Sabbath Afternoon

Read for This Week’s Study: Daniel 3, Rev. 14:6-12, Ps. 78:1-17, John 4:7-26, 1 Chron. 16:1-36, Mark 7:1-13.

Memory Text: “Give unto the LORD the glory [due] unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.” 1 Chronicles 16:29

Worship is part of humanity, part of human nature, even fallen human nature. No question, we were created as beings who, out of the freedom given us by God, would worship the Lord because we love Him and know that He is worthy of worship. Such worship must have been pretty easy in a pre-Fall world, where humans had face-to-face access to God in a creation unmarred by sin, death, and destruction – a creation that we who know only a fallen world can barely imagine.

Today, of course, although the innate need to worship still exists in us, it, like everything else in this world, has been twisted and distorted by sin, which means that among other things we, as worshiping beings, can end up worshiping the wrong things, or even end up not worshiping the Lord in the way that He is supposed to be worshiped (see, for instance, Mark 7:1-13, Jer. 7:4).

Hence, because worship is so central to the Christian experience, Christian education must deal with the question of worship, the subject for this week’s lesson.

A question to ponder as we begin a new week of lessons on worship.  Can one who is not born again really worship God? If self remains alive then who would receive the glory in a false worship?  If one is unconverted and stands in the pulpit during worship, then who will be exalted, even if it appears to be Christ? It appears that we must be in a converted state to really worship the God who  created heaven and Earth. When Cain and Abel brought their offerings to worship God, was Cain really worshiping God? Did God accept Cain's offering? Why not?

Our memory verse speaks to the subject of worship. What are we to bring to worship? We are to give glory to God. What does this mean? It means to reflect His  character. It is part of the three angels messages, "Fear God and give glory to Him."

We are to bring an offering, but not as did Cain.

We are to worship God in the beauty of holiness. What does this mean? Just what it says. We are to come to worship God with a clean heart and the mind of Christ. Can one who is not in a converted state do this? We can come to church when in an unconverted state, but we cannot worship God in the beauty of holiness when the heart is not clean, but remains full of pride and self. We come to church to not only worship God, but many come to be converted by beholding Jesus. That is why it is so important for the speaker to keep Jesus at the center of the message.

Study this week’s lesson to prepare for Sabbath, November 14.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

We All Worship Something

There’s something in us – something, no doubt, that was originally woven in us by God but, as with everything else, became warped by sin – that longs to worship. Obviously, in the beginning we were to worship the only One worthy of worship, our Lord and Creator. But since the Fall, all this has changed, even greatly.

To each is given a measure of faith that we might believe the truth. But, we are evil by nature and are aligned with Satan and sin. We did not lose our intelligence, our ability to reason, and our knowledge of good and evil. As we come to see our condemnation, we by learning of God may see a way out of our evil ways. We may learn of God for He has provided a remedy for our sin sick souls.

But, yes, we all worship something, someone, whatever. This helps explain why all through human history, and even today, humans practice worship. In ancient Egypt, some people worshiped the pharaoh; at other times, in other lands, people worshiped statues of fish, multiheaded gods, and other supposed deities. Some people worshiped the sun, the moon, the stars.

And in doing so, some were so deceived about worship that they sacrificed their children.

Today, most people are too sophisticated to bow down before a statue of a frog (but, apparently, not a statue of Mary), yet this hardly means that humans, even secular humans, don’t worship something: money, power, sex, themselves, rock stars, actors, politicians. Whatever we love the most, whatever we focus most of our attention on, whatever we live for, that is what we worship. And, warned secular author David Foster Wallace, if you worship the wrong thing, it “will eat you alive.”

And what idols are popular today in the world and in the church?

What does the story in Daniel 3 teach us about the importance of true worship?

