While preparing a sermon last week, I found a few verses that support what we must do in order to enter heaven. Our part is immeasureably small and God's part is immeasurably large. Without our part we shall be forever lost. Our part is to behold the glory of God. When we behold His glory which is His character we shall be transformed into is image (2 Cor. 3:18). In 2 Peter chapter one we find this:
1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that [pertain] unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
I was preaching on the fourth verse, the promises of God, and decided I wanted it in context for the Scripture reading. As I studied the first three verses I realized what a blessing they are. Verse one: to those who are converted through the righteousness of God and His Son. Yes, it is the love of God, His grace by which we are saved. But, there is more. Verse two: Grace comes to us when we learn of God and His Son. If we do not learn of Him, then we waste the grace by which we are saved. It will do us no good if we do not bring it into our heart. Verse three: God has given us all we need to know to have eternal life and holiness. It can only come through the knowledge of God. Verse four: The great and precious promises offered us, beginning with Gen 3:15 (transformation of character) which when received we will have two natures. We will retain our fallen nature, but will become partakers of God's divine nature. We then having the third person of the Godhead in possession of our heart will be empowered to keep the body (flesh) under at all times. We will be at enmity with Satan and sin and aligned with God, His Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Having studied these four verses, we are convinced that our part is to behold the loveliness of Jesus daily. To cling to Him moment by moment. This truly is our part. It would be very good to spend a thoughtful hour a day contemplating the life of Jesus, especially the closing scenes where we see His bruised body by which we are healed (Isa 53).
