9.0 Quake and Tsunami Hit Japan
« on: March 11, 2011, 05:02:31 AM »
A massive earthquake has hit the north-east of Japan, triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage.

Japanese television showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away by a vast wall of water after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake.

The quake has sparked fires in several areas including Tokyo. At least 32 people were killed, officials said.

It struck about 250 miles (400km) from the capital at a depth of 20 miles. There have been powerful aftershocks.

The tremor, measured at 8.9 by the US Geological Survey, hit at 1446 local time (0546 GMT). Seismologists say it is one of the largest earthquakes to hit Japan for many years.

Roland Buerk BBC News, Tokyo

When the earthquake hit, buildings in Tokyo swayed. Walking was like crossing the deck of a ship at sea.

People poured down from their offices and stood in the street staring up.

A large fire seemed to have broken out in one part of the city and, in another place, injured people were being brought out of a station.

The authorities immediately issued a tsunami warning.

In Tokyo, public transport has been suspended, elevators are switched off in many buildings and thousands of people have gathered in squares and around train stations.

A tsunami warning was extended across the Pacific to North and South America

North Shores of Hawaii have been evacuated in preparation for tsunami.

Kyodo news agency said a 10-metre wave (33ft) struck the port of Sendai in Miyagi.

Japan's NHK television showed a massive surge of debris-filled water sweeping away buildings, cars and ships and reaching far inland.

Motorists could be seen trying to speed away from the wall of water.

Farmland around Sendai was submerged and the waves pushed cars across the runway of the city's airport. Fires broke out in the city's centre.

In addition to the U.S. West Coast, tsunami warnings are also in effect for Hawaii. The first wave is estimated to arrive at approximately 3:07am HST for Kauai, 3:21am for Oahu, 3:27am HST for Maui and 3:46 HST for the Big Island. weather.com

From The Weather Channel's Dr. Knabb:

-These waves are about a 7-8 hour travel time from the earthquake center to Hawaiian coast.
-Very long, fast moving waves moving about 50mph when they reach Hawaiian islands. It doesn’t take 20 or 30 foot tsunami waves to cause inundation. Even just 3 feet of water can cause major problems.
-Inundation could wrap around the islands of Hawaii, not just the Western coast.
-Several minutes of inundation at a time. Ranging anywhere from 5-15 minutes each.
-West coast a couple hours after Hawaii.
-A cubic yard of water weighs about 1700 pounds. So just the sheer weight of all this water is remarkable.

The BBC: New Zealand later downgraded its alert to a marine threat, meaning strong and unusual currents were expected.

After the great flood that destroyed all living things upon the earth, the tower of Babel was under construction so that when the next flood came they would be above it. Today, there are those who suppose they can build bridges and buildings to withstand earthquakes and fires. But, they cannot. It will be seen that man is not above God and judgment will come to those who reject God's mercy.

Japan is not a "Protestant" nation. God has had His hand over professing Christian nations, but that is soon to come to an end.  Japan has earthquake "proofed" her buildings to a greater extent than any nation. When judgments come, none will be able to withstand that which Satan is sure to bring and God will allow.

Those who say that there are no more earthquakes today than in the past will soon cease speaking such foolishness. They are signs of the times, signs of the soon coming of Christ. Let us look up for our redemption draweth nigh.

Fifth largest recorded quake in the last hundred years. Reports of 88,000 missing and rising, towns on fire, farmland destroyed. But the fear that the nuclear reactors could over heat is a grave concern.
O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. O Lord, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing. Jeremiah  10:23-24

It is another disaster of great magnitude. They will continue to increase as signs of the end.  May 21 is not the end. Harold Camping is a false prophet and has proved it in the past. 2012 is not the end. But, earthquakes and other "natural disasters" as well as other troubles, economic and terrorism and war are all indications that judgment is in the land. God is allowing this as His Spirit is being withdrawn and the winds are being let loose.

Warnings are still in effect for the West Coast of US.

40 aftershocks. This is the largest quake to ever hit Japan. A train is reported missing in Japan. The number of deaths will increase dramatically from the tsunami having hit densely populated cities.

Is a 9.5 the highest recorded quake ? I wonder how long before we see a 10.   If I understand correctly a 10 would be many times higher than a 9.5 though I have heard many different calculations as to how much higher that would be. It probably matters not as enough 9.0s in the right spots will certainly get everyone's attention.

Based on U.S. Geological Survey documents.

