That prayer of Christ for His enemies embraced the world. It took in every sinner that had lived or should live, from the beginning of the world to the end of time. Upon all rests the guilt of crucifying the Son of God. To all, forgiveness is freely offered. "Whosoever will" may have peace with God, and inherit eternal life.

There is the danger of presumption but here is a wonderful look at our Savior. Always ready to forgive even while we are mistreating Him. His mercies are new every morning.

I agree Dorine, this chapter should not be read quickly. If you do, you will loose much.
By communion with God in nature, the mind is uplifted, and the heart finds rest.  {DA 291.1}

Amen my dear brothers and sister! Many do not read, and those who do often do not understand what they have read. Many believe and teach that it is the death of Jesus that saves sinners. It is true, but not in the manner which they understand. It is not the death of Jesus that transforms sinners into saints. It is His grace that saves repentant sinners. It is not when Jesus goes to sleep. It is what He did before He goes to sleep in the tomb. It is what Jesus did before He cried out "It is finished." It is the wrath of God which He endured that breaks the heart of the sinner. He was made sin for us. It is by beholding what Jesus did before He died that we need to do in order to be saved. It would be well to spend a thoughtful hour a day contemplating the life of Jesus, especially the closing scenes where we see Him suffering to pay the price for our salvation. As our Sister Dorine has shared, we need to comprehend what we are reading today.

     This was the only thing that attracted Christ's attention. Although full of suffering, while bearing the sins of the world, He was not indifferent to the expression of grief. He looked upon these women with tender compassion. They were not believers in Him; He knew that they were not lamenting Him as one sent from God, but were moved by feelings of human pity. He did not despise their sympathy, but it awakened in His heart a deeper sympathy for them. "Daughters of Jerusalem," He said, "weep not for Me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children." From the scene before Him, Christ looked forward to the time of Jerusalem's destruction. In that terrible scene, many of those who were now weeping for Him were to perish with their children.
     From the fall of Jerusalem the thoughts of Jesus passed to a wider judgment. In the destruction of the impenitent city He saw a symbol of the final destruction to come upon the world. He said, "Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?" By the green tree, Jesus represented Himself, the innocent Redeemer. God suffered His wrath against transgression to fall on His beloved Son. Jesus was to be crucified for the sins of men. What suffering, then, would the sinner bear who continued in sin? All the impenitent and unbelieving would know a sorrow and misery that language would fail to express.

Yes, what suffering will the sinner bear if he does not repent? Dying will not be enough. All unrepentant sinners will die at least twice. Why are the sinners brought up out of the grave after the thousand years? There are some who have died after murdering many. But they did not pay the price for their sins when executed. They will come forth from the grave for what reason? The Bible tells us why, but even among those who know that Satan will suffer the longest do not comprehend that the murderer will have to suffer before they die the second death just as Jesus had to suffer before He died. It was the pain He suffered that saves us. Grace that saves is knowing how much God loves us. When Jesus died all heaven rejoiced. He then rested in the tomb. It was finished before He physically died. He paid the price for our sins by how much He suffered. The sinners must pay the price for each and every sin. It is not good enough that they die. If that were true, then they need not come forth from the grave. It is true that every tongue will confess Jesus was right, but that is not the paying the price for their sins. "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad." 2 Cor. 5:10.

What are the "things done in the body" that the sinner may receive?  They are the sins that are bad that must be paid for. Jesus paid for those sins, but here we read that  there is a judgment that will be had for the bad ones. It is not being laid to rest forever. No, justice demands that there be punishment for sins. Yes, Jesus was punished for everyone's sins. But, the unrepentant sinner did not accept this offer. Thus, the unrepentant sinner must suffer for each and every sin. "And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."  Rev 20:11-15.

Many today who ought to know better do not understand how much Jesus had to suffer because they do not understand how much the unrepentant sinners will suffer before they die their second death. It is very important that all know how much the sinners must suffer that they know how much Jesus suffered before He died.

