AVG 8.0 free appears to be almost as intrusive as Norton. Granted, it is good, yet it slowed my computer to a degree that I finally uninstalled it. The previous versions did not do this. Maybe they improved it too much!

Did this happen only during a computer scan? Or did it make it slow all the time? I ask because I'm using the free version of AVG 8.0 and haven't had any problems YET. However, also I don't have it scheduled to do scans. I manually tell mine when I want a scan done.

It made it slow after installing it - I leave the computer alone during a scan and go do other things. I used it a couple of days thinking things might level out, but it didn't.
That version might not like Stopzilla 5.0, which I am not going to get rid of.

I have noticed that AVG in the last year or so has slowed my computer down also. I now pause it when working online. On this computer I am running xp and it is a P4 chip. It may be a combination of things since the internet is running more complex programs. I usually have 8 to 10 windows open and some of them have flash running or pop ups that take resources.

Not to give you a hard time Richard but you kind-of sound like the people that call me and complain that their computer is running slow. When I get there I look at the taskbar and it is over running with applications. Maybe it's time to upgrade to a dual or quad core???

You are so right! The poor little thing! But, I paid for it and I am going to use it until it dies! I keep the programs that are running down as much as I can. I leave IM on the bar, but shut it down every time I boot up. I keep thinking I may need it. Because I run two computers, I see the difference that the chip makes, but also believe that AVG is a hog. I might be wrong, but it appears that way. I am not complaining. It does a good job. I just pause it now until I am finished doing my work and then let it do its. We are very happy with each other. It would be better if the program recognized my need and stopped on its own, but so far, it ignores me until I click that "Pause" button!! Yes, the ten windows is a bit much, but its the combination of getting sent to a new window and wanting to do multiple tasks. A quick question for you, dear brother. The taskbar on the left side. Those programs are running in the background also?

Yes, those also are running in the background. However, they may be just a "service" and are waiting for instructions to do something bigger. If you want to see almost everything that is running in the background do this...
Hit the cntrl, alt, and delete buttons at the same time. Then click on the "processes" tab and take a look. You can sort them according how much cpu "power" they are using by clicking on the top of the "cpu" column. Click on it once and it will sort it from lowest to highest. Click it again and it will sort it from highest to lowest.
When my computer is running slow this is where I go to see what is taking up so much of my cpu's cycles.
It is here that you might discover that there are things running that you don't need running in the background. For instance jshedup.exe (or something similar) is the automatic java update service. If you're like me you want to control when updates happen so I don't want this automatically running. So....
What you need to do is click on "start" then click on "run" and type "msconfig" and hit "enter". Then click on "startup". Now you will see everything that automatically starts up when you boot your computer up. If you wish to keep something from automatically running just make sure that you uncheck the box next to the item.
Just keep in mind that when you reboot it will giving you a warning that the startup has been modified and will ask you if you want to keep it that way.
These are everything that Windows doesn't mind you seeing. However, there are some things that are even hidden from this.

Upgrading to AGV 9.0 has twice generated this error:
Local machine: install actions planned Installation: Error: MSVC Redistributables installation failed. Installation of AVG can not continue.
It isn't crucial that I upgrade, but would like to. May have to hit the AVG forum to get an answer to this. WDYT?

Hummm. I'd rather have AVG correct the problem than install yet another fix. WDYT?

It could be that AVG might alter their program for this error. But that depends on how many people are getting the error. The download that is suggested will not harm your system it is package for C++ from Microsoft. The new AVG may require this to run.
