The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), along with a team of volunteers, has helped build a new school in Kosovo that will provide improved facilities for more than 250 students. The project was started late 2000 and finished in May this year. An opening ceremony for the new building was attended by a Czech Republic ambassador, representatives of the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, local authorities, and more than 1,000 other guests.

Pravo, a local newspaper, compared the original school building to "a house from the ghetto." Norma Sahlin, ADRA media relations manager, said 257 children were crowded into three classrooms. Facilities were sub-standard with parts of the roof falling in during classes. The new school has five classrooms, a director's room, a teacher's room, a cloak room, and a room for archives.

Volunteers from the Czech Republic and Moldova, most under 30 years of age, lived in a small house without water, had electricity only two hours a day, and slept in sleeping bags on the floor.

When asked by Pravo if his trip to Kosovo had been influenced by the fact that he is a Seventh-day Adventist, one of the volunteers answered: "Yes--my church membership gave me a different view of this world."

ADRA volunteers also received help from Czech soldiers. The government of the Czech Republic donated approximately $120,000 for the project, and $10,000 was contributed through ADRA Czech.
