As I reflect upon the love of Jesus towards us as His children, and towards the children whom He is drawing, my prayer is that His experience will be ours by a living-faith surrender bringing continuous union and communion with Christ, that we may hunger for souls as He did, and share the loveliness of Jesus with them!

"The Saviour regards with infinite tenderness the souls whom He has purchased with His own blood. They are the claim of His love. He looks upon them with unutterable longing. His heart is drawn out, not only to the best-behaved children, but to those who have by inheritance objectionable traits of character. Many parents do not understand how much they are responsible for these traits in their children. They have not the tenderness and wisdom to deal with the erring ones whom they have made what they are. But Jesus looks upon these children with pity. He traces from cause to effect." {The Desire of Ages, page 517, paragraph 5}

We do not know the circumstances of each person we meet--what has hurt them in the past, or why they are struggling with certain habits and struggles today. But we know that Jesus understands, and we desire to have a kind, pitiful heart towards them in how we seek to save the lost. As long as we abide in Christ we will have all of the fruits of the Spirit in our lives without one missing, and we will be given diving grace to minister to others. What a privilege!
"When we live by faith on the Son of God, the fruits of the Spirit will be seen in our lives; not one will be missing." {The Desire of Ages, 676.4}

This same paragraph spoke to me also Pastor Sean. It's very easy to ignore the misbehaved ones and some are very unlikeable but that is very wrong. They need more gentle loving attention than do the behaved ones. Here is another one that stood out to me. As a mother when the children were small this was my ultimate goal in all my interactions with them......

"As the mother teaches her children to obey her because they love her, she is teaching them the first lessons in the Christian life. The mother's love represents to the child the love of Christ, and the little ones who trust and obey their mother are learning to trust and obey the Saviour."

This was my deepest desire as a Mother. Learning when and how to apply justice and mercy to our children is not easy. It takes much prayer.  There were many times I learned from my children what it means to be "like Jesus".  I remember one day in particular I was having a difficult time getting my oldest daughter off to school. I don't remember what the issues were but I raised my voice to her as she went out the door. Through out that day I was tormented. What if I never saw her again and that parting would be the last memory I would have. As I tucked her into bed that night I apologized to her and asked her to forgive me for the way I spoke to her. Her answer melted my heart and showed me a glimpse of God's love. She said, "that's ok Mum, we all make mistakes and I'm sorry for what I did."  Very simple words but coming from a heart of love.

It helps me understand in a small way why creating us as free moral agents was so important to Jesus. If obedience is forced it is not love.
But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press  toward the mark. Phil. 3:13,14

The children cannot sit on the lap of Jesus but they can sit on our lap. What model of Christ do we present to them ?

So often we see mothers and fathers lamenting the condition of the church and the direction their children have gone. However when you go to their FB Timeline you see them trying to look cute and sexy with earrings and heels, fake nails and tight pants, lipstick and sleeveless low cut blouses, displaying sports idols, junk food and other such nonsense. We may criticize the church and fault our children when we first and more severely critique ourselves and separate from the world.

  Fathers and mothers should look upon their children as younger members of the Lord's family, committed to them to educate for heaven. The lessons that we ourselves learn from Christ we should give to our children, as the young minds can receive them, little by little opening to them the beauty of the principles of heaven. Thus the Christian home becomes a school, where the parents serve as underteachers, while Christ Himself is the chief instructor.  {DA 515.2}

Amen, cp. As Sister Dorine shared, we are representing God to our children. As they see us, so they will think of God. That ought to cause mothers and fathers to be concerned how they act. Our children to a great degree reflect our characters, at least at an early age. Then later in life the things learned at an early age will often still be seen in their lives.

And what is the importance of the habits learned early in life?

In childhood and youth the character is most impressible. The power of self-control should then be acquired. By the fireside and at the family board influences are exerted whose results are as enduring as eternity. More than any natural endowment, the habits established in early years decide whether a man will be victorious or vanquished in the battle of life. Youth is the sowing time. It determines the character of the harvest, for this life and for the life to come.

As a prophet, John was “to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” In preparing the way for Christ’s first advent, he was a representative of those who are to prepare a people for our Lord’s second coming. The world is given to self-indulgence. Errors and fables abound. Satan’s snares for destroying souls are multiplied. All who would perfect holiness in the fear of God must learn the lessons of temperance and self-control. The appetites and passions must be held in subjection to the higher powers of the mind. This self-discipline is essential to that mental strength and spiritual insight which will enable us to understand and to practice the sacred truths of God’s word. For this reason temperance finds its place in the work of preparation for Christ’s second coming.  The Voice in the Wilderness, pg 101.