The three Jewish boys obviously took the second commandment (Exod. 20:4-6) as seriously as God had meant it to be taken. After all, it’s part of the Ten Commandments, right up there with prohibitions on murder and robbery and so forth. Worship, proper worship, is so important that, in fact, it becomes central to the issues in the last days, before the second coming of Christ. Thus, Christian education needs to include the whole question of worship: what is it, how do we do it, why is it important, and whom do we worship?

If we start at the beginning, we must see our condemnation so we will know we are sick and need of help from outside of ourselves, else we may remain deceived thinking we are fine the way we are. The three young men who refused to bow down to an idol were truly converted. The church remains in a Laodicean condition where must think they are really worshiping God when in fact they still worship idols. What are popular idols in our day?

Read Revelation 14:6-12. What do these texts teach us about how central the question of worship will be in the final crisis before Christ returns?

What do we mean by worship? How often are we to worship? How are we converted daily, as Paul said we must  "die daily" to self and sin. Many think that they are to worship on one day and that is sufficient. They do not have daily devotions and morning and evening worship on their homes. Do you? If not, why not?
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

And Declare Them to Their Children

The Psalms in the Old Testament eventually came to play a role in the religious life of ancient Israel. They were recited, sung, often with musical instruments, during times of worship, especially public worship, which in the Old Testament was key to how the people worshiped in general. Israel functioned as a community, and as a community, they worshiped together.

The Psalms are basically poems, the lyrics to songs. The Hebrew word for the Psalms, Tehillîm, means “songs of praise.” And when we sing praises to God, whatever else we are doing, we are worshiping the Lord.

Read Psalm 78:1-17. What is the essential message here, and how does it fit in with the whole question of education and worship?

There is a certain determination about the message of Psalm 78. In verse 2, Asaph mentions how we will share the “dark sayings of old.” The word “dark” does not mean “ominous” but, rather, dim or fading, as history can become when its crucial events go further and further back in time. In other translations, dark is referred to as “secret” (NLV) or “sweet old truths” (Message). The point here is that whatever else the education of Israel included, it included teaching the children the stories about the Lord’s dealing with the chosen nation.

How did God deal with a rebellious nation? How often was Israel in apostasy? Where did their apostasy end up? Why did the prophets warn them of their sins? Did God punish Israel and her leaders? Did God bless Israel? Why and when did He do both?

Look at Psalm 78:6-17. What were the specific lessons that they were to teach their children? What was the ultimate goal of this education?
'
How successful was Israel in teaching their children? How did Satan block the truth from reaching Israel? Why could not Jesus lead His disciples to see the Lamb of God must die? Even after spending three and a half years with them in person, why did Peter try to stop Jesus from going to His death? Were the child led astray? Have our children been led astray so that many leave the faith? Then why do so many leave the church? What is wrong with our worship of God?

Among the goals of education as seen in the texts is that the children would learn to trust in God and keep His commandments. How might a text like Revelation 14:12 reflect that same idea for us today?

14:12   Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

How is it that we might understand we are worshiping God in the right manner? What if our children are not patient and do not walk in the light given to us as a people? Has Satan been successful at deceiving us about idol worship? Do we think we are find when we do not walk in the light of His love and light? Many believe that when they sin a known sin that it does not reveal there is a serious problem in their lives? They have been taught in school and in church that we may sin a known sin and retain our salvation. How serious is this deception? Why does it continue to be preached from our pulpits and published on our presses? How does God fell about "another gospel" being taught in His church? What does Paul say? " 1:6   I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed." Galatians 1:6-9.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

In Spirit and in Truth

One of the most wonderful accounts in the New Testament of how Jesus ministered to broken souls is found in the story of Jesus and the woman at the well.

Read John 4:7-26. What does Jesus say to her about worship? In fact, how did they get on the topic of worship to begin with?

Though she tried to change the subject by talking about worship, Jesus used her tactic to give us some profound truths about worship and what worship involves. Perhaps most important for our immediate purposes is what He said in John 4:24: “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (NKJV).