Satan rushes into the midst of his followers and tries to stir up the multitude to action. But fire from God out of heaven is rained upon them, and the great men, and mighty men, the noble, the poor and miserable, are all consumed together. I saw that some were quickly destroyed, while others suffered longer. They were punished according to the deeds done in the body. Some were many days consuming, and just as long as there was a portion of them unconsumed, all the sense of suffering remained. Said the angel, “The worm of life shall not die; their fire shall not be quenched as long as there is the least particle for it to prey upon.”

Satan and his angels suffered long. Satan bore not only the weight and punishment of his own sins, but also of the sins of the redeemed host, which had been placed upon him; and he must also suffer for the ruin of souls which he had caused. Then I saw that Satan and all the wicked host were consumed, and the justice of God was satisfied; and all the angelic host, and all the redeemed saints, with a loud voice said, “Amen!”

Said the angel, “Satan is the root, his children are the branches. They are now consumed root and branch. They have died an everlasting death. They are never to have a resurrection, and God will have a clean universe.” I then looked and saw the fire which had consumed the wicked, burning up the rubbish and purifying the earth. Again I looked and saw the earth purified. There was not a single sign of the curse. The broken, uneven surface of the earth now looked like a level, extensive plain. God’s entire universe was clean, and the great controversy was forever ended. Wherever we looked, everything upon which the eye rested was beautiful and holy. And all the redeemed host, old and young, great and small, cast their glittering crowns at the feet of their Redeemer, and prostrated themselves in adoration before Him, and worshiped Him that liveth forever and ever. The beautiful new earth, with all its glory, was the eternal inheritance of the saints. The kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, was then given to the saints of the Most High, who were to possess it forever, even forever and ever.  Early Writings, pg 294-5.

There are multitudes of pastors and their wives who will not accept the truth that Jesus does indeed destroy. God destroyed every living thing off the face of the Earth except for the eight who survived on the ark. It was not Satan who did this, he feared for his own life during the flood. Therefore, these teachers have influenced a multitude of church members that Jesus would not punish the sinner. God takes no pleasure in the suffering and death of the wicked. It is a strange act for God to punish those whom He created and loved. "For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, He shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that He may do His work, His strange work; and bring to pass His act, His strange act." Isaiah 28:21. Justice is just as important as is mercy in the government of God.

It is our joy to be able to correct the lie that God is going to burn sinners for ever who reject God's offer of mercy. God is fair. He is not going to burn sinners in hell for eternity. The unrepentant sinner will pay the price for each and every sin, not one jot less or more. It would not be fair to sinners today to not tell the what is in store if they do not repent. They need to know for their own good how much they will suffer and how much Jesus loves them by taking their punishment upon Himself. Let me close with a Bible truth regarding  our responsibility in dealing with those we have influence with. "But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen." Jude 18-25.

Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

======================

1
Amazing grace! how sweet the sound,
  That saved a wretch; like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
  Was blind, but now I see.
2
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
  And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
  The hour I first believed!
3
The Lord hath promised good to me,
  His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
  As long as life endures.
4
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
  Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
  Than when we first begun.

Simon had heard of Jesus. His sons were believers in the Saviour, but he himself was not a disciple. The bearing of the cross to Calvary was a blessing to Simon, and he was ever after grateful for this providence. It led him to take upon himself the cross of Christ from choice, and ever cheerfully stand beneath its burden.

Interesting to read the experience of Simon. What was meant to be an embarrassment was a blessing to Simon.

Amen, Brother Beacon and Brother Jim!

Christ offers us His all-sufficient salvation. His selfless ministry is a profound marvel to the onlooking universe. His sacrifice is essential for us. As we yield fully to Him, all of the fruits of the Spirit will be revealed in our lives without one missing. Oh, let us walk in harmony with Christ's character whose power to save to the uttermost has never been diminished. Believe more fully, pray more fervently, and trust Christ unreservedly so you can be all He calls you to be!

