are not saved; yet the plan of redemption is not a waste because it does not accomplish all that its liberality has provided for. There must be enough and to spare.
     Simon the host had been influenced by the criticism of Judas upon Mary's gift, and he was surprised at the conduct of Jesus. His Pharisaic pride was offended. He knew that many of his guests were looking upon Christ with distrust and displeasure. Simon said in his heart, "This Man, if He were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth Him: for she is a sinner."
     By curing Simon of leprosy, Christ had saved him from a living death. But now Simon questioned whether the Saviour were a prophet. Because Christ allowed this woman to approach Him, because He did not indignantly spurn her as one whose sins were too great to be forgiven, because He did not show that He realized she had fallen, Simon was tempted to think that He was not a prophet. Jesus knows nothing of this woman who is so free in her demonstrations, he thought, or He would not allow her to touch Him.
     But it was Simon's ignorance of God and of Christ that led him to think as he did. He did not realize that God's Son must act in God's way, with compassion, tenderness, and mercy. Simon's way was to take no notice of Mary's penitent service. Her act of kissing Christ's feet and anointing them with ointment was exasperating to his hardheartedness. He thought that if Christ were a prophet, He would recognize sinners and rebuke them.
     To this unspoken thought the Saviour answered: "Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. . . . There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell Me therefore, which of them will love him most? Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And He said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged."
     As did Nathan with David, Christ concealed His home thrust under the veil of a parable. He threw upon His host the burden of pronouncing sentence upon himself. Simon had led into sin the woman he now despised. She had been deeply wronged by him. By the two debtors of the parable, Simon and the woman were represented. Jesus did not design to teach that different degrees of obligation should be felt by the two persons, for each owed a debt of gratitude that never could be repaid. But Simon felt himself more righteous than Mary, and Jesus desired him to see how great his guilt really was. He would show him that his sin was greater than hers, as much greater as a debt of five hundred pence exceeds a debt of fifty pence.
     Simon now began to see himself in a new light. He saw how Mary was regarded by One who was more than a prophet. He saw that with keen prophetic eye Christ read her heart of love and devotion. Shame seized upon him, and he realized that he was in the presence of One superior to himself.
     "I entered into thine house," Christ continued, "thou gavest Me no water for My feet;" but with tears of repentance, prompted by love, Mary hath washed My feet, and wiped them with the hair of her head. "Thou gavest Me no kiss: but this woman," whom you despise, "since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss My feet." Christ recounted the opportunities Simon had had to show his love for his Lord, and his appreciation of what had been done for him. Plainly, yet with delicate politeness, the Saviour assured His disciples that His heart is grieved when His children neglect to show their gratitude to Him by words and deeds of love.
     The Heart Searcher read the motive that led to Mary's action, and He saw also the spirit that prompted Simon's words. "Seest thou this woman?" He said to him. She is a sinner. "I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little."
     Simon's coldness and neglect toward the Saviour showed how little he appreciated the mercy he had received. He had thought he honored Jesus by inviting Him to his house. But he now saw himself as he really was. While he thought himself reading his Guest, his Guest had been reading him. He saw how true Christ's judgment of him was. His religion had been a robe of Pharisaism. He had despised the compassion of Jesus. He had not recognized Him as the representative of God. While Mary was a sinner pardoned, he was a sinner unpardoned. The rigid rule of justice he had desired to enforce against her condemned him.
     Simon was touched by the kindness of Jesus in not openly rebuking him before the guests. He had not been treated as he desired Mary to be treated. He saw that Jesus did not wish to expose his guilt to others, but sought by a true statement of the case to convince his mind, and by pitying kindness to subdue his heart. Stern denunciation would have hardened Simon against repentance, but patient admonition convinced him of his error. He saw the magnitude of the debt which he owed his Lord. His pride was humbled, he repented, and the proud Pharisee became a lowly, self-sacrificing disciple.
     Mary had been looked upon as a great sinner, but Christ knew the circumstances that had shaped her life. He might have extinguished every spark of hope in her soul, but He did not. It was He who had lifted her from despair and ruin. Seven times she had heard His rebuke of the demons that controlled her heart and mind. She had heard His strong cries to the Father in her behalf. She knew how offensive is sin to His unsullied purity, and in His strength she had overcome.
     When to human eyes her case appeared hopeless, Christ saw in Mary capabilities for good. He saw the better traits of her character. The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized. Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature. The one who had fallen, and whose mind had been a habitation of demons, was brought very near to the Saviour in fellowship and ministry. It was Mary who sat at His feet and learned of Him. It was Mary who poured upon His head the precious anointing oil, and bathed His feet with her tears. Mary stood beside the cross, and followed Him to the sepulcher. Mary was first at the tomb after His resurrection. It was Mary who first proclaimed a risen Saviour.
     Jesus knows the circumstances of every soul. You may say, I am sinful, very sinful. You may be; but the worse you are, the more you need Jesus. He turns no weeping, contrite one away. He does not tell to any all that He might reveal, but He bids every trembling soul take courage. Freely will He pardon all who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration.
     Christ might commission the angels of heaven to pour out the vials of His wrath on our world, to destroy those who are filled with hatred of God. He might wipe this dark spot from His universe. But He does not do this. He is today standing at the altar of incense, presenting before God the prayers of those who desire His help.
     The souls that turn to Him for refuge, Jesus lifts above the accusing and the strife of tongues. No man or evil angel can impeach these souls. Christ unites them to His own divine-human nature. They stand beside the great Sin Bearer, in the light proceeding from the throne of God. "Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us." Romans 8:33, 34.

Such a lovely character our Lord has! To freely pardon anyone who will come to Him for pardon and then lift them up! Amen!

     The Saviour had reached Bethany only six days before the Passover, and according to His custom had sought rest at the home of Lazarus.

With 25 chapters left in the book, we are already six days from the last Passover in which Christ is killed. Much of importance happens in these last two weeks.

Can we know Simon has not been converted. There is a radical change when one accepts Jesus as ruler in the life. Simon has not experienced this transformation from sinner to saint.

Yes, Richard!! We CAN know when a soul is truly converted--there are two key interconnected elements to true conversion, and we will get to this profound principle of the foundation of the gospel in Chapter 73, "Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled." It states on page 676, paragraph 4:

"When we live by faith on the Son of God, the fruits of the Spirit will be seen in our lives; not one will be missing."

We see two keys in light of Simon--first, he DID NOT live by faith on the Son of God; his interactions with Jesus had yet to kindle full faith in Christ as Messiah, and evidence of th doubt he cherished is seen in how he watched the way Christ treated Mary--and actually judged Christ in his heart as not being the Messiah, simply because Christ acted mercifully!

Secondly, Simon did not have Christ in His heart, so the fruits of the Spirit WERE NOT in his life without one missing.

But praise the Lord--there was hope for him!! He repented and turned entirely to Jesus--and received a new heart!!

Simon was touched by the kindness of Jesus in not openly rebuking him before the guests. He had not been treated as he desired Mary to be treated. He saw that Jesus did not wish to expose his guilt to others, but sought by a true statement of the case to convince his mind, and by pitying kindness to subdue his heart. Stern denunciation would have hardened Simon against repentance, but patient admonition convinced him of his error. He saw the magnitude of the debt which he owed his Lord. His pride was humbled, he repented, and the proud Pharisee became a lowly, self-sacrificing disciple. – {DA 567.5}

Kindness, one of the fruits of the Spirit, was the manifestation of divinity in Christ that reached his heart. See how Romans and Titus connect this for us:

"Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?" (Romans 2:4)

"But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life" (Titus 3:4-7).

And we see another soul who was truly cares netted in this beautiful narrative:

 "Mary knew not the full significance of her deed of love. She could not answer her accusers. She could not explain why she had chosen that occasion for anointing Jesus. The Holy Spirit had planned for her, and she had obeyed His promptings. Inspiration stoops to give no reason. An unseen presence, it speaks to mind and soul, and moves the heart to action. It is its own justification." {DA 560.4}

So those who are truly converted can be used by God in the most powerful ways--by responding the heart work of beholding the loveliness of Christ in contrast to one's own sinfulness and helplessness. Mary responded to the gospel of God's grace, and her life, like a portrait of God's love in her life bearing fruit, is for this reason a memorial. The greatest memorial ever revealed is seen in her life, and is to reproduced in God's people before Jesus returns, for they are to be like Him!!!

Amen, Pastor Sean!!  What we see in Mary is to be seen in you and me. When we love Jesus with the whole heart, then His character is reproduced in us, all of the fruits of His Spirit are in us, for He, through the Holy Spirit, has possession of the heart!

This is not restricted to Seventh-day Adventists. All who are truly in a converted state are born of His Spirit, so they manifest the fruits of His Spirit, all of them, not one is missing. This is what Jesus longs to see in His church. This is His reward for all of His suffering and death. We deny Him that reward when we sin, whether we mean to or not. When we sin, it is because we are separated from Him, and thus without His Spirit, we have no power to resist the smallest temptation.

Jesus sees in us, when we are separated from Him, what we can become, just as He saw in Mary what she would become when united with Him.

     When to human eyes her case appeared hopeless, Christ saw in Mary capabilities for good. He saw the better traits of her character. The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized. Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature. The word "character" does not appear in Scripture, but it is a very good word to help us understand in our language the difference between a saint and an unrepentant sinner. It is most important, for Satan has brought into professing Christian churches a great deception that keeps most from understanding what happens at conversion. Here are a couple of thoughts on character.

    Any one act, either good or evil, does not form the character; but thoughts and feelings indulged prepare the way for acts and deeds of the same kind.
    It is . . . by a repetition of acts that habits are established and character confirmed.....
    The character is formed, to a great extent, in early years. The habits then established have more influence than any natural endowment, in making men either giants or dwarfs in intellect; for the very best talents may, through wrong habits, become warped and enfeebled. The earlier in life one contracts hurtful habits, the more firmly will they hold their victim in slavery, and the more certainly will they lower his standard of spirituality. On the other hand, if correct and virtuous habits are formed in youth, they will generally mark the course of the possessor through life. In most cases, it will be found that those who in later life reverence God and honor the right learned that lesson before there was time for the world to stamp its images of sin upon the soul. Those of mature age are generally as insensible to new impressions as is the hardened rock, but youth is impressible.  CG 199.

Character if formed by repeated thoughts and feelings which produce habits of acts. We are either moving in one direction or the other. Children form character prior to being converted. They may form a "good" character, but that does not mean they are converted. One may do "good" deeds that are done from a selfish heart. At conversion the heart is purified, then the "good" deeds are done from a right motive. It is certainly easier to be converted if one has formed a character of not lying, cheating, or stealing....or getting easily irritated.

Also notice the occasional evil deed is not talking about salvation, but character. The quote is often misused to allow for salvation when one is disconnected from Christ and sins a known sin.

Today's reading opens with a powerful statement regarding character, the character of one who is not converted.