True worship of the Lord must be “in spirit,” that is, it must stem from love of God, from the experience of knowing Him personally. “The religion that comes from God is the only religion that will lead to God. In order to serve Him aright, we must be born of the divine Spirit. This will purify the heart and renew the mind, giving us a new capacity for knowing and loving God. It will give us a willing obedience to all His requirements. This is true worship. It is the fruit of the working of the Holy Spirit.” — Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 189.

Amen!!! "In order to order to serve Him aright.....(to worship Him aright), we must be born of the divine Spirit."We must be converted, filled with the Spirit. We do not believe in once saved always saved, nor a version of it. If we have truly been born again and filled with the Spirit, it does not mean that the next day we are born again. If we take our eyes off of Jesus we have no protection against the smallest temptation to sin. We must be born again daily. I die daily. When the disciples walked out of the upper room the night before Jesus was murdered, they all were in a converted state except for Judas. But, that night they all sinned against God. Are you and I any different, that we can will not sin after being converted? Then, to learn the lessons we are studying this week, we must understand what we just read, we cannot worship God aright unless we are filled with the Holy Spirit and self is dead. Read more: "This will purify the heart and renew the mind..." Do you really believe this, that when we are truly in a converted state, the heart has been purified and mind is the mind of Christ, not a carnal mind?  Most in the church today do not believe this and few teach that we can have a pure and holy heart, that when converted our heart and motives are pure and holy. We will not obtain holy flesh until by God's grace we see Jesus as His soon coming. But, living in sinful flesh is not an excuse for sin. When we are truly in a converted state, we will not sin for the heart is pure and holy. When we are fully surrendered to Christ, then we have the perfection of character that comes with purity of heart and mind when our motives are pure and holy. Then and then only can we worship God aright.  Then, let us keep this Sabbath School lesson on point. All else is chaff if we do not understand the foundation of our faith.

Do not let this lesson go untaught in your Sabbath School this Sabbath.

At the same time, worship must be “in truth.” We must have some correct knowledge of God, of who He is and what He requires of us.

This goes without saying since we already were told that we must be truly converted. How can one be truly converted if they do not know God, he cannot.

In other words, doctrine is involved, as well. (How meaningful it is, for example, to know that we worship a God who does not burn people in hell for eternity.)

Thus, we see here two elements in worship: the experience that comes from knowing and obeying God, and the objective truths revealed to us about God. Spirit without truth can lead to a shallow sentimentalism that’s built more on fickle emotion than on anything else. In contrast, truth without spirit can lead to a lifeless formalism. Hence, we need both.

It is the office of the Spirit to reveal truth. We cannot know truth without the Spirit. In order to worship God aright we must be filled with the Spirit, then we will walk in the truth we know. God will then reveal the truth we need for this one day. But, if the truth is desired, then we must yield to God and give Him the whole heart before the Spirit will take possession and purify the heart and mind. This is the all important truth  we are to take away from this lesson. Teach it to your church, for without a correct understanding of what it means to be a true converted Christian, how can one worship God aright?

How would you seek to teach someone to worship “in spirit and truth”? In what cases might someone need an emphasis more on one than on the other?

The Holy Spirit and truth cannot be separated. We must be born again of the Spirit before we can worship God. Otherwise it is a great deception and this we see in many of our churches today. Let me quote a prophet regarding our church when she was in the church: "The minds of many are clouded with unbelief because those who unite with the church as the chosen of God do not reveal the virtues that are the fruits of the Spirit. Joining the church is not a sure evidence that a man has joined himself to Christ. The new birth is a rare experience in this age of the world. This is the reason why there are so many perplexities in the churches. Many, so many, who assume the name of Christ are unsanctified and unholy. They have been baptized, but they were buried alive. Self did not die, and therefore they did not rise to newness of life in Christ. 12MR 51.

