The Adventists Airs on PBS
« on: February 19, 2010, 09:42:39 PM »
Soon to air in the US on PBS stations is a new documentary entitled, The Adventists.

The ADVENTISTS home video release on DVD is scheduled for February 2010; broadcasts on PBS stations may be scheduled for some stations at the end of February 2010.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is an American-born religion that began in the mid-1800’s. From the outset it gave a priority to a healthy lifestyle as part of its understanding of Scriptures. Special diets, concentration on exercise and healthy living have resulted in its membership living on average 8-10 years longer than others.

National Geographic's Dan Buettner collaborated in a study by the National Institute on Ageing and later wrote about its findings in a book that became the best-selling The Blue Zones. In his interview for the film he shares what he discovered about Adventists. "Week after week, month after month, year after year they're observing the Sabbath, maintaining a plant-based diet and getting exercise. And we know that each of those are associated with longevity - lower body-mass-index, lower rates of heart disease and lower rates of cancer."

I hope in the documentary there is some explanation for the picture where the blood letting is taking place. It gives the impression of someone comitting suicide.

It's set to show in my area on the 4th at 4pm. You'll need to get your local PBS website and check the listings.

"The Adventists" caught the eye of Christianity Today magazine:

The Adventist Advantage?
Documentary, now available on DVD, asks why denomination's members live longer.

While visiting Loma Linda, California, to promote his film Bonhoeffer, producer-director Martin Doblmeier toured the University Medical Center, famous for infant heart transplants and cancer research. He was fascinated by "the juxtaposition between the rather conservative, traditional faith that is Adventism and this 21st-century pioneering medical technology that they're doing." His interest led to The Adventists (Journey Films), a 60-minute documentary allegedly airing on American Public Television this month (it's also available on DVD). Focusing on four cutting-edge hospitals in California, Florida, and Ohio, the film lauds their luxurious campuses, personal patient care, and state-of-the-art technology. Adventist hospital marketing departments must be drooling.

Interesting article. At first I couldn't understand the author's veiled (or not so veiled) attempt at putting down the Seventh-day Adventist church. However, at the end of the article it states that the author was raised SDA.

A lady walked into our local congregation last Sabbath as a result of seeing "The Adventists." She is a strict vegan, eating mostly raw foods - that is her interest, so she visited us. It happened to be the first Sabbath of the month for potluck and she was met with only two large salads, predictably raw, but the rest was cooked casseroles with mystery sauces. Our witness is weak in some areas, this one in particular.

In the beginning, we were discussing the Sabbath when she approached my table and asked to sit next to me because I was leading the discussion. We had a very pleasant conversation on why Sabbath sacredness is so important. She appreciated learning how the seventh day was changed to the first by presumed papal authority. When she expressed her interest in dietary matters, it was a little too revealing to review what was laid before us for a meal. I explained to her that even those with great light are sometimes hesitant to follow the best laid plans. She concurred even those in her circles have the same difficulty. That we did not have a good witness for her on that day did not deter her desire to return and bring a favorite dish to share with those with great light.

You had some reverse witnessing going on. Praise the Lord! Forget the raw. In most churches the majority of the dishes have dairy eggs, or vinegar. Some SDAs would have been upset with you guest. I bring a huge colorful salad almost every Sabbath with a homemade lemon juice dressing. Often I have plenty of left overs.
