Governer Frank Keating asked economists what one of the things holding back the economy of Oklahoma was, and was told it was his state's high divorce rate.
He was suprised when he looked at the number of divorces in the state (some counties had divorce outpacing marriage 2-1) and has started some initiatives to reduce the number of divorces.
Economic research has shown that a high divorce rate is directly tied to more poverty, teen drug abuse, and higher high school drop-out rates.
The state wants to make it harder to get a divorce and provide counseling to couples so they will be more careful about getting married in the first place.
