2 Corinthians 5:21
For he hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.
Amen dear sister! We need to explain this so all might understand that Jesus did not just die for us, but He had to suffer for each and every sin of every single person who ever lived on this dark spot in the universe. He was indeed made sin for us. This is why when He told Moses to make a brazen serpent and lift it up and tell the people who had been bitten by the fiery serpents that if they looked upon this uplifted serpent they would be healed. (Numbers 21:9). Many have no idea what Jesus was saying to Nicodemus and us. There was no power in the uplifted serpent. The power that healed came from God. It was an object lesson that we might know the answer to that all important question that Nicodemus asked;
How can these things be? John 3:8. How can I be born again of the Spirit. How can I be saved?
"As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up" (John 3:14)......that we might "look and live." Why a brass serpent? The brass serpent represented Jesus being uplifted on the cross because He was made sin for us. The serpent represented sin that was placed on Jesus. When the Israelite brought his lamb for a sin offering, he placed his hands on the head of the lamb, confessed his sins and then killed the lamb. He was instructed that the lamb represented Jesus, the confession of sins on the head of the lamb was representing us giving our sins to Jesus. Thus when all of the sins were accepted by Christ, He had to pay the price of all of our sins, the sins of the whole world. Yes, He was made sin and it crushed His heart, then He rested in peace. It was what He suffered before He died that allows us the opportunity to be transformed as we read in this verse:
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Amen! When baptized it is a symbol of this transformation wherein we are new creatures revealing to a world the power of grace to transform sinners into saints. Grace is revealed by our Savior being made sin for us and then paying the price as He hung on the cross. It is by those stripes that belonged to us that we are healed.