"With amazement the angels beheld the infinite love of Jesus, who, suffering the most intense agony of mind and body, thought only of others, and encouraged the penitent soul to believe. In His humiliation He as a prophet had addressed the daughters of Jerusalem; as priest and advocate He had pleaded with the Father to forgive His murderers; as a loving Saviour He had forgiven the sins of the penitent thief." {The Desire of Ages, page 752, paragraph 1}

When we are moved by the love of Christ, our hearts become changed by His infinite love. The miracle of God's converting grace can change sinners into saints that are kept by the Holy Spirit from falling back into sin that hurts the heart of God.
"When we live by faith on the Son of God, the fruits of the Spirit will be seen in our lives; not one will be missing." {The Desire of Ages, 676.4}

Amen my dear brothers!!  When we behold Jesus suffering on the cross, we now understand why Jesus told Nicodemus "as Moses lifted up the Serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up."  It is by looking upon our Savior's bleeding back, His great suffering, our hearts are broken. Here is the grace by which we are transformed from sinners to saints. Sadly, we are by nature so evil we need to die to self every day.

     The spotless Son of God hung upon the cross, His flesh lacerated with stripes; those hands so often reached out in blessing, nailed to the wooden bars; those feet so tireless on ministries of love, spiked to the tree; that royal head pierced by the crown of thorns; those quivering lips shaped to the cry of woe. And all that He endured--the blood drops that flowed from His head, His hands, His feet, the agony that racked His frame, and the unutterable anguish that filled His soul at the hiding of His Father's face--speaks to each child of humanity, declaring, It is for thee that the Son of God consents to bear this burden of guilt; for thee He spoils the domain of death, and opens the gates of Paradise. He who stilled the angry waves and walked the foam-capped billows, who made devils tremble and disease flee, who opened blind eyes and called forth the dead to life,--offers Himself upon the cross as a sacrifice, and this from love to thee.
He, the Sin Bearer, endures the wrath of divine justice, and for thy sake becomes sin itself.

Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

    As He spoke the words of promise, the dark cloud that seemed to enshroud the cross was pierced by a bright and living light. To the penitent thief came the perfect peace of acceptance with God. Christ in His humiliation was glorified. He who in all other eyes appeared to be conquered was a Conqueror. He was acknowledged as the Sin Bearer. Men may exercise power over His human body. They may pierce the holy temples with the crown of thorns. They may strip from Him His raiment, and quarrel over its division. But they cannot rob Him of His power to forgive sins. In dying He bears testimony to His own divinity and to the glory of the Father. His ear is not heavy that it cannot hear, neither His arm shortened that it cannot save. It is His royal right to save unto the uttermost all who come unto God by Him.

    Jesus through His words to the thief on the cross who asked for forgiveness in given perfect peace from Jesus promise to him - Oh, the love of God shining through the darkness. Nothing could take away Jesus' ability to forgive sins then, nor can it today. Jesus would have that all may be saved. All the pain, humiliation put upon just bore witness to His divinity. The love of Christ on a sinful world.  Jesus will save all who come to him in faith.

=================================

1
Praise Him! praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
  Sing, ye saints! His wonderful love proclaim!
Hail Him! hail Him! mightiest angels in glory;
  Strength and honor give to His holy name!
Like a shepherd, Jesus will feed His people,
  In His arms He carries them all day long;
O ye saints that live in the light of His presence,
  Praise Him! praise Him! ever in joyful song!
2
Praise Him! praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer,
  For our sins He suffered and bled and died;
He, our Rock, our Hope of eternal salvation,
  Hail Him! hail Him! Jesus, the Crucified;
Loving Savior, meekly enduring sorrow,
  Crowned with thorns that cruelly pierced His brow;
Once for us rejected, despised, and forsaken,
  Prince of Glory, ever triumphant now.
3
Praise Him! praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer,
  Heavenly portals, loud with hosannahs ring!
Jesus, Savior, reigneth for ever and ever;
  Crown Him! crown Him! Prophet and Priest and King!
Death is vanquished! Tell it with joy, ye faithful,
  Where is now thy victory, boasting grave?
Jesus lives! No longer thy portals are cheerless;
  Jesus lives, the mighty and strong to save.