How can we know if we are not converted? Has the moral character been transformed? Has the heart been cleansed? While it is more of a battle for the older folks to be converted if they have not formed good characters, Christ can and does bring old folks into His kingdom. Many have formed "good" characters prior to knowing God. He has been working in their lives to reveal Himself. We see in these truths a very important truth. What we do each day is so very important in the character we are forming. Such an important truth. When in Christ, we are preparing for heaven.....and the trials that await us in this world. This is one reason why we can "glory in tribulations."    :)

Amen, Richard! We can be thankful for the blessing of building character, but we need to realize that a sustained conversion is only possible through an entire, continuous surrender to Christ. When Christ abides within the heart, He fills us with all of the fruits of His Spirit so that not one is missing.

I love how in this chapter we see the experience of Mary who was fully converted and revealed such an experience in the outflow of the divine love of Christ flowing through her soul:

   When to human eyes her case appeared hopeless, Christ saw in Mary capabilities for good. He saw the better traits of her character. The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized. Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature. The one who had fallen, and whose mind had been a habitation of demons, was brought very near to the Saviour in fellowship and ministry. It was Mary who sat at His feet and learned of Him. It was Mary who poured upon His head the precious anointing oil, and bathed His feet with her tears. Mary stood beside the cross, and followed Him to the sepulcher. Mary was first at the tomb after His resurrection. It was Mary who first proclaimed a risen Saviour. {DA 568.2}

We can praise God that the new birth is a divine reality, and that we can experience the grace of God (totally unmerited favor) towards us in such a way that our hearts are transformed, our minds are renewed. Praise God for the gift of His marvelous grace!

What a stunning chapter! I love how Jesus is revealed in the life and character of Mary--a pardoned, transformed sinner who has become a saint, a holy partaker of the divine nature!

May we today let our day be filled with "Mary Moments" and find ways to bring joy to our Savior's heart by always staying connected to Christ, and doing the "good work" He has for us--a work that can only be good because God, the Holy Spirit, is actuating our every thought, motive, and action! Praise the Lord that this is possible for us in Jesus!!

Amen Pastor Sean!  in the past I could never understand how we could "bless" Christ but now I understand that we can bless Him by our love for Him  and doing "good works" not out of a sense of duty or obligation but out of a heart of love. Oh how Jesus loves us!! When we fully understand this we will gladly "repay" Him without any thought of what it costs us.

I was also touched by this part...

When reading the chapter it's easy to see how wrong Simon is but yet Christ treats Simon much the same way that He treated Mary. With love, kindness and mercy. Through patience the Simon's heart was broken. This is a lesson for us in how we treat the seemingly rough and unlikely person to respond. Our God is a God of mercy and long suffering towards us.

Amen and amen!!  Jesus longs to receive our gifts of love today! He loves to see us surrender our sin polluted hearts to Him that He might cleanse us whiter than snow, even though our sins be as scarlet. Such grace! Such love! He did not come to condemn us, we are already condemned by our sins. He came to heal us, no matter who teaches otherwise. We see in this chapter the power of grace to transform the life. God loved us while we were yet sinners!!

What patience our Savior has. I'll be honest and say if I knew someone who was doing wrongs things and always making poor enough choices that they had on multiple occasions become demon possessed I might be tempted to give up working with them by the 3rd time much less 7 times.

However, I'm not totally blind and I know that I've also been on the receiving end of Christ's patience waiting for me to to see and understand my need of Him and how lovely He truly is. We have a great and loving Savior!!

Amen, Jim!! What a lovely Savior we have! Jesus sees the value of each soul, and when we are filled with His love, we also will see the infinite worth of souls and appreciate what Jesus is doing in their lives, even as Christ has pardoned us greatly and has given us a new life in Him! I am so thankful for the connection with Christ that we can enjoy today by making a full-heart surrender to Him! Mary clearly revealed all of the fruits of the Spirit in her life (the evidence that she was living by faith), for her deed was "good"--meaning it had been wrought by the One who alone is good--the Holy Spirit, who is God at work in humanity!! Praise the Lord!!

Let us behold Jesus daily in this blessed "thoughtful hour" that His love at work in us will OVERFLOW to bless everyone! Even though it seems that few accept, let us not become discouraged--Jesus rejoiced to see even one come to such an appreciative expression of faith before He died, and we also can bring joy to Jesus heart by expressing our love to Him today in words and deeds that are fed by heavenly streams of love by the effectual working of the Holy Spirit!

Amen!  And, while the love of God was constraining some, the hatred of God by Satan and his followers was working to pervert the truth. The high priest would claim that "it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not." John 11:50.

Such a lie! They were not planning that one should die, but that another must die also.

So it is with sin, one lie is never enough. Those in bondage to sin, the unconverted, have no power to do any good thing. The whole life is in service of Satan and sin, even if we want to serve God. We cannot serve two masters at the same time.

Praise God that He gave us His Son that we might be transformed in character through a new birth, conversion. We notice in this reading today that Simon was not converted at this time. He character had not been transformed.

Many today have believed a lie that it is not necessary to have a transformed character to have salvation. They have been taught that the character will be transformed when Jesus comes. Such a deception! Jesus longs to give a new heart today. Then we shall have love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance in our lives! We do not have to wait at all!! We just need to give the whole heart to Jesus!

How sad that the world blames God for much of the disasters that happen calling them "Acts of God". Most of the time it is satan who is trying to make a wreck of this world the lives of those are living in it. Satan is the one who enjoys misery, destruction, and death not our Heavenly Savior. Christ today is willing to save any and to the uttermost who come unto Him and he presents their prayers for help to the Father.

Amen, Jim! God is merciful, and He is calling all to repentance if they will be drawn. Satan is studying the laboratories of nature that he may seek how to draw as many into death unprepared and unrepentant. At the same time, while God is merciful, there is a real sense in which calamities fall upon the wicked who have overstepped the limits of divine mercy. Two previous biblical examples are the Flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. While we know God is delighting in mercy and we need to magnify His infinite love, we must also remember that God's justice has not been set aside, and that those who reject the immeasurable gift in Christ will face destruction. But it is our deep prayer that we may reach these souls before it is too late. What a privilege to see the loveliness of Jesus in this chapter as it was manifested in the life and character of Mary who was transformed by the divine nature!

The plan and ground of salvation is love--and Mary experienced that love so fully that it constrained her to action. May we allow Jesus to so fill us today that we will go on His errands to bless others and reflect His character to a world soon to perish.

Amen and amen!   God is so very merciful!  What is it that transforms the sinner into a saint? It is the grace of God! It is the unmerited favor of God for sinners who loved Him not. That love when allowed into the heart converts the sinner. It is this unmerited love that constrains the beholder  to love God supremely. Mary knew Jesus. "It was the love of Christ that constrained her." Constrain is the perfect word we are to understand. Sadly, this great demonstration of love, the great price paid for the salvation of the whole world is wasted on many. Yet, the price was paid for every single person who has been born on this earth.

     The atonement for a lost world was to be full, abundant, and complete.

While the gift was offered to all, notice not all were saved. The Gift must be accepted in order to be justified in having eternal life. All are given temporal life, a period of probation to accept the Gift. But, none are justified until they are born again of the Spirit of God. This we may have today, and every day.

We too, may bless Jesus by receiving His love and then returning it to Him today.

Before we can love Jesus as did Mary, we must know of His love for us, for it is the love of Jesus that "constrains" us to return that love. By beholding His glory we shall be changed into His image (character) each day as we study His life. It was by beholding Jesus that Mary was transformed in character. Christ saw in Mary capabilities for good. He saw the better traits of her character. The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized. Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature.

Amen, Richard! Truly, the gospel reveals the power of how by beholding the loveliness of Jesus we will be changed into His glory!!

I love how Christ looked into the future and could speak with such certainty about the triumph of the gospel. Do we speak with certainty? Do we know for sure that the false gospels that assure people they have eternal life while committing known sin will not triumph? Do we know that the false gospels that blow like many winds will not be able to sway those who are studying FOR THEMSELVES the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy? YES!!! We need to speak with courage and faith that such a character as was manifest in Mary--true repentance revealed in all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing because she had saving faith in the Son of God (full heart surrender whereby Christ gave her a new heart), and how she made room for the Holy Spirit to prompt her to action--will be again manifest in God's remnant church in greater degree as the times call for a deeper repentance and a more decided stand for the right. Praise God--let us pray and know that we may have an abiding experience so Christ can perform that greatest of all miracles in us--a continual communion, a continual conversion, whereby He is working in and through us as we cooperate with Him!

 "'Verily I say unto you,' Christ declared, 'Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.' Looking into the future, the Saviour spoke with certainty concerning His gospel. It was to be preached throughout the world. And as far as the gospel extended, Mary's gift would shed its fragrance, and hearts would be blessed through her unstudied act. Kingdoms would rise and fall; the names of monarchs and conquerors would be forgotten; but this woman's deed would be immortalized upon the pages of sacred history. Until time should be no more, that broken alabaster box would tell the story of the abundant love of God for a fallen race.'  {The Desire of Ages, page 563, paragraph 1}

"Simon's coldness and neglect toward the Saviour showed how little he appreciated the mercy he had received. The rigid rule of justice he had desired to enforce against her condemned him."

But the story doesn't end there and this is the part I love.....

"Simon was touched by the kindness of Jesus in not openly rebuking him before the guests. His pride was humbled, he repented, and the proud Pharisee became a lowly, self-sacrificing disciple."

God's love is truly powerful. And if we are daily abiding in Him He will show that same love through us in our interactions with others in the home, workplace, community, church, etc.

Today many will reflect with Thanksgiving for all they have. We have infinitely more reason to thank God for all He has given us because He gave us Jesus!!

Jesus loves us and He gave all heaven to save us. He came and lived a life in humanity to redeem us. Never will we be called to make a REAL sacrifice in light of what He has already done for us. All that He calls upon us to do is out of His selfless love for us and others--that our highest good may be realized by coming into sweet sympathy with Jesus.

"The same want is evident in our world today. But few appreciate all that Christ is to them. If they did, the great love of Mary would be expressed, the anointing would be freely bestowed. The expensive ointment would not be called a waste. Nothing would be thought too costly to give for Christ, no self-denial or self-sacrifice too great to be endured for His sake." {The Desire of Ages, page 565, paragraph 3}

I love how chapter 62 in The Desire of Ages synchronizes the accounts from Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John about what happened at Simon's feast as Mary anointed Jesus. I love what Jesus has done to pardon, and how her heart was filled with gratitude. May all we say and do be an outflow of His love working through us as we behold His loveliness of character. All the fruits of the Spirit, without one missing, will be wrought in our experience as long as we abide in Jesus by faith. Let His love constrain you today! Have some "Mary Magdalene moments" in finding ways that the Holy Spirit prompts you to extend Christ's healing love to others and to show Him how much you appreciate He has done for you!

