316. The red drink to consume before bed that can help you sleep and boost the immune system

The tryptophan and melatonin content of this fruit drink could be the secret to its slumber-inducing properties.

The Sleep Foundation has suggested that a specific fruit drink could improve both your sleep quality and quantity. Its website explained: “Studies suggest that consuming tart cherry juice leads to better and longer sleep.”

“Every 100 grams of tart cherries contain about nine milligrams of tryptophan. There is evidence to show that drinking tart cherry juice increases melatonin available in the body and can promote better sleep quality.

They referenced a study, published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, which tested the effect of tart cherry juice on otherwise healthy adults with chronic insomnia. Study authors said the drink was associated with “statistically significant pre- to post-treatment improvements on all sleep variables”.

The study concluded: “The results of this pilot study suggest that CherryPharm, a tart cherry juice blend, has modest beneficial effects on sleep in older adults with insomnia with effect sizes equal to or exceeding those observed in studies of valerian and in some, but not all, studies of melatonin, the two most studied natural products for insomnia.”