   In that thick darkness God's presence was hidden. He makes darkness His pavilion, and conceals His glory from human eyes. God and His holy angels were beside the cross. The Father was with His Son. Yet His presence was not revealed. Had His glory flashed forth from the cloud, every human beholder would have been destroyed. And in that dreadful hour Christ was not to be comforted with the Father's presence. He trod the wine press alone, and of the people there was none with Him.

I don't ever remember reading this before. The thick darkness was necessary because God and the angels were with Jesus as he hung in agony on the cross. Just as Jesus didn't know that His Father was right beside Him there are times in our lives when darkness surrounds us and there is danger of us wondering where God is. Let us remember this scene at Calvary. It will bring comfort to our lonely, suffering souls.
But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press  toward the mark. Phil. 3:13,14

Amen dear sister. Jesus was paying the price for the sins of the whole world.
    Satan with his fierce temptations wrung the heart of Jesus. The Saviour could not see through the portals of the tomb. Hope did not present to Him His coming forth from the grave a conqueror, or tell Him of the Father's acceptance of the sacrifice. He feared that sin was so offensive to God that Their separation was to be eternal. Christ felt the anguish which the sinner will feel when mercy shall no longer plead for the guilty race. It was the sense of sin, bringing the Father's wrath upon Him as man's substitute, that made the cup He drank so bitter, and broke the heart of the Son of God.

Here we understand how Jesus suffered for us.  But, what of our heavenly father's love? Imagine how He felt as He watched His innocent Son suffer.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

What wonderful assurance is promised to each one of us who willing surrender to Jesus!!

1
All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.

I surrender all,
  I surrender all.
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
    I surrender all.
2
All to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow,
Worldly pleasures all forsaken;
Take me, Jesus, take me now.
3
All to Jesus I surrender,
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel Thy Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine.
4
All to Jesus I surrender,
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing fall on me.
5
All to Jesus I surrender,
Now I feel the sacred flame.
Oh, the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory to His name!

Amid the awful darkness, apparently forsaken of God, Christ had drained the last dregs in the cup of human woe. In those dreadful hours He had relied upon the evidence of His Father's acceptance heretofore given Him. He was acquainted with the character of His Father; He understood His justice, His mercy, and His great love. By faith He rested in Him whom it had ever been His joy to obey. And as in submission He committed Himself to God, the sense of the loss of His Father's favor was withdrawn. By faith, Christ was victor.

This paragraph spoke so plainly to me this morning. Jesus knew His Father so well that nothing could shake His faith in Him. We too can be victors in the same way Jesus was. He was our example that we must cling to if we plan to live with Him throughout eternity. Feelings are not safe to go by. It must always be by trusting and obeying the word of God.
But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press  toward the mark. Phil. 3:13,14

Amen dear Sister Dorine. Jesus understood not just His Father love and mercy, but His justice also. Thus, He understood why He was suffering. He became sin itself that we might be transformed into His likeness.  Amen Brother Beacon! Jesus was indeed our sin bearer. He suffered for each and ever sin of every human would ever live.