When we see little children being mistreated, it hurts so very much. As Pastor Sean pointed out, we need to have a new heart that loves as Jesus loves. Evidence of true conversion is when we love those who are unlovely in character, those who have hurt us. The world knows this is impossible, but we know that it is the greatest miracle God can do, to change sinners into saints who love their enemy.

How was it that Moses was faithful in all the house of the Lord? Or, how did Daniel withstand the world which was pressing about him from all sides? Did it not all begin in their homes when they were young? Look at the character of the parents of these men and women who honored God in their lives.

Let mothers come to Jesus with their perplexities. They will find grace sufficient to aid them in the management of their children. The gates are open for every mother who would lay her burdens at the Saviour’s feet. He who said, “Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not,” still invites the mothers to lead up their little ones to be blessed by Him. Even the babe in its mother’s arms may dwell as under the shadow of the Almighty through the faith of the praying mother. John the Baptist was filled with the Holy Spirit from his birth. If we will live in communion with God, we too may expect the divine Spirit to mold our little ones, even from their earliest moments.

In the children who were brought in contact with Him, Jesus saw the men and women who should be heirs of His grace and subjects of His kingdom, and some of whom would become martyrs for His sake.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

It is customary for churches to have VBS, or Vacation Bible School. Many churches have church schools. But each of these agencies need to be fully consecrated to Him by having each teacher, helper, or coordinator be thoroughly converted and bring the precious children to Jesus. Jesus' lived what He taught--this is why so many were drawn to Him. May we live out His lessons today by having Him abiding the heart by faith through beholding Him and surrendering our hearts and lives fully, for wherever His Spirit reigns, there peace, joy, and love flow with all of the fruits of the Spirit so that not one is missing. Children are drawn by the love of Christ, and Jesus wants to draw them through us! May we learn the lesson of how Jesus is drawing children to Him by the Holy Spirit and cooperate with His work. Jesus desires the mothers of today to come to Him, and for children who have challenging backgrounds or broken homes to know that in Him is tender, constant love. Jesus loved children, and He loves them deeply today, too! May we in our interactions with children reflect the tender, drawing, winning love of Jesus!

"Among the Jews it was customary for children to be brought to some rabbi, that he might lay his hands upon them in blessing; but the Saviour's disciples thought His work too important to be interrupted in this way. When the mothers came to Him with their little ones, the disciples looked on them with disfavor. They thought these children too young to be benefited by a visit to Jesus, and concluded that He would be displeased at their presence. But it was the disciples with whom He was displeased. The Saviour understood the care and burden of the mothers who were seeking to train their children according to the word of God. He had heard their prayers. He Himself had drawn them into His presence." {The Desire of Ages, page 511, paragraph 2}

As a mother I love to linger in this chapter. Every word is profound, directing mothers with such compelling and encouraging counsel. The thought that Jesus is as much a part of and interested in the families of today as He was when He was on earth deeply touches my heart.

"The mothers were comforted. They returned to their homes strengthened and blessed by the words of Christ. They were encouraged to take up their burden with new cheerfulness, and to work hopefully for their children. The mothers of today are to receive His words with the same faith. Christ is as verily a personal Saviour today as when He lived a man among men. He is as verily the helper of mothers today as when He gathered the little ones to His arms in Judea. The children of our hearths are as much the purchase of His blood as were the children of long ago."

When I was raising my children it was words like this that kept me strengthened to face each day through some very trying times. God's promises are true. He never fails us. We need to stay connected to Him so He can carry out His plans for the spiritual development and saving of our children. We have a huge mission field right in our own homes.

Amen Sister Dorine. What a blessing we have here for parents! And again we have presented not only the importance of obtaining Christian character, but we are told it is by grace allowed into the heart that we are transformed.