Share this quote in the context of Tuesday's lesson in your Sabbath School. Do not be fearful, this is the truth God wants His church to know. And if a prophet's truth is not accepted then share the  Words of our Savior regarding the condition of the last of the seven churches in the Book of Revelation:

 3:14   And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
3:15   I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
3:16   So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
3:17   Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
3:18   I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
3:19   As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
3:20   Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
3:21   To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
3:22   He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

The Beauty of Holiness

Read 1 Chronicles 16:1-36. Try to picture the scene. Do you imagine it as solemn, fearful, or festive and joyous? In what way might it be a combination of both? What can we learn from this scene about worship and how we should teach and even experience worship?

The place of worship was the tabernacle, where God had dwelt with ancient Israel and where the plan of salvation had been revealed to them. Central, then, to worship and to worship education must be Jesus and the plan of salvation, all of which was foreshadowed in the tabernacle service. Whatever else God has done for us that deserves praise and worship, it all means nothing without the hope of eternal life offered to us by His sacrificial and substitutionary death on the cross.

Also notice the “evangelistic” thrust of the passage: all the world was to learn about the God of Israel.

Look at 1 Chronicles 16:29: “Give to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come before Him. Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness!” (NKJV). The beauty of holiness? What might that mean?

A most important question!  How can a person living in sinful flesh manifest "holiness"? Can we obtain holiness? If not then how can we worship God in the beauty of holiness? God does not ask of us something we cannot do.

For starters, think about how ugly, how damaging, how degrading, sin is. Also, it’s hard for us now to imagine just how evil, terrible, and degrading the worship practices of the nations around Israel were, practices that included, of all things, child sacrifices. And, no question, these things reflected what the people who practiced them were like.

In contrast, ancient Israel was to be a holy nation, separated from the evil customs around them. They were to be holy in their hearts and minds; this is what gave their worship meaning and beauty before God. Over and over the Old Testament prophets railed against people who worshiped the Lord while engaged in corruption and while their hearts were far from Him.

The question was not answered. Are we any different from them? No. Unless we obtain holiness of heart and mind, we are just like ancient Israel and the nations surrounding her. Israel was even worse because she was entrusted with the truth. So it is today.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

Idolatry in Education

Ancient Israel had been surrounded by very religious people, people so dedicated to worshiping and placating their gods that they would sacrifice even their own children to them. That’s dedication, is it not?

Even Israel sacrificed children as an act of worship, and today we see children of church members being sacrificed to Satan as they are taught a false gospel and allowed to be deceived about the character of true worship. The question must be answered as to how we can manifest the beauty of holiness, else our children will not be helped and will be sacrificed on the altar of fashion and games and false worship.

Hence, worship, true worship of the true God, was an important part of protecting the Hebrews from getting caught up in the idolatry and false worship surrounding them. And yet, despite all the warnings, they still fell into the idolatrous practices that they had been specifically warned against.

What about us today? Why would worship of the true God, recounting all that He has done for us, be so important, as well – especially in the face of the dangers of modern idolatry?

Indeed, then answer the question as to how we can be truly converted and reveal the beauty of holiness of heart and mind.

Read Mark 7:1-13. What principle do we find in verses 7-9 that could apply today in the context of Christian education and the danger of false teaching, taken from the world, that could negatively impact the practice of our faith?

Many of the great intellectual ideas in the world today are based on a naturalistic view of reality. Many disciplines studied in school today are studied from that perspective, which often means that what is taught will be contradictory to Scripture. We can be tempted to worship ideas that have been postulated, theorized, and put into practice. We can also deify the brilliant minds of the philosophers, scientists, and mathematicians who trademarked these ideas. The problem is that often these ideas can clash with Scripture, yet because they are now currently taught and believed to be true, people try to incorporate them into Christian education. However, the only way that can be done is to compromise the faith, which often means twisting and distorting the Scriptures in order to try to make Scripture fit with current ideas.

Then we must not continue to allow false worship based on false gospels to taught in our (God's) church.