     Arriving at the place of execution, the prisoners were bound to the instruments of torture. The two thieves wrestled in the hands of those who placed them on the cross; but Jesus made no resistance. The mother of Jesus, supported by John the beloved disciple, had followed the steps of her Son to Calvary. She had seen Him fainting under the burden of the cross, and had longed to place a supporting hand beneath His wounded head, and to bathe that brow which had once been pillowed upon her bosom. But she was not permitted this mournful privilege. With the disciples she still cherished the hope that Jesus would manifest His power, and deliver Himself from His enemies. Again her heart would sink as she recalled the words in which He had foretold the very scenes that were then taking place. As the thieves were bound to the cross, she looked on with agonizing suspense. Would He who had given life to the dead suffer Himself to be crucified? Would the Son of God suffer Himself to be thus cruelly slain? Must she give up her faith that Jesus was the Messiah? Must she witness His shame and sorrow, without even the privilege of ministering to Him in His distress? She saw His hands stretched upon the cross; the hammer and the nails were brought, and as the spikes were driven through the tender flesh, the heart-stricken disciples bore away from the cruel scene the fainting form of the mother of Jesus.

So many lessons in this wonderful revelation of the character of our God!  Is it  not most amazing that even the mother of Jesus questioned that Jesus was the Messiah? How could this be?  It is the result of false teaching. Like the disciples she had been taught by false teachers that Jesus was going to rule from an earthly throne! As it was then, so it is today. False teachers preaching false gospels have led even God's church to be in a Laodicean condition.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

     Never before had the earth witnessed such a scene. The multitude stood paralyzed, and with bated breath gazed upon the Saviour. Again darkness settled upon the earth, and a hoarse rumbling, like heavy thunder, was heard. There was a violent earthquake. The people were shaken together in heaps. The wildest confusion and consternation ensued. In the surrounding mountains, rocks were rent asunder, and went crashing down into the plains. Sepulchers were broken open, and the dead were cast out of their tombs. Creation seemed to be shivering to atoms. Priests, rulers, soldiers, executioners, and people, mute with terror, lay prostrate upon the ground.
     When the loud cry, "It is finished," came from the lips of Christ, the priests were officiating in the temple. It was the hour of the evening sacrifice. The lamb representing Christ had been brought to be slain. Clothed in his significant and beautiful dress, the priest stood with lifted knife, as did Abraham when he was about to slay his son. With intense interest the people were looking on. But the earth trembles and quakes; for the Lord Himself draws near. With a rending noise the inner veil of the temple is torn from top to bottom by an unseen hand, throwing open to the gaze of the multitude a place once filled with the presence of God. In this place the Shekinah had dwelt. Here God had manifested His glory above the mercy seat. No one but the high priest ever lifted the veil separating this apartment from the rest of the temple. He entered in once a year to make an atonement for the sins of the people. But lo, this veil is rent in twain. The most holy place of the earthly sanctuary is no longer sacred.

What beautiful truth, that God loves us and allowed His Son to become sin itself that we might have the opportunity to be transformed from sinner to saint. Let us give honor and glory to  our heavenly Father and His Son and the Holy Spirit on this beautiful Sabbath Day.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

"Amid the awful darkness, apparently forsaken of God, Christ had drained the last dregs in the cup of human woe."

"In those dreadful hours He had relied upon the evidence of His Father's acceptance heretofore given Him."

"He was acquainted with the character of His Father; He understood His justice, His mercy, and His great love."

"By faith He rested in Him whom it had ever been His joy to obey. And as in submission He committed Himself to God, the sense of the loss of His Father's favor was withdrawn.
"

"By faith, Christ was victor."

Do "WE"  have this same amount of Faith?

"Christ imbues men with the attributes of God."

"He builds up the human character after the similitude of the divine character, a goodly fabric of spiritual strength and beauty."

"Thus the very righteousness of the law is fulfilled in the believer in Christ. God can "be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus." Romans 3:26."

"God's love has been expressed in His justice no less than in His mercy. Justice is the foundation of His throne, and the fruit of His love."

"It had been Satan's purpose to divorce mercy from truth and justice. He sought to prove that the righteousness of God's law is an enemy to peace."

"But Christ shows that in God's plan they are indissolubly joined together; the one cannot exist without the other."

"Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other." Psalm 85:10."