Amen, Pastor Sean. If we could see a more accurate of who we really are, we would love Jesus more. Why? Because those who have been forgiven much, love much. I saw something so very sad this morning, I had not really noticed before, not the degree I did this morning. The disciples had opportunity to bless Jesus, when they did not. Remember how Jesus longed for human sympathy when in the Garden sweating blood? How very sad! There was another time when the disciples had opportunity, actually there were many, but this time was when Simon and Judas hurt Jesus by hurting Mary. But, when we acknowledge His love for us, we cause His heart to be merry. What was the result of Mary's act of love when she poured out the perfume? At the time of greatest darkness for our Lord, it encouraged Him. Such a thought, that we might encourage our Lord!!

He walked alone when put upon by wicked men. But, there were opportunities to bless Him, and Mary did greatly. May we also return a bit of the love He has for us.

"as He went down into the darkness of His great trial, He carried with Him the memory of that deed." We do not half understand the results of the actions in our lives, both for good and bad.

We have opportunity today to bless Jesus. The last message of warning is going forth today. It is the righteousness of Christ. As we lift up Jesus, we can bless Jesus in the same manner as did Mary when she poured out the ointment that the Holy Spirit moved her to do. The grace of Christ will be seen as to be the power of the Holy Spirit in transforming lives.

     The fragrant gift which Mary had thought to lavish upon the dead body of the Saviour she poured upon His living form. We have opportunity to pour out our love for our Savior.

Since reading today's chapter my love for my Saviour has deepened.  We see in each person's situation a revelation of God's love. All glory belongs to Him.

I see in Mary a simple, innocent, childlike faith in Jesus that He needs from each one of us. Like Mary I want to be found where ever Jesus is.

Amen, Richard and Dorine! What a privilege we have to behold the loveliness of Jesus and to be able to experience the transformation of character that God's grace wrought in Mary's soul.

"Christ delighted in the earnest desire of Mary to do the will of her Lord. He accepted the wealth of pure affection which His disciples did not, would not, understand. This is why beholding Jesus is so powerful--it will fill our souls and we will overflow with His love toward a world lying in sin and sorrow. Let us remember how much Jesus means to us, let us spend daily this "thoughtful hour" upon His life and the closing scenes of His experience, and we will be made His witnesses!

How dull and short sighted our minds can be sometimes. I will not pretend to be or say that I'm better than the disciples because I know fully well the long road it has been for Christ to get them this far so I just can't help but wonder if our prayers should include a request to have our eyes, ears, and mind open a little more each day to the true greatness of our Savior. Which is one of the reasons why I enjoy coming to this particular message area.

Amen, Jim! We have so much more to grasp, appreciate, and comprehend of our Savior's love! What a blessing it is to behold Jesus' loveliness manifest in saving sinners and transforming them into saints, as He did with Mary!

Freely will He pardon all who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration." {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 3}

Mary was drawn by Christ's love, and her whole soul was transformed. I praise God that "the worse you are, the more you need Jesus." That is where any true strength in the Christian life comes from--realizing our incredible sinfulness and need, we cast ourselves at the feet of Jesus, daily spend this "thoughtful hour" beholding His loveliness, and we are being changed by being made partakers of the divine nature! What a promise! What a blessed experience of character that enables us to go forth to bless others with a living testimony of His matchless grace!! Hallelujah!

The thought that comes to my mind as I read this incredible chapter of God's love and mercy is that it's not 'what' we do and say but 'why' we do and say them that is most important.  (I'm not suggesting that what we do and say are not important but we may judge someone unfairly because we do not know the motives of their heart. As a result we could discourage them and chase them from the very source of help they need.)That's why we are told that man looks upon the outward appearance but God looks upon the heart.

Our reading points this fact out in the lives of Judas, Mary, Simon, and the disciples. Yes Mary's sins were great but God's grace was greater and because of it Mary loved Jesus with a heart that knew no limits. She was by His side to the bitter end. I want that kind of love for my Saviour in all circumstances I find myself in.

Give me a new heart today Lord that I may worship you and live for you in spirit and in truth. Amen.

Amen, Sister Doreen. Jesus looks upon the heart. He sees the motive of why we do what we do.

Many fail to understand why Jesus dealt with Judas as He did. Yes, He loved Judas, and yes, He bore with him patiently in an effort to save him. But, there is more as to why Jesus did not send him away or did not reprove him openly. We ought to give heed to His wisdom in our dealing with those who are in rebellion.

 And though charged with being a thief, Judas would have gained sympathy, even among the disciples. The Saviour reproached him not, and thus avoided giving him an excuse for his treachery.

My heart is afresh encouraged by the loveliness of Jesus and how much He cares about me and each of us who are very sinful, and who are very dear to His heart. He came not to condemn, but to save. The more sinful and weak we realize ourselves to be, the more we need Jesus. May our hearts overflow with love for Christ because of His love for us, even as Mary's whole life was transformed by the infinite love of God in Christ.

"Jesus knows the circumstances of every soul. You may say, I am sinful, very sinful. You may be; but the worse you are, the more you need Jesus. He turns no weeping, contrite one away. He does not tell to any all that He might reveal, but He bids every trembling soul take courage. Freely will He pardon all who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration." {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 3}

I need Jesus very much. But He will give me and each of us courage to overcome our sins, motivated in each moment by His love. His perfect love casts out fear!

Amen Pastor Sean! The power of God's love, grace, is so very powerful! If we would but behold it each day we would become like Him in character. I especially liked the truth we read in today's chapter, that we may be partakers of God's divine nature. That does not mean we become God, but that in connecting ourselves fully with Christ, we are empowered to do good. We being filled with the Holy Spirit, are filled with His character of love joy and peace! What an opportunity! I also was impressed with the truth that like Mary, we may be a great blessing to others as she was a blessing to Jesus while He lived. Nicodemus and Joseph of did not come forth while He lived. When He hung up on the cross they then came forward and gave much in order that He would be buried properly. We too may today be a blessing to others while they live.

I am encouraged by reading this chapter this morning: God wants to help even those who have been struggling with falling back into their sins, like Mary did. Praise the Lord that she finally got the victory. We must not give up on others whose good intentions seem to be ropes of sand. Praise the Lord that Simon also overcame his judgmental character and became a true, humble disciple of Christ. Seeing him, we might have been tempted to give up hope that he would ever rise above his self-righteousness and have a true conversion. Lastly, there is something we can all do for Jesus: We can give Him the love of His redeemed ones of which Mary's act was a foretaste. We can show Him love and appreciation today.

I am so thankful to read your encouraging post this morning, fellow believer! Yes, conversion is possible for ALL who look unto Jesus and yield the whole heart to Him, as we see in Mary and Simon's case! I am so thankful for HOW God looks on us--with great hope and infinite possibilities through His redeeming grace that transforms us from sinners into saints!

"When to human eyes her case appeared hopeless, Christ saw in Mary capabilities for good. He saw the better traits of her character. The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized. Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature. The one who had fallen, and whose mind had been a habitation of demons, was brought very near to the Saviour in fellowship and ministry. It was Mary who sat at His feet and learned of Him. It was Mary who poured upon His head the precious anointing oil, and bathed His feet with her tears. Mary stood beside the cross, and followed Him to the sepulcher. Mary was first at the tomb after His resurrection. It was Mary who first proclaimed a risen Saviour." {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 2}

Amen! Plain Adventist! it's good to have you join us. As you pointed not only did Mary find forgiveness but even Simon the one who lead her down the wrong path in the first place. All who come to Christ can find peace as He can and will save even unto the uttermost.

This reminds me of Aaron in the beginning of the wandering of the Hebrews in the desert. He as a leader looked away from Christ when he made that golden calf so even our leaders who today who seem to bent on the wrong path can turn around and be used of God.

I had the same thoughts PA as I read this chapter and I was about to post the very paragraph that Jim just posted. Jesus gave us an example of how to treat those who are struggling with sin. He does all He can to protect their reputation when they least deserve it. I love the last paragraph....

"The souls that turn to Him for refuge, Jesus lifts above the accusing and the strife of tongues. No man or evil angel can impeach these souls. Christ unites them to His own divine-human nature. They stand beside the great Sin Bearer, in the light proceeding from the throne of God. "Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth,. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us." Rom. 8:33, 34

Lastly, there is something we can all do for Jesus: We can give Him the love of His redeemed ones of which Mary's act was a foretaste. We can show Him love and appreciation today.

Amen Sister Amy! I was impressed with the very same thought. Mary did that which blessed Jesus greatly. What can we do for him today? By beholding His love for us, we are drawn to Him. As we feed upon Jesus our love deepens for Him. We see how very needy we are in order to do any good thing. We are no different from Simon if we do not surrender our carnal hearts daily.

When we have been filled with His grace then we shall want to bless Him as did Mary. What can we do? We can bless others as Jesus blesses us. We can testify to what He has done for us. We can praise His name. We can talk about Him today.

It would be well if we remember this, and take time to express our love before it is too late....even to those who despitefully use us. But, how much more we ought to express our love for Jesus and our heavenly Father, and the Holy Spirit.

There are times when I feel so very sad as I read of the pain inflicted upon Christ, especially when we see it was within the power of those who love Him to relieve His suffering. One of those times appears in today's reading. "The loneliness of Christ, separated from the heavenly courts, living the life of humanity, was never understood or appreciated by the disciples as it should have been. He was often grieved because His disciples did not give Him that which He should have received from them." Do we understand how much Jesus suffered here on this Earth, out of love for us?

As we study the life and Words of Christ, we are constrained to do all we can to bless Him. We love Him because He first loved us.

He is worthy of all the love we can give Him! Praise His holy name!

How we see people has so much to do with how we can really help them. If we see the way a person acts or struggles and immediately make a judgment in our minds that they are "hopeless" and "not likely to be saved," then we may tend to treat them that way, and actually confirm the accusation of Satan against them (which is totally false!). Jesus has modeled to us, in how He treated Mary Magdalene, the way to help a person who really struggles with sin, mental illness (in her case, demon possession), or any other greatly difficult sinful struggle. Jesus was very patient, but a key in the whole experience was how Jesus inspired her with hope! In Christ's manner of interaction with Mary, it was clear to her that He understood her circumstances, so He was not ready to accuse, but to lift up from despair, depression, and ruin that often comes upon a person when they see and feel so broken and helpless.

I think of how floods of redeeming love surged over and through my soul when I was so utterly broken mentally after my last (and final) fall into a manic phase of bipolar in 2010 (I nearly froze to death in an attempted and not-well-planned move to Nevada, was re-hospitalized and medicated, and in utter brokenness). Realizing the mediations I was on a few weeks after the incident were really causing incredibly horrible side effects, I went off the medication, and at a time when it seemed that the last bit of my sanity was about to leave me, I listened to the incredible words of the hymn "My Song Is Love Unknown," and contemplated that Jesus left heaven to take frail flesh and die to save me--yes, me personally--and tears flowed from my eyes as I was kneeling and melting under the revelation of Jesus' loveliness. The powerful combination of seeing my utter brokenness and sinfulness in the simultaneous experiential realization of Jesus' infinite love was a turning point for me in that end of 2010. "My Song Is Love Unknown" became my favorite hymn, I prayerfully started in 2011 to read the Bible through that year, and started to really apply the principles of NEWSTART (Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunshine, Temperance, Air, Rest, and Trust in God's Divine Power). By early 2011, I was restored by Jesus fully from bipolar, never again to go under its manic and depressive control, no longer to need or use drug medication, but was enabled through divine grace to overcome--because of the power of the love of Christ that gave me hope! I share this testimony that all who are suffering in whatever way may turn everything over to Christ, and find healing and hope in Him!