What are some of the current popular beliefs that clash with Scripture, and how can we as a church protect ourselves from incorporating them into our own educational system?

The answer to these types of questions is always the same, we need to be truly converted, we need to reflect the character of Christ, else we are just as Ancient Israel and the nations that surrounded them. Where is the answer to how we can worship God in the beauty of holiness? We have one more day to hear the answer.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

Friday        November 13

Further Thought: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. Professors of religion are not willing to closely examine themselves to see whether they are in the faith, and it is a fearful fact that many are leaning on a false hope. Some lean upon an old experience they had years ago; but when brought down to this heart-searching time, when all should have a daily experience, they have nothing to relate. They seem to think a profession of the truth will save them. When those sins which God hates are subdued, Jesus will come in and sup with you and you with him. You will then draw divine strength from Jesus, and you will grow up in him, and be able with holy triumph to say, Blessed be God who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. It would be more pleasing to the Lord if lukewarm professors of religion had never named his name. They are a continual weight to those who would be faithful followers of Jesus. They are a stumbling-block to unbelievers, and evil angels exult over them, and taunt the angels of God with their crooked course. Such are a curse to the cause at home or abroad. They draw nigh to God with their lips, while their heart is far from him.” — Ellen G. White, Spiritual Gifts, vol. 2, p. 227.

Amen! This is a pretty strong rebuke to those in the church who are unconverted. But, the answer to how we can be holy is still not answered, so many are left without hope, at least from our lessons in Sabbath School.

Discussion Questions:

From Mark 7:1-13, we learned that the underlying condition of false worship is a heart problem.

7:1   Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.
7:2   And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.
7:3   For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash [their] hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
7:4   And [when they come] from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, [as] the washing of cups, and pots, brazen vessels, and of tables.
7:5   Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
7:6   He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with [their] lips, but their heart is far from me.
7:7   Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching [for] doctrines the commandments of men.
7:8   For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, [as] the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
7:9   And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
7:10   For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:
7:11   But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, [It is] Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; [he shall be free].
 7:12   And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
7:13   Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

God does not regard worship with our lips if this worship is not springing forth from our hearts. Why is the gospel and the story of the death of Jesus in our behalf the most powerful way to open up hearts to truly love God?

It is the most powerful way unless the gospel has been perverted, which it has. In God's church today we hear multitudes of gospels without any condemnation of those who do so. Thus we can say what has been said and not make one bit of difference when we do not address the true and the false gospels in the church today. The question remains as to how we can be holy living in fallen evil flesh. Unless we address this and the false gospels with the true gospel, we will not be able to see revival and reformation in the church.

Dwell more on the idea of worshiping God “in spirit and in truth.” Is it possible to do one and not the other, or does true worship demand both? If so, why?

Yes, our hearts need to be right in order to truly worship God, but what does that mean? Do you have to wait until you are totally connected to the Lord, with your life in perfect order, before you can worship? On the other hand, how can worship, true worship, help get your heart in the right place with God?

Can one be holy when not totally connected to God? Absolutely not.  "How can worship, true worship, help get your heart in the right place with God" reveals that there is a serious problem here. We are being told that we can worship God when the heart is not right with God, it will help get your heart right with God. This is a contradiction.  We cannot worship God, truly worship God unless our hearts are right. Thus, the question remains, how can we get our hearts right so that we can worship God in the beauty of holiness which is the only true worship of God.

Go back and study Tuesday's lesson and see that our lesson on Friday is not in harmony with the truth revealed on Tuesday. God help His church to learn how to come to the point of worshiping Him properly. In other words, in the beauty of holiness. We must be in a converted state to worship God, else we are serving self and Satan. But, this does not mean that God does not love us and is calling us to let Him into our hearts. He stands at the door and knocks seeking entrance. And, in the Laodicean message we read as to how can be converted and manifest the beauty of a pure and holy heart and mind. Buy of Him gold tried in the fire, white raiment, and eye salve which will then empower us to overcome sin as Jesus overcame. He is speaking to His church today, "repent."
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

How can a person living in sinful flesh manifest "holiness"?