How thankful "WE" should be when we understand the Length and Breath of God's Forgiveness and Love. Lets renew Our commitment to Jesus every day and share His Love with others!!

====================

All to Jesus I surrender,
1All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.

I surrender all,
  I surrender all.
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
    I surrender all.
2
All to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow,
Worldly pleasures all forsaken;
Take me, Jesus, take me now.
3
All to Jesus I surrender,
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel Thy Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine.
4
All to Jesus I surrender,
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing fall on me.
5
All to Jesus I surrender,
Now I feel the sacred flame.
Oh, the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory to His name!

  In another prophecy the Saviour declared, "Reproach hath broken My heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. They gave Me also gall for My meat; and in My thirst they gave Me vinegar to drink." Psalm 69:20, 21. To those who suffered death by the cross, it was permitted to give a stupefying potion, to deaden the sense of pain. This was offered to Jesus; but when He had tasted it, He refused it. He would receive nothing that could becloud His mind. His faith must keep fast hold upon God. This was His only strength. To becloud His senses would give Satan an advantage.

On the one hand this chapter is so hard to read but on the other hand it brings such promise of a loving, merciful Saviour that is pouring out His life in agony for you and me so that by accepting His sacrifice we may be saved. I choose to focus on that for my humanity may sympathize with His cruel treatment out of the wrong motive.

The thought for today that caught my attention was what is said about Him refusing to accept anything that would deaden His pain for it would also deaden His senses and give Satan an advantage over Him. Then I thought how quick we are to run to the Dr. for things to dull our senses because we feel it is too much to bear. I have suffered much unbearable pain in my life time as I know some of you have too. What a relief it was to be given some drug to dull the misery. Was my pain more severe than Christ's? He died in His humanity with no help from heaven feeling the full force of every torturous gesture done to Him. No my pain has been nothing compared to His but it's even worse than that. He died the second death that you and I will never have to die as long as we stay true to Him. It was the separation from His Father that broke His heart to the extend He hardly felt the physical pain. May our hearts be broken this morning as we again give our hearts to Him.

The music was beautiful. Thank you for posting it. I put it on loop as I read through the chapter. It's one of my favorite songs sung in a sweet, clear voice.

The Saviour made no murmur of complaint. His face remained calm and serene, but great drops of sweat stood upon His brow. There was no pitying hand to wipe the death dew from His face, nor words of sympathy and unchanging fidelity to stay His human heart. While the soldiers were doing their fearful work, Jesus prayed for His enemies, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." His mind passed from His own suffering to the sin of His persecutors, and the terrible retribution that would be theirs. No curses were called down upon the soldiers who were handling Him so roughly. No vengeance was invoked upon the priests and rulers, who were gloating over the accomplishment of their purpose. Christ pitied them in their ignorance and guilt. He breathed only a plea for their forgiveness,--"for they know not what they do."

What a beautiful example for us. I try to picture this scene and how I would be if in the place of Jesus. He did not suffer less because He was the Son of God. In fact His suffering was much greater than anything we will ever have to face. His heart was full of pity for those who were roughly treating him. We have so much to learn from the life of Jesus that will protect us from the temptations of Satan. Instead of feeling sorry for ourselves because we are unfairly treated look to Calvary and our hearts will melt and we will be filled with love for God and our enemies.

Amen sister Dorine!

The bystanders caught the words as the thief called Jesus Lord. The tone of the repentant man arrested their attention. Those who at the foot of the cross had been quarreling over Christ's garments, and casting lots upon His vesture, stopped to listen. Their angry tones were hushed. With bated breath they looked upon Christ, and waited for the response from those dying lips.