Great earthquakes occur once a year, on average. The largest recorded earthquake was the Great Chilean Earthquake of May 22, 1960 which had a magnitude (MW) of 9.5.[8]

The following table lists the approximate energy equivalents in terms of TNT explosive force[9] – though note that the energy is that released underground (i.e. a small atomic bomb blast will not simply cause light shaking of indoor items) rather than the overground energy release. Most energy from an earthquake is not transmitted to and through the surface; instead, it dissipates into the crust and other subsurface structures.

It is now 4:00am in Japan, 12 hours after the quake. Tokyo did not experience heavy damage from the quake, but there is an interesting thing to observe in Tokyo. When the quake hit, it created gridlock in the city. It is still in gridlock. When a large quake hits a large city this will be one of the great problems, getting out of the area will be nearly impossible. Fires and tsunamies will take a heavy toll in these densely populated areas.

Something to consider.....three days ago we reported on the 7.2 quake in Japan. They were reporting aftershocks. But, now, we see they were not aftershocks, but they are  calling the 7.2 a "foreshock".  :(

So, the plate tectonic theory is not exactly what it is believed to be.

They are  now reporting many aftershocks. Do we have confidence in their science? I don't.  It may end  up that the 8.9 was only a "foreshock".   Man will one day soon, recognize that he does not know from science that the earth is only 6,000 years old, not millions as scientists proclaim with such great assurance.

Today we are listening to experts tell us about shifting plates and fault lines. The quakes continue today at levels up to 6.6.

50 quakes have been reported in the area in the last three days, the last being a 6.6 within the last hour. And it was a very shallow quake which could cause more damage. 6.6 is not a little quake.

Another quake hits Japan. It was 6.7.   Nuclear power plant is leaking radiaton.

While natural disaster is creating sorrow in Japan, the Middle East continues to melt down. Libya is bombing the people and demonstrations have spread to Saudi Arabia, the world's largest exporter of oil. And in Wisconsin, labor unions are on the rampage.

"Experts" are expressing their minds that there does not have to be damage from quakes. That in areas where structures are built with strong codes, they survive.  It is certainly true that buildings do fare better where buildings are built stronger. So, now we shall add more burden on people so that only the wealthy can have homes. Costs will go up significantly when building to withstand a 9.5 quake. And, then when a 10 comes, what then?

The US Geological Survey is reporting that the coast of Japan has shifted 8 feet (2.4m) because of the earthquake in Japan. The Earth's axis has reportedly been shifted 10 inches too. - Gizmoto Factoid

* The first tsunami wave in Samoa was reportedly one foot tall, but the seventh wave was much larger, indicating coastal areas shoudl remain on tsunami advisory well after the first wave hits, even if that wave appears small.

* 100+ aftershocks have rated 5.0 magnitude or more in Japan since the initial shake.

* Earth's axis has reportedly shifted ten inches as a result of the quake, and Japan's coast is said to have permanently shifted 2.4 metres.

* The quake was 900 times stronger than the quake that hammered San Francisco in 1989.

* Aftershocks from the Peru earthquake of almost a year ago are still felt to this day.

* Honshu earthquake occurred on ocean floor of the Pacific plate, bumping 250 miles of coastline.

* Shaking was felt as far away as China.

* The Honshu quake was not as large as the 1964 Alaska earthquake, but was comparable to the recent Chile earthquake.

* Tsunami waves that hit California earlier today washed three onlookers out to sea. Two have been recovered.

* St Louis, Missouri media outlets report that city has moved an inch as a result of the quake.

* Waves from the ensuing tsunami reached 32 feet high.

The question has been asked by a CNN reporter, "What is behind the string of earthquakes we have seen?" It appears that the world is beginning to admit  that there is something out of the ordinary going on. We can anticipate that the answer will be something other than Biblical. But, that will not always be so. We know that the Sunday legislation will be passed by Congress and Signed by the president when pressure is brought to bear by the religious ones in the United States. What causes this people to come to this point where they are successful with the Congress and president? It is because of the disasters being experienced. In other words, the liberal anti God society of today finds excuses for disasters, but one day soon, it will be impossible to not believe there is some supernatural explanation.  It will be then said that God is the cause because the Sunday has been desecrated. But, today, few in the Congress wish to think that that God has anything to do with earthquakes. And, in Japan and many other countries, there are very few who believe in God.

The answer to the CNN reporter by three scientist types was that there is no relationship that would cause the multiple quakes. Those who believe there is some "cause" were made fun of.  They do not believe in the devil or God.