We may have Jesus Christ as our power to cease to sin, in mortal flesh."
"Receiving Christ, we are clothed with power. An indwelling Saviour makes His power our property." 7T 71

“Christ declared that after His ascension, He would send to His church, as His crowning gift, the Comforter, who was to take His place. This Comforter is the Holy Spirit—the soul of His life, the efficacy of His church, the light and life of the world. With His Spirit, Christ sends a reconciling influence and a power to take away sin.” Lt 155, 1902 (September 5, 1902) par. 15

"In giving His commission to His followers, Christ did not tell them they would be left alone. He assured them that He would be near them. He spoke of His Omnipresence in a special way. Go to all nations, He said. Go, to the farthest portion of the habitable globe, but know that My presence will be there. Labor in faith and confidence, for the time will never come when I shall forsake you. The assurance of His abiding presence was the richest legacy Christ could give His disciples. Having the High Priest of our profession close by our side, we need not imperil our souls by opening the secrets of our hearts to priest or minister. In all confidence we may open our heart to the head over all the church. Take every matter, small or great to Jesus. “Come unto me,” He says, “all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] Precious assurance. Let us show that we honor the invitation by obeying the call."
Ms 138, 1897 (December 2, 1897) par. 21

1 Corinthians 4:
10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.
12 So then death worketh in us, but life in [those who have ears to hear the call to LIFE].

"We [Christ in you: Galatians 2:20] are to preach the word of life to those whom we may judge to be as hopeless subjects as though they were in their graves.

Though they may seem unwilling to hear or to receive the light of truth, without questioning or wavering we are to do our part. We are to repeat to them the message. “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.”

It is not the human agent that is to inspire with life. The Lord God of Israel will do that part, quickening the lifeless spiritual nature into activity. The breath of the Lord of hosts must enter into the lifeless bodies."

Even Israel sacrificed children as an act of worship, and today we see children of church members being sacrificed to Satan as they are taught a false gospel and allowed to be deceived about the character of true worship.

Masses relish viewing movies of the walking dead; truth be told, those who are enjoying the pleasures of sin for a season ARE dead, according to God; more than that, those professing Christ yet continuing in sin are, for themselves, aborting "that Seed" [Galatians 3:16; 1 John 3:9; Hebrews 6:6], the privilege of "Christ in them" their only "hope of glory", stifling the possibility of their influence leading others to Christ.

The strongest bulwark of vice in our world is not the iniquitous life of the abandoned sinner or the degraded outcast; it is that life which otherwise appears virtuous, honorable, and noble, but in which one sin is fostered, one vice indulged. To the soul that is struggling in secret against some giant temptation, trembling upon the very verge of the precipice, such an example is one of the most powerful enticements to sin. He who, endowed with high conceptions of life and truth and honor, does yet willfully transgress one precept of God's holy law, has perverted His noble gifts into a lure to sin. Genius, talent, sympathy, even generous and kindly deeds, may become decoys of Satan to entice other souls over the precipice of ruin for this life and the life to come.
Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing 95

Philippians 1:
15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:
16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction...

1 Timothy 5
6 ...she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth

Romans 6
23 For the wages of sin is death

God gives us our "wages" each day; it's our choice what we "sow".

Genesis 6
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

God IS just, requiring His children to be just, as He is just.

John 7
24 ...judge righteous judgment.

Deuteronomy 24
14 Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates:
15 At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.

1 John 2
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

The words "even until now" speak to me of the hope that is mine in repentance

10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

(1 John 2:11 and 1 John 3:14 define spiritual darkness as spiritual death, with a conviction of Eternal death.)

1 John 3
14 ...He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

Ephesians 5
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

Psalm 100
5 ...the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

James 4
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Romans 6
11 ...reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