To me this is telling. She said the tone of his voice is what arrested their attention not the words. There is a change in us as the Holy Spirit works on the heart.
By communion with God in nature, the mind is uplifted, and the heart finds rest.  {DA 291.1}

Amen dear Brother Jim. At first I thought you were referring to the voice of Jesus, but no it was the voice of the thief. It was his tone that caught their attention. There was a great interest in what Jesus was going to say because of the tone of the thief's voice. The Holy Spirit was indeed working on the heart of the thief, but it appears you are saying those who were waiting for a response were the ones on whom the Spirit was working?  In contemplating what you meant, it would seem that the tone of the thief's voice would indicate he and the bystander's hearts were all being moved by the work of the Holy Spirit on the hearts of all who witnessed the cruel treatment of Jesus and His response of love, of grace for those who do not deserve it.

Our dear Sister Dorine amid her suffering experiences the grace of Jesus Christ as she clearly points us to the bruised body of Jesus knowing it is His stripes that heal our sin sick souls. And our dear Brother Beacon also points us to His grace seen on the cross at Calvary:

There will never be a stronger demonstration of God's Love than the one given at Calvary. My prayer today is that my life may reflect with total surrender & gratitude a willingness to Trust & Obey my Lord and Saviour and be found working in His vineyard to help others find and accept His offer of Grace, Forgiveness and to walk on the pathway way to Heaven and the New Earth. Will You join me?

     The dying thieves have no longer anything to fear from man. But upon one of them presses the conviction that there is a God to fear, a future to cause him to tremble. And now, all sin-polluted as it is, his life history is about to close. "And we indeed justly," he moans; "for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this Man hath done nothing amiss."
     There is no question now. There are no doubts, no reproaches. When condemned for his crime, the thief had become hopeless and despairing; but strange, tender thoughts now spring up. He calls to mind all he has heard of Jesus, how He has healed the sick and pardoned sin. He has heard the words of those who believed in Jesus and followed Him weeping. He has seen and read the title above the Saviour's head. He has heard the passers-by repeat it, some with grieved, quivering lips, others with jesting and mockery. The Holy Spirit illuminates his mind, and little by little the chain of evidence is joined together. In Jesus, bruised, mocked, and hanging upon the cross, he sees the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world. Hope is mingled with anguish in his voice as the helpless, dying soul casts himself upon a dying Saviour. "Lord, remember me," he cries, "when Thou comest into Thy kingdom."
     Quickly the answer came. Soft and melodious the tone, full of love, compassion, and power the words: Verily I say unto thee today, Thou shalt be with Me in paradise.
     For long hours of agony, reviling and mockery have fallen upon the ears of Jesus. As He hangs upon the cross, there floats up to Him still the sound of jeers and curses. With longing heart He has listened for some expression of faith from His disciples. He has heard only the mournful words, "We trusted that it had been He which should have redeemed Israel." How grateful then to the Saviour was the utterance of faith and love from the dying thief! While the leading Jews deny Him, and even the disciples doubt His divinity, the poor thief, upon the brink of eternity, calls Jesus Lord. Many were ready to call Him Lord when He wrought miracles, and after He had risen from the grave; but none acknowledged Him as He hung dying upon the cross save the penitent thief who was saved at the eleventh hour.

How rotten is the fallen nature of man! Even the disciples and His mother questioned if Jesus was their Messiah as He hung on the cross. This is the result of false teaching. The sin and ruin of a nation was due to their religious leaders. This is why the Apostle Paul said "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed." Gal. 1:8,9.

When one teaches that a unrepentant sinner is saved, has eternal life, he or she is accursed. The Bible clearly teaches that Satan's lie in the garden continues to be a lie. When one sins, goes contrary to what God has told us to do as did Eve when she ate from the forbidden fruit, they will surely die. But the great lie by which Satan deceived Eve and Israel and now deceives professing Christianity is that when one sins he or she shall surely not die. Even in His church today we find many believe and teach that when one sins a known sin he shall surely not die, but continues to have spiritual life. God says through John that when one is born again of the Spirit, he does not sin, he cannot sin (1 John 3:9).  "He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother."  1 John 3:8-10. "Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His." Romans 8:7-9.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.
