Rain Barrels/Water Collection

I'm wondering if anyone has actually constructed a rain barrel connected to their roof gutter system? I'm seriously considering hooking one up to catch water for my garden. There are lots of plans and ideas on the internet but I'd be interested in tips and ideas from people here who have done this already or are thinking about it.

I have many neighbors who do this. Some use small catchments while others have gone large with 3-5K gallon tanks. I highly recommend it. The setup is minimal.