     The grace of Christ in the heart will impart a heaven-born dignity and sense of propriety. It will soften whatever is harsh, and subdue all that is coarse and unkind. It will lead fathers and mothers to treat their children as intelligent beings, as they themselves would like to be treated.
     Parents, in the training of your children, study the lessons that God has given in nature. If you would train a pink, or rose, or lily, how would you do it? Ask the gardener by what process he makes every branch and leaf to flourish so beautifully, and to develop in symmetry and loveliness. He will tell you that it was by no rude touch, no violent effort; for this would only break the delicate stems. It was by little attentions, often repeated. He moistened the soil, and protected the growing plants from the fierce blasts and from the scorching sun, and God caused them to flourish and to blossom into loveliness. In dealing with your children, follow the method of the gardener. By gentle touches, by loving ministrations, seek to fashion their characters after the pattern of the character of Christ.
     Encourage the expression of love toward God and toward one another. The reason why there are so many hardhearted men and women in the world is that true affection has been regarded as weakness, and has been discouraged and repressed. The better nature of these persons was stifled in childhood; and unless the light of divine love shall melt away their cold selfishness, their happiness will be forever ruined. If we wish our children to possess the tender spirit of Jesus, and the sympathy that angels manifest for us, we must encourage the generous, loving impulses of childhood.

Parents cannot give to their children what they do not have. We need Jesus in the heart if we want our children to know Him.

May we in our interactions with children reflect the tender, drawing, winning love of Jesus!

Amen! In childhood the mind and heart is most impressible. Let us take advantage of this opportunity to influence the little ones for Jesus.

Jesus is drawing the people around you to Himself; He is drawing the children to come to Him and experience His saving grace. May we be receptive to Jesus' manner of ministry, so that the kind, gentle words He spoke may be expressed through our lips, lighting up our countenances. It was a privilege this summer to serve at Camp Sagola in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and see young children make decisions for baptism with the desire to follow Jesus and be His forever! Ministry to children was a true joy to Jesus, and it will be for us as He abides in our hearts by a living faith surrender!

"Among the Jews it was customary for children to be brought to some rabbi, that he might lay his hands upon them in blessing; but the Saviour's disciples thought His work too important to be interrupted in this way. Amen Pastor Sean. What opportunities we have with the little ones!

Here is an important truth that will help many discern heresy from sound doctrine. Parents are promised that if a baby dies it will be saved by the faith of believing parents. There is nothing in Scripture as to what happens to little ones whose parents are not converted. 'We need to be silent for we do not know. How important that we be in a converted state. The future of a very young child may be at risk.

In today's reading we find that the Holy Spirit will be an aid to rearing our little ones if we are found abiding in Christ.

Even the babe in its mother's arms may dwell as under the shadow of the Almighty through the faith of the praying mother. John the Baptist was filled with the Holy Spirit from his birth. If we will live in communion with God, we too may expect the divine Spirit to mold our little ones, even from their earliest moments.

Laodicean parents lack this aid as their children grow. How very sad indeed. But, for the parents who surrender the whole heart, not only do they have love, joy, and peace, their children will be seen to be under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

Not only are parents responsible for their influence on their children but the whole church family is. Children watch and listen and pick up attitudes that adults often think are unnoticed by the little ones. There are children coming to church whose parents are members but not converted. Maybe we can be surrogate parents (so to speak) to these little ones and even at a tender age they can accept Jesus into their hearts because of a loving converted teacher or loving member.

Yes, dear Sister, we can be an influence for good for many children. One of the important things we can do is push for schools that follow the light given. Our schools have no been walking in the light, and therefor we are responsible for lack of opportunity and the damage being done in our schools.

This is a very sad chapter as it portrays what ought to be done in the home and in the church, and speaks of the result on the lives of the little ones when parents do not love Jesus with the whole heart.

 Among the Jews it was customary for children to be brought to some rabbi, that he might lay his hands upon them in blessing; but the Saviour's disciples thought His work too important to be interrupted in this way. When the mothers came to Him with their little ones, the disciples looked on them with disfavor. They thought these children too young to be benefited by a visit to Jesus, and concluded that He would be displeased at their presence. But it was the disciples with whom He was displeased. The Saviour understood the care and burden of the mothers who were seeking to train their children according to the word of God. He had heard their prayers. He Himself had drawn them into His presence.

How many mothers today have this great burden who make sacrifices in order to train their children according the Word of God? How many understand the influence they exert on their children when they misrepresent the character of Christ? Oh, how very sad!

     The Saviour regards with infinite tenderness the souls whom He has purchased with His own blood. They are the claim of His love. He looks upon them with unutterable longing. His heart is drawn out, not only to the best-behaved children, but to those who have by inheritance objectionable traits of character. Many parents do not understand how much they are responsible for these traits in their children. They have not the tenderness and wisdom to deal with the erring ones whom they have made what they are. But Jesus looks upon these children with pity. He traces from cause to effect.