May we surrender fully to Christ this day, that He may, through us, manifest this love--this hopeful, understanding, and patient way of reaching hearts as the Holy Spirit lifts up soul after soul through the beautiful and effective method of Christ!

"Mary had been looked upon as a great sinner, but Christ knew the circumstances that had shaped her life. He might have extinguished every spark of hope in her soul, but He did not. It was He who had lifted her from despair and ruin. Seven times she had heard His rebuke of the demons that controlled her heart and mind. She had heard His strong cries to the Father in her behalf. She knew how offensive is sin to His unsullied purity, and in His strength she had overcome." {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 1}

For those of you who may not know the hymn I referenced, may the medication on these beautiful words (and you can sing it, too!) bring you a deeper intimacy with Jesus as you appreciate and experience His love!

My song is love unknown,
  My Savior’s love to me;
Love to the loveless shown,
  That they might lovely be.
    O who am I,
    That for my sake
    My Lord should take
    Frail flesh, and die?

He came from His blest throne
  Salvation to bestow;
But men made strange, and none
  The longed-for Christ would know:
    But oh, my Friend,
    My Friend indeed,
    Who at my need
    His life did spend.

Sometimes they strew His way,
  And His sweet praises sing;
Resounding all the day
  Hosannas to their King:
    Then “Crucify!”
    Is all their breath,
    And for His death
    They thirst and cry.

Why, what hath my Lord done?
   What makes this rage and spite?
He made the lame to run,
   He gave the blind their sight.
    Sweet injuries!
    Yet they at these
    Themselves displease,
    and 'gainst Him rise.

They rise and needs will have
  My dear Lord made away;
A murderer they save,
  The Prince of life they slay.
    Yet cheerful He
    To suffering goes,
    That He His foes
    From thence might free.

In life, no house, no home
  My Lord on earth might have;
In death, no friendly tomb,
  But what a stranger gave.
    What may I say?
    Heav’n was His home;
    But mine the tomb
    Wherein He lay.

Here might I stay and sing,
  No story so divine;
Never was love, dear King,
  Never was grief like Thine.
    This is my Friend,
    In whose sweet praise
    I all my days
    Could gladly spend.

Amen Pastor Sean. It is this knowledge of God that transforms sinners into saints. Grace is more than a word, it is the power that puts self in the grave. Grace touches the heart And this leads to a whole heart surrender to . This is why those who have been forgiven much, love much. It is when I have a correct revelation of Christ, when I see his loveliness, that I have a true standard by which to measure my own character. This is what causes me to fall on my face in Repentance. As unworthy as I am, Jesus still loves me! Every time my mind beholds the righteousness of Christ and the goodness of my heavenly Father, I am brought to repentance.

All who long a for Christian experience may have it. It is the goodness of God that leadeth thee to repentance. As we behold Jesus uplifted on the cross we will see His goodness. It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour a day contemplating the life of Christ, especially the closing scenes. By beholding His glory we are transformed into His image. Sadly, so few appreciate what Christ means to them because they do not really know Him personally.

But He does not do this. He is today standing at the altar of incense, presenting before God the prayers of those who desire His help."

Lord, help me today to be willing to have more love and insight, more empathy to those whose are struggling with a sinful nature.

"The souls that turn to Him for refuge, Jesus lifts above the accusing and the strife of tongues. No man or evil angel can impeach these souls. Christ unites them to His own divine-human nature. When David realized his weak sinful nature he prayed this prayer and I pray that we all may do the same, recognizing "our own need."
Psalm 51:9-11 King James Version (KJV) 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

1 John 1:9 says... "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" This is why Jesus came to Earth - He paid the price for our sin at Calvary so that He might offer us eternal life. Some people get excited about winning the lottery but what Jesus is offering us IS SO MUCH BETTER!! It is for ALL Eternity and He promises us that SIN will never again rise up to spoil His Universe.  In Matthew we read these words....Matthew 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? This world is soon to pass away...If you haven't taken Jesus up on this awesome offer, I beg you to reconsider.

They stand beside the great Sin Bearer, in the light proceeding from the throne of God." Amen Brother Beacon!  If Christ be for us, who can be against us!!

There is an important lesson for us in the sacrifice Mary made to bless Jesus.

"As He went down into the darkness of His great trial, He carried with Him the memory of that deed, an earnest of the love that would be His from His redeemed ones forever.

This brings back to memory when Jesus longed for sympathy in the Garden when His Father withdrew His beams of light and love. He got none. How very sad! But, what Mary had done was not forgotten. We may make Jesus happy today.

Amen, Brother Beacon! And Amen, Brother Richard!

When Jesus has the whole heart, even the motives upon which we will respond to His grace are pure and and unselfish. Mary's act revealed her truly converted experience, and why she was "all in" with showing how much she appreciated His forgiveness. If we are "forgiven little" in the sense that we have not let Jesus cleanse the WHOLE HEART from sin, then there is still seen the coldness and indifference of Simon (who thankfully was led to repentance fully by the way Jesus so kindly treated him). May we remember that in all of God's dealings, He is after our hearts. Unless the whole heart is yielded to Him, we will consider it a "waste" to serve God (because we are reasoning from selfish motives). Only those who let God do the miracle of transforming them by taking the "risk" of fully surrendering to Christ will ever know the joy and love and peace (and all the others fruits of the Spirit) that come when the fallen nature is crucified, and we are abiding in Him. (It is not a real risk to surrender fully to God--it just feels like it to a naturally selfish being that wants to be in control. But when we keep our eyes on Calvary, we find that the great "risk" was already taken, and the best thing we can possibly do is simply surrender all and continue to let Jesus do a work of transformation in our lives moment by moment.) Then, fully surrendered to Christ no matter what the cost, we can be happy, peaceful and obedient because Christ is all in all!

"The Heart Searcher read the motive that led to Mary's action, and He saw also the spirit that prompted Simon's words. 'Seest thou this woman?' He said to him. She is a sinner. 'I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.'" {The Desire of Ages, page 567, paragraph 3}

As we see the greatness of the sins that we have committed against God in leading to Jesus' death for us, let us ever remember that God is love, and that that love will melt our hearts as we behold it. Only by love is love awakened.

If we are ever tempted to pass judgment upon others may this statement loom before us to remind us of who we really are.

"While Mary was a sinner pardoned, he (Simon) was a sinner unpardoned. The rigid rule of justice he had desired to enforce against her condemned him."

Then Jesus touches Simon's heart like nothing else could.

What an example of compassion and love that Jesus wants to plant within the heart of each professed child of God.

"Mary knew not the full significance of her deed of love. It is its own justification."

The Holy Spirit is constantly speaking to our hearts and only when we give ourselves like Mary did can He work out His plans for our lives. I am filled with shame to think of the times that I have hushed His voice because I did not want to be embarrassed or rejected. What a lesson Mary has for us. Perfect love casteth out all fear.

May we take the time each day to gratefully reflect on what Jesus has done for each one of us and recommit our lives to Him each morning.

Thank you Jesus for your tender compassion for sinners. Thank You that no sin is too great for you to forgive when we come to Your throne of grace in full surrender and repentance.

Amen, Sister Dorine!

We may never know until we get to heaven how much depended upon that tender, kind word or that testimony shared in due season. As we respond to the drawing love of Christ and let Him transform us to be His witnesses, let not your heart be troubled, and remember that He sees you with infinite possibilities of hope and healing! Mary was enabled by the grace of God to look away from herself and keep her eyes fixed on Jesus, and in His presence she found her true identity, purpose and value. We are of infinite value to God, for an infinite price was paid for us in the blood shed for us upon Calvary's cross. As we look upon the faces of others today, let us remember how Jesus' loving intercessory prayers and love transformed her from a sinner into a saint! We have the privilege of being able to experience this miracle in our own hearts as we yield unreservedly to Jesus! That full surrender to His Holy Spirit to abide in us brings all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing, and empowers us to be living witnesses for Him!

"When to human eyes her case appeared hopeless, Christ saw in Mary capabilities for good. He saw the better traits of her character. The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized. Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature. The one who had fallen, and whose mind had been a habitation of demons, was brought very near to the Saviour in fellowship and ministry. It was Mary who sat at His feet and learned of Him. It was Mary who poured upon His head the precious anointing oil, and bathed His feet with her tears. Mary stood beside the cross, and followed Him to the sepulcher. Mary was first at the tomb after His resurrection. It was Mary who first proclaimed a risen Saviour." {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 2}

God intended that each of us would reflect His loveliness of character, and it is by beholding that we become changed. Let us look away from self to the lovely face of Jesus, so we may be renewed in mind and character as witnesses of healing grace both now and for all of eternity!

Simon was touched by the kindness of Jesus in not openly rebuking him before the guests. He had not been treated as he desired Mary to be treated. [/b][/u]He saw that Jesus did not wish to expose his guilt to others, but sought by a true statement of the case to convince his mind, and by pitying kindness to subdue his heart. Stern denunciation would have hardened Simon against repentance, but patient admonition convinced him of his error. He saw the magnitude of the debt which he owed his Lord. His pride was humbled, he repented, and the proud Pharisee became a lowly, self-sacrificing disciple.

Jesus says to each of us....if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all generously and without reproach; and it will be given to him. James 1:5

"The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized. Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature.  Jesus knows the circumstances of every soul. You may say, I am sinful, very sinful. You may be; but the worse you are, the more you need Jesus. He turns no weeping, contrite one away. He does not tell to any all that He might reveal, but He bids every trembling soul take courage. Freely will He pardon all who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration."

Amen, Brother Beacon!!

I love how Jesus sees us--with love, compassion and infinite possibilities. When we are tempted to look at others ourselves as hopeless, let us remember what Jesus' grace did for Mary and Simon, and how their whole hearts were won to Christ when they realized and experienced the love of God in their hearts. Let us go forth today to diffuse the light of God's love and see people for who they can be in Christ--because we cost Him an infinite price of suffering, and He values us more than we can ask or think!

"When to human eyes her case appeared hopeless, Christ saw in Mary capabilities for good. He saw the better traits of her character. The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized. Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature. What a Savior we have in Jesus! A whole-heart surrender motivated by the love of Christ in light of our sinfulness is the power of the gospel at work to transform sinners into saints who reveal all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing and long to reveal Christ more and more to the world soon to perish, but given more grace that others may learn of Christ before He comes and also be transformed into His lovely image!

