Pastor Sean Brizendine:
"The Story of the Cross"
by Pastor Sean Brizendine, an original poem, created on Thursday, August 26, 2022, finished at 2:02pm Central Time

He knew it would happen before He made us
He already had a plan
With infinite love He formed us
From the dust He breathed
He is our breath, the I AM
With freedom of choice He entrusted
The real capacity to love
But in this took the risk of ages
Knowing what it would fully cost
As our first parents
Enjoyed open communion
Face to face
It was with the Son of God
That Adam and Eve shared love day to day
But when Eve listened to the serpent
And her thinking became confused
She ate from the forbidden tree
Because upon sin's "benefits" she mused
Oh, what pain and sadness
The heart of Infinite Love did feel
But the story just kept unfolding
As Adam took the fruit Eve recommended
And in transgression our entire race fell
While from the standpoint of deception
Satan had tricked Eve and Adam chose sin
The sad truth would now be unfolded
Only One could pay the price, and interpose
It was before the Father that the Son of God pleaded
He volunteered--He chose
To step down from the throne of eternal glory
To come as a Babe in Bethlehem
To dwell with us so we could know
A love that to a sinner is incomprehensible
It cannot be explained so as to be known
A love that must be experienced
To be fully, truly known
And as the Father "so loved" us that He sent Jesus
Our hearts begin to move
As we contemplate the perfect life He lived here
In the sinful world of pain we know
As Satan tried his fiercest temptations
It was to the Father's hand Jesus clung
For every temptation He had one weapon
"It is written" gave Him a victory we, too, can know
But because the wages of sin is death
Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane pleaded
For another way than death that would His heel bruise
But in the thrice-repeated submission
"Not my will, but Thine be done"
Christ offered us all the solution
As to how to face the most trying moments of this life that grows
Only in true self-surrender to all we can be and know
For only God has grace--true power
To restore a soul that by sin has shown
Its helplessness without the hand of love
To uplift it from the dregs of self-love that leads to death
And so Christ took upon Him even to His dying breath
The wages of all our transgression
And broke the power of the second death
Though at Calvary His broken heart was crying
Because sin caused the Father's face to be eclipsed in darkness
It was in dying, praying, submissively
"Into Thy hands I commit My Spirit"
That Jesus in death defeated Satan's lies over us
For God's great love would be forever without a question
And Satan was seen as the liar--the murderer--he really was
Thus our entire race was given probation
To make a choice as to whom we will serve
The story of the cross is daily reenacted
As in each life we get to choose
Whether with Christ to be crucified
Or in sinful pleasure His heart bruise
And our lives and that of others abuse
When Christ has the entire heart of His child
He makes it His abiding place
And from what once was a hold for sin, self and demons
Christ lives out the fruit of the Spirit--not one missing
As we are free to choose
To gladly obey the One who loved us
At infinite cost to Himself
And yet because He loves us
He will never force an entrance into our hearts
Because God is greater than our hearts
We need to learn to trust Him
And rely simply by faith
Knowing that His grace is sufficient
To save the entire human race
Thus the blood for us that at the cross was given
Is more powerful than whatever sin you may face
The key to victory in all the story
Is to remember
The story of the cross
To bring its beauty before the mind
That sin's transient unsatisfying pleasures
May pass from heart and mind
For in contemplation of the One who loves us
Love awakens in the heart
And in loving God we are free to unselfishly love others
The joy of salvation is spread around
Oh, that we would remember the precious love of Jesus
And talk of His merits all day long
For the grace that He gives us is much stronger
Than Satan's tricks and traps all set to ground
Us from ever rising higher
Than the poor lot of sin and self in this world
For Christ has an infinitely higher plan for us
All purchased by His blood
As revealed in the true story of the cross
And thus throughout eternal ages
That cross our science and our song
Will fill immortal minds with wonder
Of the God whose love is most clearly revealed
In the glory of the cross
For Jesus' assured death and resurrection
Gives us hope and strength for each new day
Remember that the love He lavished upon you
Freely given by His Spirit in ever fresh, new ways
Has the power to keep you from sin today