Praise God for the parents who understand what will be the results of their care and love for their children. Yes, there are great sacrifices to be made, but what of the blessings to be reaped when our children become an influence for good in the world. What a blessing to see your child experiencing the joy of sharing Jesus with the lost of the world.

There ia a statement in the Spirit of Prophecy which explains the mother's responsibility so very well. The modern day Eves who think their work with their children is not so important as what they believe to be their real work is shown to be a mistake.

There is a God above, and the light and glory from His throne rests upon the faithful mother as she tries to educate her children to resist the influence of evil. No other work can equal hers in importance. She has not, like the artist, to paint a form of beauty upon canvas; nor, like the sculptor, to chisel it from marble. She has not, like the author, to embody a noble thought in words of power; nor, like the musician, to express a beautiful sentiment in melody. It is hers, with the help of God, to develop in a human soul the likeness of the divine.

The mother who appreciates this will regard her opportunities as priceless. Earnestly will she seek, in her own character and by her methods of training, to present before her children the highest ideal. Earnestly, patiently, courageously, she will endeavor to improve her own abilities, that she may use aright the highest powers of the mind in the training of her children. Earnestly will she inquire at every step, “What hath God spoken?” Diligently she will study His word. She will keep her eyes fixed upon Christ, that her own daily experience, in the lowly round of care and duty, may be a true reflection of the one true Life.  Adventist Home, pg 237.

Mothers who are trying to train your children, take note of how God looks at your work. Many, who even read this, will not take it to heart. The world, the church, and many parents will not understand or follow the light given as to how important the mother's work is in rearing her children. "No other work can equal hers in importance."

Mothers and fathers who put ministry in the church and in the world in front of the ministry to their children err. Ministry in the home is to be our first ministry, especially with mothers. May God bless the mothers who accept their responsibility and seek God's help.

Yes Richard as you said, "This is a very sad chapter as it portrays what ought to be done in the home and in the church, and speaks of the result on the lives of the little ones when parents do not love Jesus with the whole heart."  It breaks my heart to see the lack of guidance that children in the church are getting today. The children 'rule' in so many homes.

"As the mother teaches her children to obey her because they love her, she is teaching them the first lessons in the Christian life. The mother's love represents to the child the love of Christ, and the little ones who trust and obey their mother are learning to trust and obey the Saviour."

Wow, how can any mother ignore this truth and feel their way is better? In our area I have watched a generation of children grow up. 99 percent of them have left the church. I know that hearts can change and like the prodigal son many can see their error and come back home. We can never give up on the erring.  God doesn't.

"His heart is drawn out, not only to the best-behaved children, but to those who have by inheritance objectionable traits of character."

Today is "Reformation Day," as on October 31, 1517 Martin Luther boldly nailed the 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. And the reformation is not over! It is deeply needed in the family circle, and in the way children are trained. We can be thankful that Jesus is willing to bring the transformation of true revival and reformation to every soul willing to come unto Him. Little children can learn to trust the Savior, and have love, joy and peace with all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing (the evidence of conversion). God loves each of His precious ones!

"As the Holy Spirit moves upon the hearts of the children, co-operate with His work. Teach them that the Saviour is calling them, that nothing can give Him greater joy than for them to give themselves to Him in the bloom and freshness of their years." {The Desire of Ages, page 517, paragraph 4}

The future was before Him. Jesus was reading the life destiny of the little ones brought to Him, even as He reads the life destiny of the children of this generation. Think of the incredible privilege we each have to be converted like little children and trust God with a full-heart surrender, because He loves us.

"And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 18:2-4).

Think of the privilege we have in planting the seeds of truth in the opening hearts and minds of the young people around us, that they may become heirs of His kingdom, and be missionaries for Him!

"In the children who were brought in contact with Him, Jesus saw the men and women who should be heirs of His grace and subjects of His kingdom, and some of whom would become martyrs for His sake. He knew that these children would listen to Him and accept Him as their Redeemer far more readily than would grown-up people, many of whom were the worldly-wise and hardhearted. In His teaching He came down to their level. He, the Majesty of heaven, did not disdain to answer their questions, and simplify His important lessons to meet their childish understanding. He planted in their minds the seeds of truth, which in after years would spring up, and bear fruit unto eternal life." {The Desire of Ages, page 512, paragraph 4}

This really struck me that Jesus foresaw those who would be martyrs for His sake. This reminds me of how recently the second line from the beautiful hymn, "Faith of our Fathers," recently made a strong impact upon my mind, especially as it would concern children growing up just before the final time of trial and persecution that precedes Jesus' second coming:

"Our fathers, chained in prisons dark,
Were still in heart and conscience free;
How sweet would be their children’s fate,
If they, like them, should die for thee!
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!"