.....But the atonement for a lost world was to be full, abundant, and complete.

Isn't it wonderful that Christ's sacrifice on the cross of Calvary covers every human being that has ever lived or will live if they accept Him as their personal Saviour and maintain that connection. Why would we ever refuse such a gift?

Amen Brother Beacon!  He knows all about us. Written in the records of heaven are not only our deeds and words, but our thoughts......and our motives. Yes, Jesus knows our very motives. He looks upon the heart and read them perfectly.

Oh how I love these words. We can't fully comprehend the depth of love that Jesus has for each one. He went to the cross for all who would come to Him. The story of Mary gives us a glimpse into the magnitude of God's love. If He will accept and forgive Mary He will do the same for you and me. The person who has been forgiven the most, loves the most. Imagine being instantly given a clean slate as if you have never sinned. Wow, that is amazing. "Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me." All He asks from us is our hearts and to abide in Him each day. He then works in us to change us. This is a topic I never get bored or tired of contemplating for I am a sinner being saved by grace.

Amen, Brother Beacon, Brother Richard, and Sister Dorine!!

What infinite love we see in Jesus and how He pardoned and restored Mary! I find hope and encouragement that God can save me and ANYONE no matter how sinful if we will but learn to see the way God sees!

"When to human eyes her case appeared hopeless, Christ saw in Mary capabilities for good. He saw the better traits of her character. The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized. Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature. We need to learn, through beholding Jesus' loveliness, to see people the way Jesus sees them. He sees hope where we see moral failure. Jesus sees possibilities where we would be tempted to "give up" on "that one." But as we review how God has dealt with us, let us ever remember that we have been great sinners and that Jesus has treated us like He treated Mary. Jesus saw the better traits of our character and desired to restore us to His image. What joy we may have as we marvel at His amazing grace that transforms sinners such as ourselves into redeemed saints who reveal all of the fruits of His Spirit without one missing, because we have learned that we would rather have Jesus than ANYTHING else!!

Jesus loves you and has a perfect plan for your life. No matter what your past, and no matter what crisis is taking place in our world, you may freely come to Jesus as did Mary and become one of His "Final Moment Miracles"--a portrait of what His grace can do to transform the most sinful, broken and helpless soul into a new creation whose heart and mind are in fully surrendered harmony with the divine nature so that the attributes of heaven--love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance may flow forth through your soul as freely as did the anointing oil that Mary lavished on Jesus. Oh, how Jesus longs to see the revelation of His character in us!! As we come to Him in penitence and humiliation, realizing our continual need of Jesus, He lifts us into His service with a purpose and love that dispels our fears and gives us courage for the final crisis stealing upon our world! Let us look to Jesus, the amazing Savior who has never lost a case entrusted fully to Him!!

"Jesus knows the circumstances of every soul. You may say, I am sinful, very sinful. You may be; but the worse you are, the more you need Jesus. He turns no weeping, contrite one away. He does not tell to any all that He might reveal, but He bids every trembling soul take courage. Freely will He pardon all who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration." {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 3}

Come as you are, for there is no other way to come to Christ. But give Jesus full permission to unite your finite weakness to His divine strength to keep you steadfast by the word of God, the transforming agency applied by the Holy Spirit in renewing us into the image of His purity! Oh, what wondrous love is this that Jesus would leave heaven to save such a worm as you and I! Jesus saves us not because we are are so good, but because He is so good, and He sees what we may become through His grace! Through the merits of Christ's blood each soul is of infinite value in God's sight, and we may so experience oneness with Christ that His light, His character, shines through to reach other hearts with hope in earth's final hour!

"Many there are who bring their precious gifts for the dead. As they stand about the cold, silent form, words of love are freely spoken. Tenderness, appreciation, devotion, all are lavished upon one who sees not nor hears. Had these words been spoken when the weary spirit needed them so much, when the ear could hear and the heart could feel, how precious would have been their fragrance!"

No wonder the heart of Jesus was so touched by Mary's love when she anointed the feet of Jesus. Little did Mary know how encouraging that act was to Jesus as He contemplated the path to Calvary. Mary stood at the cross when most forsook Him and Mary was the first at the tomb on Sunday morning while the disciples were hiding in fear of priests and rulers of the temple. No wonder to her was given the privilege to be the first one seeing Jesus on Sunday Morning and would be the one designated to spread the Good News that Jesus was " ALIVE".

Have we not also been forgiven MUCH?  Let's determine anew today, to boldly show that love and appreciation, by sharing and telling the Good News about our Risen Saviour and His Redeeming Love and Pardoning Grace.

"Simon now began to see himself in a new light. He saw how Mary was regarded by One who was more than a prophet. He saw that with keen prophetic eye Christ read her heart of love and devotion. Shame seized upon him, and he realized that he was in the presence of One superior to himself."

To know Jesus is to love Him. The story of Mary is probably one of most everyone's favorite. If God will forgive Mary He will forgive anyone who comes to Him in the same attitude as Mary. And what a witness she was. We have all sinned yet the mercy and love of Jesus reaches out to each one of us. As we behold Him, His grace transforms us. I read again Pastor Sean's testimony. He knows and understands the love and devotion that Mary had for Jesus because He too experienced the same transforming power that Mary did. Jesus is ready to do the same for anyone who realizes their need of Him and repents.

"Mary had been looked upon as a great sinner, but Christ knew the circumstances that had shaped her life. He might have extinguished every spark of hope in her soul, but He did not. It was He who had lifted her from despair and ruin. Seven times she had heard His rebuke of the demons that controlled her heart and mind. She had heard His strong cries to the Father in her behalf. She knew how offensive is sin to His unsullied purity, and in His strength she had overcome."

Not only did Jesus forgive Mary he forgave her 7 times. No matter where we have been or what we have done there is no sin that Christ will not forgive. He knows our circumstances and motives just as He knew that of Mary, Simon and Judas. Mary and Simon repented when shown their sin but Judas was proud and indignant and hardened his heart towards the Saviour. In the strength of Jesus we too may overcome when we come to Him with a surrendered, humble heart.

Oh the wonderful lessons for us in these pages. May we like Mary think there is nothing too good or valuable to withhold from Jesus. We can never out give the Lord. When our cup of blessings is full and running over we must give to receive more.

We may be lifted above the strife that is so prevalent by letting God's estimate of us be our focus. Mary Magdalene was transformed by grace, and we also may abide in Christ as did she. Let us allow all of the fruits of the Spirit to abide in our hearts by a living faith surrender to Christ!

"The souls that turn to Him for refuge, Jesus lifts above the accusing and the strife of tongues. No man or evil angel can impeach these souls. Christ unites them to His own divine-human nature. Christ desires ALL of us to be in heaven. Let us look upon each soul as of infinite value--as they truly are in Christ!

"Christ delighted in the earnest desire of Mary to do the will of her Lord. He accepted the wealth of pure affection which His disciples did not, would not, understand. It was the outward demonstration of a love fed by heavenly streams until it overflowed."

We too may possess that love for Jesus that Mary so freely gave. It was not for show but was a deep expression from a humble and transformed heart that was filled with gratitude and love for what He had done for her. As we contemplate the cross today may we like Mary express our joy and happiness in Him with hearts filled to overflowing for His love and grace.

Amen! Grace is more than a word, it is the power that converts sinners into saints while living in fallen sinful flesh!

I appreciated the manner in which Jesus dealt with Judas. Notice that He could have rebuked him many times before, but did not. Why not?

 But the look which Jesus cast upon Judas convinced him that the Saviour penetrated his hypocrisy, and read his base, contemptible character. And in commending Mary's action, which had been so severely condemned, Christ had rebuked Judas. Prior to this, the Saviour had never given him a direct rebuke. Now the reproof rankled in his heart. He determined to be revenged. From the supper he went directly to the palace of the high priest, where he found the council assembled, and he offered to betray Jesus into their hands.

Christ might commission the angels of heaven to pour out the vials of His wrath on our world, to destroy those who are filled with hatred of God. He might wipe this dark spot from His universe. But He does not do this. He is today standing at the altar of incense, presenting before God the prayers of those who desire His help.

What a compelling description of the grace of God to dwell upon today as we enjoy the celebrations of His birth with family and friends. Wouldn't it be wonderful if this was our last Christmas on earth!

Amazing, is it not Brother Beacon, that one such manifestation of grace can transform a sinner into a saint. Imagine if we were to pattern our lives after the life of Christ, how successful we would be if we manifested such grace to those who are likewise unkind.

Merry Christmas! TRO family.

Merry Christmas! May Christ be at the center of our day.

Quote

Amen!! But, it will not be our last Christmas because Jesus cannot close the heavenly sanctuary. Why not? Because His people are still sinning and need an Intercessor. He will dung the tree another year. If the church had been reformed years ago, we would have done our work and Jesus would have come. He is waiting upon us to quit sinning. His grace is still needed to convert the church and prepare a people who can go through a time of trouble such as never was without sinning.

Let us take advantage of the opportunities we will be given to love those who despitefully use us today and in the new year. Thus, we will be giving glory to God, the glory He deserves.

Neither do we know the full significance of our deeds of love. God does and it is He who impresses our minds and hearts to do them. It is His grace that is the power that moves us to do good deeds even while living in fallen evil flesh.  When converted and still living in fallen flesh, we are partakers of God's divine nature. Such a miracle!

     When to human eyes her case appeared hopeless, Christ saw in Mary capabilities for good. He saw the better traits of her character. The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized. Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature. Merry Christmas! Let’s look to Jesus and remember He came to save souls as broken as we!

“Jesus knows the circumstances of every soul. You may say, I am sinful, very sinful. You may be; but the worse you are, the more you need Jesus. He turns no weeping, contrite one away. He does not tell to any all that He might reveal, but He bids every trembling soul take courage. Freely will He pardon all who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration.” {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 3}

This is good news! Share this grace in how you live and treat others today by looking upon Jesus, yielding the whole heart to Him, and letting Him imbue you with all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing! Then we can gladly obey the Holy Spirit’s promptings like Mary Magdalene did in how she anointed Jesus in gratitude! Affectionate obedience from a converted heart is the miracle He offers us as the greatest of all gifts! One soul is worth more than worlds!

What great hope and encouragement this story brings to all of us for the Bible says in....Romans 3:23-24 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Acts 22:16 "And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord".[/u]

Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost and that includes " ALL of Us " and whatever our past may be, when we come humbly to Jesus seeking His forgiveness,  He marks a solid line through our recorded sins and gives us a brand new page and marks our sinful record ..."Forgiven". If you need to ask Jesus for forgiveness don't delay--He paid a tremendous price to be able to be our Redeemer. Come today without delay and He will fill your heart with peace,purpose and new found power to live the Christian life and be ready to meet Him when He comes to take His children home to glory.

I was bound by fear but Jesus set me free,

"Christ delighted in the earnest desire of Mary to do the will of her Lord. He accepted the wealth of pure affection which His disciples did not, would not, understand. It was the outward demonstration of a love fed by heavenly streams until it overflowed."

