Most Beautiful Hymns
« on: February 28, 2008, 10:12:57 PM »
Singing praises to God is just as much worship as is preaching a sermon.  Shall we share some of the music that has touched our hearts?

We are creating libraries of music, video, text, books, etc.  Bear with us as we clean things up.  As with the GC session interviews, we are getting material online that will be edited later. It takes time. But, we want to make available this material because we believe it will strengthen our Christian experience. In this case with the music, we have video and some will be edited, some will be deleted. Other video has kept us from putting it online. So, it is not that we have not examined the material first. I have. But, it does need to be cleaned up. Please suggest any ideas you have or any concerns.

Rock of Ages

It is Well With My Soul

Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Pass Me Not O Gentle Saviour

Be Thou My Vision

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

Jesus is the Lighthouse

From Every Stormy Wind

I Will Sing of My Redeemer

Shall We Gather at the River?

Abide With Me

There is a Fountain

Let the Lower Lights be Burning

Fairest Lord Jesus

O Perfect Love

Revive Us Again

Amazing Grace

I Will Sing of My Redeemer

Jesus, Saviour, Pilot Me

Higher Ground

And Can it Be

Nearer My God to Thee

Jesus Lover of My Soul

'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus

Faith of Our Fathers

O God Do Thou Sustain Me

Softly and Tenderly

My Saviour's Love For Me

Near the Cross

He Leadeth Me

Love Divine

Near to the Heart of God

Oh, there are so many!

I think my favorite is "I'd Rather Have Jesus" - page 327 in the current hymnal. Every time we sing it, I am reminded of the time when riches meant more to me than anything - when friends and even family members took first place in my heart. But not any more ...

There is nothing so beautiful as to stand back and listen to a congregation sing this song, looking at their sweet faces as they sing:

"Than to be the king
of a vast domain
Or be held in sin's dread sway"

It is simply breath-taking.

I love that song too. It is so precious. I am thinking also of "Jesus Is The Sweetest Name I Know".  The things that are sweet and wonderful to us now are heavenly things, and at the top of that list is Jesus, and His Name "Is" the Sweetest Name we Know. :)
With Christian Love,
Marie

So many of the great hymns came out of a profound experience with God, and they are products of those experiences.

Some of my favorites:

"It is Well with My Soul."  What an amazing story leading up to the writing of that hymn.

"Will Your Anchor Hold?"  Something to ponder in these troublous times.

"Faith is the Victory."

"Amazing Grace."  We should all take that to heart.

"When the Roll is Called up Yonder."  May we all be there!
So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants:  we have done that which was our duty to do.  Luke 17:10

That story is a real heart breaker yet shows faith of incredible magnitude, doesn't it?

Tucked safely "somewhere" is a recording made in 1950s of my grandfather, little brother and I singing this song. It was Papa's favorite. I had just managed to learn to play the piano with two hands while my brother and I sang "parts" with Papa singing the lead. What precious memories.

To this day, it is my favorite to play during offertory.

I recall a portion of the story. The author, Horatio Gates Spafford, had lost a child, then suffered from a fire, and then lost more of his family from a ship sinking. Maybe someone can fill in the pieces.  The music and the words are inspired and understood to be what they are. This is the meaning of religious music, of true worship in praise to God in the middle of great loss! Looking unto Jesus!

And, Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be site, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll, The trump shall resound and the Lord shall decend,

"Even so"--it is well with my soul.

Amen!!!   Would you like a blessing today?  Here is the music for you to praise God with song. Below are the words.

Sing with understanding, joy, and praise!!

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

And Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Amen, Richard! Beautiful!

I played that very song today for offertory.  Last year when I played it for offering, one of the elders on the podium was quietly singing along with his eyes closed. It was so sweet to hear that I joined in, then ones in the congregation joined in - soon, the entire congregation was singing it. Oh! It was one of the most moving things I have ever experienced. Spontaneous and from the heart!

It is a most precious hymn!

Amen!  Let's look at the words in the first verse:

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,

It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Amen!! This can only be known by experience. We cannot give it to another. Only Jesus can give this peace that passes understanding in the middle of the storm.

And the second verse:

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,

Let this blest assurance control,

That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,

And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

Trials will come to us as they did to the author of this song. He was in great pain, but in the midst of his great trials, he remembered His Lord and His suffering. By faith he beheld Jesus at his right hand to uphold and sustain him. He held onto that blessed assurance of Christ's love and care for his soul, and the souls of his children.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

I have a CD of Charles Haugabrooks I got at campmeeting in 1998.  He sings that song on it and I have played it many many times.  It always moves me and that is one of my favorite cds.