Whatever our destiny in these last days, and wherever the children trained up to love and follow the Lord are called, may they daily see in the family circle a witness what heaven is life, and the tender and powerful revelation of the character of Christ whose words will bear fruit in their lives as they yield to Him!
"When we live by faith on the Son of God, the fruits of the Spirit will be seen in our lives; not one will be missing." {The Desire of Ages, 676.4}

Amen Pastor Sean. How I love this chapter. If all mothers would read and study this chapter they would pick up their privileged duties anew as did the mothers in Jesus day; uplifted and encouraged. I was interested in the sentence that said John the Baptist was filled with the Holy Spirit from his birth. To me that says that the formation of a child's character starts even before birth because the mother's connection or (lack of) with Jesus will affect the baby as well. That is an awesome thought.

"Let mothers come to Jesus with their perplexities. They will find grace sufficient to aid them in the management of their children. The gates are open for every mother who would lay her burdens at the Saviour's feet. He who said, "Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not," still invites the mothers to lead up their little ones to be blessed by Him. Amen!!  What a wonderful revelation of God's love and how He made humanity to be able to learn while even in the womb! And what a blessing to be born with the Holy Spirit!! How few seek this.  :(

     The Christian worker may be Christ's agent in drawing these children to the Saviour. By wisdom and tact he may bind them to his heart, he may give them courage and hope, and through the grace of Christ may see them transformed in character, so that of them it may be said, "Of such is the kingdom of God."

A lesson for us today!
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

"Encourage the expression of love toward God and toward one another.

What a grand and awesome privilege it is as a parent to help nurture and mold the character of Jesus into the minds and hearts of the little ones that God has blessed us with, whether they be our own or perhaps through the work of the Sabbath School. But this does require of us a personal relationship with Jesus. We cannot give what we do not take time to acquire.[/b]

"As you win their confidence in you as followers of Christ, it will be easy to teach them of the great love wherewith He has loved us. The Lord will give to fathers and mothers grace to interest their little ones in the precious story of the Babe of Bethlehem, who is indeed the hope of the world."

It is an encouraging chapter. The greatest work is done in infancy and the tender years, but praying and God-fearing mothers of children of all ages may take heart. Ladies, let us remember also the influence that we have on other children and on grandchildren. They might be children at church, in our street, in the supermarket queue. I attended two different churches when my girls were little. I am eternally grateful to two godly women aged in their 70s, one at each church, who took me and my girls under their wings. They were mother figures to me and grandmother figures to my girls. They prayed with us, invited us to their table. I, in turn, was able to be a like daughter to the one who was alone with a disabled son.

Amen, Sister Marelis. This is what God intends for our churches to be. They are not there yet, but soon will be. But, even though the church remains in a Laodican condition, not all in the church are in that condition. Praise God for His grace that has been received into the hearts of many in His church. There are those who rightly represent His character and it does indeed have its influence on children and adults alike.

Thank you for sharing your touching testimony of its power.
Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

"As the Holy Spirit moves upon the hearts of the children, co-operate with His work. Teach them that the Saviour is calling them, that nothing can give Him greater joy than for them to give themselves to Him in the bloom and freshness of their years. The Saviour regards with infinite tenderness the souls whom He has purchased with His own blood. They are the claim of His love. He looks upon them with unutterable longing. His heart is drawn out, not only to the best-behaved children, but to those who have by inheritance objectionable traits of character."

The Word of God says in the Gospel of Mark chapter 10....."13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

"Many parents do not understand how much they are responsible for these traits in their children. They have not the tenderness and wisdom to deal with the erring ones whom they have made what they are. But Jesus looks upon these children with pity. He traces from cause to effect.  The Christian worker may be Christ's agent in drawing these children to the Saviour. By wisdom and tact he may bind them to his heart, he may give them courage and hope, and through the grace of Christ may see them transformed in character, so that of them it may be said, "Of such is the kingdom of God."

Help me , Jesus, to be kind and gentle, sympathetic and patient with all that I come in contact with, especially children , who are so quick to discern real love and genuine compassion. Help me, Jesus, to reflect Your love to all who cross paths with me today and through the Holy Spirit draw each one closer to You, Jesus, as the opportunity arises.