I look forward to meeting Mary and hearing her tell her story. We are only given a glimpse of her life but what a glimpse it is. I pray for that love that Mary had which brought such joy to Jesus' heart.

I was also strongly impressed with the following quote....
"The loneliness of Christ, separated from the heavenly courts, living the life of humanity, was never understood or appreciated by the disciples as it should have been. He was often grieved because His disciples did not give Him that which He should have received from them. He knew that if they were under the influence of the heavenly angels that accompanied Him, they too would think no offering of sufficient value to declare the heart's spiritual affection."

Jesus is with His heavenly family receiving all the adoration and love He deserves but His heart longs for that devotion from each of us.
Heavenly angels are influencing our lives continually. What messages are they winging back to heaven? Where does our devotion lie? May the love of Jesus fill our hearts so completely that we will not consider any sacrifice too costly for our Saviour.

Amen Sister Dorine! How sad that we would deny Him that love which He more than deserves. That grace ought to motivate us to walk with Him continually. And we shall if we will remember continually what He has done.

I saw something this morning I had not seen before.

Evangelicals do not understand the final atonement when Jesus cleansed the heavenly sanctuary.  They think that the atonement made on the cross was enough. It was enough to save every sinner who has ever lived. Communications is difficult at the best of times. Here we see that the atonement at the cross was enough to save all. But, notice how the statement is structured. It did not close off the rest of the work Jesus would do in the sanctuary. "But the atonement for a lost world was to be full, abundant, and complete."  This leaves open that more was to be done for us, as Jesus continues to apply His blood given for us. He will blot out the sins of all who died sanctified and all who will be translated.

His suffering and His death was enough to pay the price for all who have ever lived. Nothing more could be done. But the plan of salvation is more than saving sinners. God is going to put and end to sin for ever. Many have no understanding of this, and many will go to the grave not understanding and will be in heaven. Let us be tactful in presenting the gospel message in a manner that will reach the hearts of those we long to see save.

Amen, Brother Beacon, Sister Dorine, and Brother Richard!

Even when you do not feel like you are worth it, Jesus sees your true value, for He paid for your life with His very blood! Let us appreciate the loveliness of Jesus and let Him work in and through us so by the power of transforming grace we may have new hearts, new minds, and a full infilling of the Holy Spirit manifested in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (without one of the fruits of the Spirit missing!). Praise the Lord God can do this great miracle in us!

"When to human eyes her case appeared hopeless, Christ saw in Mary capabilities for good. He saw the better traits of her character. The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized. Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature. The one who had fallen, and whose mind had been a habitation of demons, was brought very near to the Saviour in fellowship and ministry. It was Mary who sat at His feet and learned of Him. It was Mary who poured upon His head the precious anointing oil, and bathed His feet with her tears. Mary stood beside the cross, and followed Him to the sepulcher. Mary was first at the tomb after His resurrection. It was Mary who first proclaimed a risen Saviour." {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 2}

Jesus is not only a risen Savior, He is also our High Priest in heaven, interceding for us and working out His plan to restore us fully to the moral image God intended for us to have in our creation. Then He is very soon to come as our King, taking the redeemed saints to heaven--both the resurrected and those who will be translated! As we learn of Him, we may experience rest of soul by having selfishness banished by His selfless love!

I was struck with this short paragraph near the end of this chapter Christ does not tell anyone who comes to Him all that he may reveal, He just calls all souls to come to him and He will pardon all who come to him for forgiveness, but this was not the end of the statement, just asking for forgiveness is not all, we need to ask for restoration as well, we need to be willing to give that sin to Jesus with no plans to repeat it again. So God can restore us i.e. finish the good work He has begun in us. This we need for the plan of salvation to be completed in us.

Go higher. Listen not to the voice of accusing, but the loving voice of Jesus inviting you to repent and overcome sin by the merits of His blood so that His character may be reproduced in you. Let the experience of Mary Magdalene whom Jesus healed and pardoned encourage you to believe more fully, pray more fervently, and realize the power of God's grace to transform sinners into saints imbued with all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing! Let Jesus live out His life in you today in affectionate obedience to His law of love!

"The souls that turn to Him for refuge, Jesus lifts above the accusing and the strife of tongues. No man or evil angel can impeach these souls. Christ unites them to His own divine-human nature. They stand beside the great Sin Bearer, in the light proceeding from the throne of God. 'Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.' Romans 8:33, 34." {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 5}

As we realize the power of grace, we will gladly extend it to others! May you let the grace of God flow through you on a moment-by-moment basis today through constant union and communion with God by the Holy Spirit!

"By curing Simon of leprosy, Christ had saved him from a living death. Jesus knows nothing of this woman who is so free in her demonstrations, he thought, or He would not allow her to touch Him."

Only Jesus in the heart can cleanse it from such error. As we study the life of Mary and the attitude of Jesus towards her no one can honestly look down their nose at anyone they think as not worthy of Jesus' love and mercy. Simon had a heart change when He saw how the grace of Jesus protected his reputation when Jesus could have openly revealed what really resided there. This is an amazing story that affects me deeply every time I read it.

Amen dear Sister Dorine!! Grace has a greater effect upon those who are forgiven much.

In today's reading we find something we hardly ever, if at all, hear from the pulpit or published on our presses.

"He saw the better traits of her character. The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities, and in Mary these possibilities were to be realized." Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature."

"The souls that turn to Him for refuge, Jesus lifts above the accusing and the strife of tongues. No man or evil angel can impeach these souls. Christ unites them to His own divine-human nature.

The Bible tells us this in 2 Peter 1:4. "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."

Let us pray that ministers in God's church will preach this most amazing truth. This is how the Bible can call those who are converted "holy." God wants you to be holy today. And you will be holy if you will allow Jesus to take possession of your whole heart....no matter what you have done in the past. Grace is the power that brings us to this point, and we need this grace daily.

"Simon of Bethany was accounted a disciple of Jesus. He was one of the few Pharisees who had openly joined Christ's followers. He acknowledged Jesus as a teacher, and hoped that He might be the Messiah, but he had not accepted Him as a Saviour. His character was not transformed; his principles were unchanged."

This opening paragraph struck me this morning.  How many who claim to be followers of Christ today are in the same condition as Simon in this story? The bible gives us a standard by which we judge a persons character and that is by the fruits of the Spirit with not one missing. When we love God our spirit will be like His and all will know that Jesus resides in our hearts. The best part of the story of Simon is his change of heart as a result of the gentle way that Jesus reproved him. We too can be used by God to help turn someone to Christ by our love and gentleness when they are in need of spiritual guidance.

How many of us like Simon do not show forth our love of Christ's gift of forgiveness on the cross, the dying on Calvary, so we could by faith claim His wonderful free gift of salvation, are we truly grateful for the free gift of grace or do we take if for granted, does this unmeasurable love poured out from heaven show forth to those around us as we come in contact with them. Jesus kindness, love, and care for us should be reflected to all of those around us.

Amen Pastor Sean! What a blessing to know that our sins can be forgiven. The question is do we want to be forgiven? Those who sin and do not ask for forgiveness are rejecting the great sacrifice made for them. Why would someone not ask for forgiveness? Some believe they do not have to repent in order to be saved. Why would they believe this? Because much of professing Christianity have been taught that they need  not repent of sins if they have been converted. They believe they do not have to be "re-justified" after sinning a known sin. There are many teachings that give salvation in sin, that God knows you will repent so you are covered by His righteousness.

The truth is that if we confess our sins, He will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. "Freely will He pardon all who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration."

What is out motivation for being sorry for our sins? Why do we want to be forgiven? To obtain heaven? No, that is not why we truly repent and change our lives. We do it because we love God. Why do we love Him, because we see His great love for us. We want to glorify God. We want to please our Savior. How do we know He is pleased when we truly repent, when we give honor and glory to Him? We read this in today's chapter.

When Mary honored Jesus "it gladdened His heart with the assurance of her faith and love." Her act we know pleased Him then, but more than that "as He went down into the darkness of His great trial, He carried with Him the memory of that deed." How important are our deeds which reveal our great love for Him?  They are "an earnest of the love that would be His from His redeemed ones forever."

Let us today give Jesus something He will remember forever. What a privilege is ours!!!

Jesus, keep me near the cross,
  There a precious fountain,
Free to all—a healing stream,
  Flows from Calv’ry’s mountain.
    In the cross, in the cross,
  Be my glory ever;
From the cross my ransomed soul
    Nothing then shall sever.
2
Near the cross, a trembling soul,
  Love and mercy found me;
There the Bright and Morning Star
  Sheds its beams around me.
3
Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
  Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day,
  With its shadow o’er me.
4
Near the cross I’ll watch and wait,
  Hoping, trusting ever,
Till I see my Savior’s face,
  Leave His presence never.

Happy Sabbath my TRO family. It's a bitter cold day but a lovely sunny one here on the east coast. Sitting here at my computer in the quietness of our home it's hard to believe the devastating things that are happening around the world. Our prayers are especially with the people of the Ukraine right now.

I never tire of reading the story of Mary. It's not so much about Mary that attracts me but what it reveals of the deep love and longsuffering of our Lord. It was His love and forgiveness that drew Mary to Him. His grace transformed her life. It is the same for each of us. When we realize our great need of Him and how far we have transgressed His law, we are filled with joyful gratitude to hear His sweet voice speak to us, "neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more." When conversion is genuine we will love and adore Him always and when we fall we remember that love drew us to Him and love brings us back to full favour with Jesus.

Happy Sabbath, Brother Beacon and Sister Dorine! Let us keep the precious souls in Russia and Ukraine in prayer in this time of crisis!

Praise the Lord for how God can give us hearts that lovingly respond to opportunities to be a blessing to others! When we behold the loveliness of Jesus, surrender the whole heart to Him, and allow Him to truly convert us, all of the fruits of the Spirit will be seen in our lives without one missing as we gladly obey God from the new heart!

"Christ values acts of heartfelt courtesy. When anyone did Him a favor, with heavenly politeness He blessed the actor. He did not refuse the simplest flower plucked by the hand of a child, and offered to Him in love. He accepted the offerings of children, and blessed the givers, inscribing their names in the book of life. In the Scriptures, Mary's anointing of Jesus is mentioned as distinguishing her from the other Marys. Acts of love and reverence for Jesus are an evidence of faith in Him as the Son of God. And the Holy Spirit mentions, as evidences of woman's loyalty to Christ: 'If she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.' 1 Timothy 5:10." {The Desire of Ages, page 564, paragraph 4}

May we go forth in every way possible to share the light of Christ's character in blessing others, helping each to come to the knowledge of the present truth and appreciate the character experience that God offers us in Christ!

Amen my brothers and sister! Today's reading is the story of the power of God's grace. Grace that surrounds us as thick as the air we breathe. Yet, many refuse to accept it. It is the story of sinners forgiven and sinners unforgiven. All may be saved if we will turn to Jesus for forgiveness.