Larry - the Lord has blest that man with an incredible voice. It is absolute perfection. When I consider the perfect male voice, it is always his that comes to mind.

I feel deprived!  As much as I love holy music, I have not tried to find such to listen to. I would rather sing, but I do enjoy listening to and singing with those who manifest the character of Christ in song. Is there somewhere online I can listen to this song or another by this brother?

You could probably google his name and find "samples" from a CD.

He has the best control over his voice of most I have ever heard. His phrasing, his breathing - his range. Magnificent - even exceeds Phipps and that is difficult to do, IMO.

Am on a mission to locate some good hymns we can share. This one is an MP3 - "In the Garden." This man's voice is "full" - yet he sings it very well.

Here is one that we sang last Sabbath for the closing hymn. I loved the message.

How Far From Home

by Annie R. Smith

How far from home? I asked, as on I bent my steps--The watchman spake:
"The Long , dark night is almost gone, The morning soon will break.
Then weep no more, but speed thy flight, With Hope's bright star thy guiding ray,
Till thou shalt reach the realms of light, In everylasting day."

I asked the warrior on the field; This was his soul inspiring song:
"With Courage, bold, the sword I'll wield, The battle is not long.
Then weep no more, but well endure The configlict, till thy work is done;
For this we know, the prize is sure, When victory is won."

I asked again; earth, sea, and sun, Seemed with one voice to make reply:
"Time's wasting sands are nearly run, Eternity is nigh.
Then weep no more, with warning tones, Portentous signs are thickening round,
The whole creation, waiting, groans, To hear the trumpet sound."

Not far from home! O Blessed thought! The traveler's lonely heart to cheer;
Which oft a healing balm has brought, And dried the mourner's tear.
Then weep no more, since we shall meet Where weary foot steps never roam
Our trials past, our joys complete, Safe in our Father's home.
By communion with God in nature, the mind is uplifted, and the heart finds rest.  {DA 291.1}

As a little girl of ten, my younger brother (eight) and I sang this song anytime someone would ask us. Our dad was a drunk, abusive, contrary in every aspect of his life. Each time we sang it we cried because we were singing about him and our desperate need for him to find Jesus. We knew everything would be better if only our dad had Jesus sitting squarely in his heart.

Then Jesus Came

Verse 1:
One sat alone beside the highway begging,
His eyes were blind, the light he could not see.
He clutched his rags and shivered in the shadows
Then Jesus came and bade his darkness flee.

Chorus:
When Jesus comes, the tempter's power is broken;
When Jesus comes, the tears are wiped away,
He takes the gloom and fills the life with glory,
For all is changed when Jesus comes to stay.

Verse 2:
From home and friends the evil spirits drove him,
Among the tombs he dwelt in misery;
He cut himself as demon powers possessed him,
Then Jesus came and set the captive free.

Verse 3:
"Unclean, unclean!" the leper cried in torment,
The deaf, the dumb, in helplessness stood near;
The fever raged, disease had gripped its' victim,
Then Jesus came and cast out every fear.

Verse 4:
Their hearts were sad as in the tomb they laid him,
For death had come and taken him away;
Their night was dark and bitter tears were falling,
Then Jesus came and night was turned to day.

Verse 5:
So men today have found the Savior able,
They could not conquer passion, lust and sin;
Their broken hearts had left them sad and lonely,
Then Jesus came and dwelt, Himself, within.
  For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. Psalm 119:89

We sang this at the Michigan Conference session this last sunday. Hymns have such deep meaning. Some more than others... but I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

I saw One weary
Annie Smith

I saw one weary, sad, and torn,
With eager steps press on the way,
Who long the hallowed cross had borne,
Still looking for the promised day;
While many a line of grief and care,
Upon his brow, was furrowed there;
I asked what buoyed his spirits up,
“O this!” said he—“the blessèd hope.

And one I saw, with sword and shield,
Who boldly braved the world’s cold frown,
And fought, unyielding, on the field,
To win an everlasting crown.
Though worn with toil, oppressed by foes,
No murmur from his heart arose;
I asked what buoyed his spirits up,
“O this!” said he—“the blessèd hope.”

And there was one who left behind
The cherished friends of early years,
And honor, pleasure, wealth resigned,
To tread the path bedewed with tears.
Through trials deep and conflicts sore,
Yet still a smile of joy he wore;
I asked what buoyed his spirits up,
“O this!” said he—“the blessèd hope.”

While pilgrims here we journey on
In this dark vale of sin and gloom,
Through tribulation, hate, and scorn,
Or through the portals of the tomb,
Till our returning King shall come
To take His exile captives home,
O! what can buoy the spirits up?
’Tis this alone—the blessèd hope.