     Mary had been looked upon as a great sinner, but Christ knew the circumstances that had shaped her life. He might have extinguished every spark of hope in her soul, but He did not. You don't know. When you look at others, you do not know the circumstances that shaped their experience, and in Christ's dealing with Mary and Simon we see a profound lesson of compassion, pity and longsuffering love that has the power to lead even the most hardened sinner to repentance and transformation. Let us choose to love people the way Christ did--always manifesting mercy without sacrificing justice, for He Himself became our Sin-Bearer and offers us His grace to overcome. When we yield the whole heart to His miraculous, converting grace, all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing will be manifest in our lives, for Christ abides in us, the hope of glory, as He empowers us to obey His commandments from the heart!

"Jesus knows the circumstances of every soul. You may say, I am sinful, very sinful. You may be; but the worse you are, the more you need Jesus. He turns no weeping, contrite one away. He does not tell to any all that He might reveal, but He bids every trembling soul take courage. Freely will He pardon all who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration." {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 3}

Let us come to Christ, just as we are, and invite all others to do the same. Only in Him and through Him and by Him is there power and pardon to find victory over sin in a moment-by-moment union and communion of our souls with Christ that enables us to do His will, no matter how far we fell into sin! Let us really believe God loves us and means to do us good, and go forth on missions of mercy to bless others, even as Jesus did!

Amen Pastor Sean! God loves us and wants to forgive us when we sin. He has proved this over and over. Today I was impressed that we ought to do more than we do, for Jesus.

This is not about what we do, but what we do not do. How shameful! Let us show Jesus our gratitude today by words and deeds of love.

"When to human eyes her case appeared hopeless, Christ saw in Mary capabilities for good."

"He saw the better traits of her character."

"The plan of redemption has invested humanity with great possibilities."

"in Mary these possibilities were to be realized."

Through His grace she became a partaker of the divine nature.

"The one who had fallen, and whose mind had been a habitation of demons, was brought very near to the Saviour in fellowship and ministry. It was Mary who sat at His feet and learned of Him. It was Mary who poured upon His head the precious anointing oil, and bathed His feet with her tears. Mary stood beside the cross, and followed Him to the sepulcher. Mary was first at the tomb after His resurrection."

"It was Mary who first proclaimed a risen Saviour."

When we look at our family members or those with whom we associate in the church or in the community at large. What do we focus on?? Their "strengths" or Their "weakness'? Do we seek to draw them closer to Jesus or take the name's off the church books? In this story there is a clear-cut  example of what Jesus would have us do---don't you agree!!

============================

   Living for Jesus a life that is true,
Striving to please Him in all that I do;
Yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free,
This is the pathway of blessing for me.
    O Jesus, Lord and Savior,
I give myself to Thee,
For Thou, in Thy [redemption],*
Didst give Thyself for me;
I own no other Master,
My heart shall be Thy throne,
My life I give, henceforth to live,
O Christ, for Thee alone.
2
Living for Jesus who died in my place,
Bearing on Calv’ry my sin and disgrace;
Such love constrains me to answer His call,
Follow His leading and give Him my all.
3
Living for Jesus wherever I am,
Doing each duty in His holy name;
Willing to suffer affliction and loss,
Deeming each trial a part of my cross.
4
Living for Jesus through earth’s little while,
My dearest treasure, the light of His smile;
Seeking the lost ones He died to redeem,
Bringing the weary to find rest in Him

"Christ delighted in the earnest desire of Mary to do the will of her Lord."

"The desire that Mary had to do this service for her Lord was of more value to Christ than all the precious ointment in the world, because it expressed her appreciation of the world's Redeemer."

"It was the love of Christ that constrained her."

"The matchless excellence of the character of Christ filled her soul."

"That ointment was a symbol of the heart of the giver."

"It was the outward demonstration of a love fed by heavenly streams until it overflowed."

"The souls that turn to Him for refuge, Jesus lifts above the accusing and the strife of tongues.

"No man or evil angel can impeach these souls."

"Christ unites them to His own divine-human nature."

"They stand beside the great Sin Bearer, in the light proceeding from the throne of God."

"Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.' Romans 8:33, 34."

Dear Friends, let us never ever doubt the saving Mercy & Grace of our Lord & Saviour. He did it for Mary and He longs to do the same for all of us. Praise His Holy Name. Are we willing to surrender All to Jesus?

1
I’ve wandered far away from God,
  Now I’m coming home;
The paths of sin too long I’ve trod,
  Lord, I’m coming home.
    Coming home, coming home,
  Nevermore to roam;
Open wide Thine arms of love;
    Lord, I’m coming home.
2
I’ve wasted many precious years,
  Now I’m coming home;
I now repent with bitter tears,
  Lord, I’m coming home.
3
I’m tired of sin and straying, Lord,
  Now I’m coming home;
I’ll trust Thy love, believe Thy word;
  Lord, I’m coming home.
4
My soul is sick, my heart is sore,
  Now I’m coming home;
My strength renew, my hope restore:
  Lord, I’m coming home.
5
My only hope, my only plea,
  Now I’m coming home;
That Jesus died, and died for me;
  Lord, I’m coming home.
6
I need His cleansing blood, I know,
  Now I’m coming home;
O wash me whiter than the snow;
  Lord, I’m coming home.

Amen, Brother Beacon!

Are you too sinful be saved?

"Jesus knows the circumstances of every soul. You may say, I am sinful, very sinful. You may be; but the worse you are, the more you need Jesus. He turns no weeping, contrite one away. He does not tell to any all that He might reveal, but He bids every trembling soul take courage. Freely will He pardon all who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration." {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 3}

No one is too sinful to be saved--come to Christ just as you are, and let Him transform your heart and mind as you yield your will to Him by choosing Christ as your personal Lord and Savior! He will fill you with all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing as you abide in His infinite love, moving you in deep ardent affectionate love to obey Him who first loved you! What a miracle the experience of salvation is from Jesus!

"Christ might commission the angels of heaven to pour out the vials of His wrath on our world, to destroy those who are filled with hatred of God. He might wipe this dark spot from His universe. But He does not do this. He is today standing at the altar of incense, presenting before God the prayers of those who desire His help."

No one is beyond saving. No matter our past we may find rest and forgiveness in the saving grace of Jesus by committing our entire lives to Him and maintaining a moment by moment relationship with Him. Even when we take our eyes off Jesus He does not cast us away. Just like Mary's experience we may need to come to Jesus many times for cleansing. I find the story of Mary heart warming. In spite of her past life Jesus found comfort during difficult times by her sacrificial gift. Along with her sacrifice she gave Him her whole heart. That's what He longs for from each one. It's a simple yet profound message that needs to be shared with a lost world.

Amen, amen, and amen!!  What a beautiful story that will be told for eternity!  It is the power of grace to transform great sinners into saints. Not just Mary, but all who love the Lord our God with all of the heart. Hidden in today's reading reveal not just the matchless love of God, but His justice also. Many think of the great love that Jesus had for Judas, but neglect to understand that while Jesus loved Judas, this was not the only reason for allowing Judas to be one of His closest disciples. Jesus manifested  the Father's love for all. But, grace has its end. And even before its end, there is the need for reproof that sadly many do not understand nor will acknowledge. Did Jesus reprove Judas for his sins at this time of great love being revealed by Mary? Yes, He did, but it was restricted. Why, because of God's great love for Judas? No. Unlike the reproof of Simon which was a patient admonition, Jesus' rebuke of Judas was restricted  so that he would not gain sympathy, and an excuse for his treachery. It is Satan's work to separate mercy from justice, but let us present the character of God in its fullness. They both met at the cross.

Though restricted, it was a "direct rebuke."  Does that mean Jesus did not love Judas? Not at all. Even though Jesus knew what Judas was about to do, soon thereafter did not Jesus wash the feet of Judas? And did not the heart of Judas thrill for a moment. But, the grace of God does not work the transformation of character in all for whom it is given. Many are called, but few choose to follow the One who gave all that we might live. Let us continue to seek out those who are seeking truth, for Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.

1
Open my eyes that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.
    Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready, my God, Thy will to see;
Open my eyes, illumine me,
    Spirit Divine!
2
Open my ears that I may hear
Voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
Everything false will disappear.
3
Open my mouth and let me bear
Tidings of mercy everywhere;
Open my heart and let me prepare
Love with Thy children thus to share.
4
Open my mind that I may read
More of Thy love in word and deed;
What shall I fear while yet Thou dost lead?
Only for light from Thee I plead.

Amen, Brother Beacon! Only Christ can keep us from going the way of self that leads to death. We can choose Him as we get to know His love and not resist it!

Do you truly know God? Apparently Simon the Pharisee whom Christ healed of leprosy, when he saw Jesus allow Mary to anoint Him, had a certain idea of God that was not true to God's unselfish and merciful character. Christ sought to heal Simon's conception of His character and restore Simon's soul, even as He had done for Mary.

"But it was Simon's ignorance of God and of Christ that led him to think as he did. He did not realize that God's Son must act in God's way, with compassion, tenderness, and mercy. Simon's way was to take no notice of Mary's penitent service. Her act of kissing Christ's feet and anointing them with ointment was exasperating to his hardheartedness. He thought that if Christ were a prophet, He would recognize sinners and rebuke them." {The Desire of Ages, page 566, paragraph 3}

Thankfully, Christ's mission was not to destroy and condemn, but to uplift and heal. Even Simon, after Christ's heart-touching parable of the two debtors, was able to receive a true knowledge of God's character, and Simon became converted as a lowly, self-sacrificing disciple. Like Simon and Mary, we all need a Savior who can fill us with all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing as long as we are truly surrendered to Him and walking in harmony with the true character of God as He reveals Himself to us, for His law of unselfish love is His character! Praise the Lord for the miracle of conversion available to all who come to experience how "the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance" (Romans 2:4).

Amen Brother Beacon and Pastor Sean!  So many lessons in today's reading. But, because the church remains in a Laodicean condition, I want to continue to share the power of grace to transform sinners into saints.

Even if possessed by demons, Christ will cleanse the mind and heart whiter than snow.

"Indignation might have been excited against him for his oppression of the widow, the orphan, and the hireling."

What a sad and solemn warning to us today. We must make sure that we are filled with the compassion and love of Jesus when dealing with our brothers and sisters in the church who seem to be on the wrong spiritual track. Before taking any taking action"We" must learn to stop and pray asking ourselves..."What Would Jesus Do."  "WWJD ? " I believe that many souls could be retained if we followed this pattern.

1
Not I, but Christ be honored, loved, exalted,
Not I, but Christ be seen, be known and heard;
Not I, but Christ in every look and action,
Not I, but Christ in every thought and word.
  Oh, to be saved from myself, dear Lord,
  Oh, to be lost in Thee,
Oh, that it may be no more I,
    But Christ that lives in me.
2
Not I, but Christ to gently soothe in sorrow,
Not I, but Christ to wipe the falling tear;
Not I, but Christ to lift the weary burden,
Not I, but Christ to hush away all fear.
3
Christ, only Christ, no idle word e’er falling,
Christ, only Christ, no needless bustling sound;
Christ, only Christ, no self-important bearing,
Christ, only Christ, no trace of I be found.
4
Not I, but Christ my every need supplying,
Not I, but Christ my strength and health to be;
Christ, only Christ, for spirit, soul, and body,
Christ, only Christ, live then Thy life in me.
5
Christ, only Christ, ere long will fill my vision,
Glory excelling soon, full soon I’ll see;
Christ, only Christ, my every wish fulfilling,
Christ, only Christ, my all in all to be.

 Amen brother Beacon.   We ought to be like Mary and love the Lord our God with all of the heart! Nothing is too good for Jesus.

 As it was with Mary, So it will be with all who love Jesus with a whole heart. It is His love that constrains our good deeds.

Amen, Brother Beacon and Brother Richard!

Let it overflow! When you get to know Jesus' love so well that you cannot help but share it, you are experiencing the true grace of God that makes sinners into saints who love to express His character--all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing in harmony with God's law of love--to bless the Lord and others! Mary's example shows us what love does--it overflows!!

"Christ delighted in the earnest desire of Mary to do the will of her Lord. He accepted the wealth of pure affection which His disciples did not, would not, understand. It was the outward demonstration of a love fed by heavenly streams until it overflowed." {The Desire of Ages, page 564, paragraph 5}

May your experience of knowing and loving God in all the ways He has revealed Himself in Christ by the Holy Spirit lead you to overflow that love in blessing to others!

Praying for Brother Beacon's full recovery!!

Let the Holy Spirit lead you! Remember the offering of Mary that she lavished upon Jesus, as this shows us what happens when a heart is fully converted and in love with the Savior! We will long to be a blessing to Him and let the Holy Spirit plan for us! Not only will all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing be in our lives as we gladly obey His law of love, but we will find joy in blessing others, as Jesus loves to see His character being reproduced in us!

"Mary knew not the full significance of her deed of love. She could not answer her accusers. She could not explain why she had chosen that occasion for anointing Jesus. The Holy Spirit had planned for her, and she had obeyed His promptings. Inspiration stoops to give no reason. An unseen presence, it speaks to mind and soul, and moves the heart to action. It is its own justification." {The Desire of Ages, page 560, paragraph 4}

Are you grateful that Jesus came to save you from sin? Then prayerfully find ways to express your gratitude to Him! By beholding Jesus' loveliness of character and surrendering fully to Him in true repentance, all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing will be revealed in the life that is empowered to true obedience to God's commandments! Let Him lead you in the path of gratitude today, having "Mary Magdalene Moments" of creative ways to express how grateful you are to Him for His amazing salvation!

"The same want is evident in our world today. But few appreciate all that Christ is to them. If they did, the great love of Mary would be expressed, the anointing would be freely bestowed. The expensive ointment would not be called a waste. Nothing would be thought too costly to give for Christ, no self-denial or self-sacrifice too great to be endured for His sake." {The Desire of Ages, page 565, paragraph 3}

What a privilege it is to be a vessel in Jesus' hands to bless others! He loves us and desires to share with us the joy of seeing souls redeemed by giving us a part in sharing with others in reaching them for His kingdom! Praise God!

How kind Jesus was to Judas. No, that was not the case as many would believe. We read why it was that Jesus did not openly rebuke him. It was not out of love for Judas,  but concern for His disciples. Never should we separate mercy from justice, that is the work of satan.

Many people don’t realize that this Mary is actually Mary Magdalene. You have to go back to the original EGW sources to find it.

"He who reads the motives of every heart, and understands every action, might have opened before those at the feast dark chapters in the experience of Judas."

"The hollow pretense on which the traitor based his words might have been laid bare; for, instead of sympathizing with the poor, he was robbing them of the money intended for their relief."

"Indignation might have been excited against him for his oppression of the widow, the orphan, and the hireling. But had Christ unmasked Judas, this would have been urged as a reason for the betrayal."

"All though charged with being a thief, Judas would have gained sympathy, even among the disciples."

 "The Saviour reproached him not, and thus avoided giving him an excuse for his treachery."

"But the look which Jesus cast upon Judas convinced him that the Saviour penetrated his hypocrisy, and read his base, contemptible character. And in commending Mary's action, which had been so severely condemned, Christ had rebuked Judas"

"Prior to this, the Saviour had never given him a direct rebuke. Now the reproof rankled in his heart. He determined to be revenged. From the supper he went directly to the palace of the high priest, where he found the council assembled, and he offered to betray Jesus into their hands.
"

Have "WE" ever been determined to be revenged??  Is that what Jesus would have"US" do??  Let us be careful with our Words & Actions.

Earthly pleasures vainly call me,
  I would be like Jesus;
Nothing worldly shall enthrall me,
  I would be like Jesus.
    Be like Jesus, this my song,
  In the home and in the throng;
Be like Jesus, all day long!
    I would be like Jesus.
2
He has broken every fetter,
  I would be like Jesus;
That my soul may serve Him better,
  I would be like Jesus.
3
All the way from earth to glory,
  I would be like Jesus;
Telling o’er and o’er the story,
  I would be like Jesus.

Amen Brother Beacon!!  There are two groups forming in this world, those who love God and those who remain at enmity with Him. The lesson in this chapter is summed up to encourage us:

"Simon was touched by the kindness of Jesus in not openly rebuking him before the guests. His pride was humbled, he repented, and the proud Pharisee became a lowly, self-sacrificing disciple."

I'm so thankful that Jesus' ways are not our ways. He does not treat us in the way we deserve but shows us that His love protects our reputation while wooing us into an abiding relationship with Him. Simon was smitten with the gentleness of Jesus towards him. Christ never condones sin but loves us with a love that took Him to the cross.

Amen, Brother Beacon, Brother Richard and Sister Dorine!

Happy Sabbath!!

“The work of Mary was just the lesson the disciples needed to show them that the expression of their love for Him would be pleasing to Christ. He had been everything to them, and they did not realize that soon they would be deprived of His presence, that soon they could offer Him no token of their gratitude for His great love. The loneliness of Christ, separated from the heavenly courts, living the life of humanity, was never understood or appreciated by the disciples as it should have been. He was often grieved because His disciples did not give Him that which He should have received from them. He knew that if they were under the influence of the heavenly angels that accompanied Him, they too would think no offering of sufficient value to declare the heart’s spiritual affection.” {The Desire of Ages, page 565, paragraph 1}

Let’s allow Jesus to fill our hearts with His converting love to overflow in being a blessing as He first blessed us! All of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing will be manifest in the life that is fully surrendered to Him! Let’s show Jesus our heart’s spiritual affection who left heaven to make heaven accessible to us by His great sacrifice!

1
Come, every soul by sin oppressed,
  There’s mercy with the Lord;
And He will surely give you rest
  By trusting in His Word.
    Only trust Him! Only trust Him!
  Only trust Him now!
He will save you! He will save you!
    He will save you now!
2
For Jesus shed His precious blood
  Rich blessings to bestow;
Plunge now into the crimson flood
  That washeth white as snow.
3
Yes, Jesus is the Truth, the Way,
  That leads you into rest;
Believe in Him without delay,
  And you are fully blest.
4
Come then, and join the holy band,
  And on to glory go;
In Christ’s redemption take your stand,
  And all His goodness know.

How can anyone turn away from this offer? When I came to accept this truth for myself my life took a change I never thought possible. He will do it for all if they will only give Him a chance. Look what He did for Mary. This story shows the depth of compassion and mercy Jesus has for each soul.

Amen, Brother Beacon and Sister Dorine! What an amazing Savior we have in Jesus!

Are you deeply grateful for what Jesus has done for you? God will have a people that love and obey Him on the earth even when all earthly supports are cut off (see Revelation 13:11-17). God is able to help keep our focus on Jesus as the motivation for faithfulness; by beholding His pure, unselfish love, we are changed into His image (character). We can be an encouragement to Jesus' tender, loving heart by responding to the everlasting gospel of His grace for this time (see Revelation 14:6-12). As Jesus comes to abide in us and we abide in Him in a full surrender, all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing will be seen in our lives, for we will be empowered by His divine nature accessible to us by His promises to obey Him and serve Him with gladness!

"The work of Mary was just the lesson the disciples needed to show them that the expression of their love for Him would be pleasing to Christ. Let us cultivate spiritual affection for our loving God and for the people around us. Let us realize the value of each soul--and see them as priceless jewels that Christ yearns to have with Him throughout the ceaseless ages of eternity. As we do value Christ and the souls around us, our whole lives come to take on the genuine tone of spiritual worship, where all we say and do is for the glory of God, and we sow the seeds to love and truth that are a part of how God woos the heart to Himself. The bliss of true conversion cannot be fully put into words. You can only fully know it by experience.

Amen my dear brothers and sister! What does conversion look like? And what is it that causes the heart to love the Lord our God supremely? We love Him because He first revealed His great love for us. It was this love that constrained Mary to love Him so deeply.

Yes, it is this love that reaches deep into the soul that is revealed in our words and deeds. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

So we see the love of Christ given to Mary, forgiveness of her sins, filled her with the love of Christ so it overflowed to those around her. May we also  be filled with God's love, "Fill me up Lord, Fill me up, that I may overflow", may this be the experience we have when we surrender all to God, and accept His unmerited grace for us.

Amazing grace! how sweet the sound,
  That saved a wretch; like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
  Was blind, but now I see.
2
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
  And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
  The hour I first believed!
3
The Lord hath promised good to me,
  His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
  As long as life endures.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
  Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
  Than when we first begun.

Amen, Brother Beacon!

Take courage in Jesus!

"The souls that turn to Him for refuge, Jesus lifts above the accusing and the strife of tongues. No man or evil angel can impeach these souls. Christ unites them to His own divine-human nature. They stand beside the great Sin Bearer, in the light proceeding from the throne of God. 'Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.' Romans 8:33, 34." {The Desire of Ages, page 568, paragraph 5}

In remembering the experience of Mary Magdalene, we see there is hope for all of us. Jesus sees all we can be! He yearns to pardon, heal and restore us to His image by uniting us with His divine-human nature! As we are fully surrendered to Him in true conversion, all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing will flow forth from our lives as a genuine witness that Christ lives in us, the hope of glory! Gladly will we be empowered to obey God in accordance with His royal law of love revealed in the Ten Commandments, for He sets us free from sin! Praise God!

Pastor Sean, I love that you've stressed that there is hope for all and how He desires to forgive. Its not something that He withholds from those who desperately see their need. Your thought directly leads into this part that I just love reading every time. Hope for the most sinful, hope to the uttermost!!

Amen my dear brothers! Such love, such wisdom in dealing with sin. We have two examples of how the love of God constrains sinners to repentance. It is not the fear of hell nor the promise of life eternal, but God's grace that transforms sinners into saints.
