Title: EG White Disk is Not Just Spirit of Prophecy
Post by: Richard Myers on June 01, 2019, 06:33:37 PM
We learned by accident that the EG White disk has "modern English" on it. Someone thought it necessary to change the words being used by Ellen White. We have just accidentally found that there are other things written on the disk that are not Spirit of Prophecy. Do not accidentally quote the wisdom of man by mistake.

Here is a screen shot of what I read today. I am used to thinking all I read is inspired, but this was a little confusing. Then I saw over to the left it was coming from "modern English." But, I thought "modern English" was a modification of the inspired writings of Ellen White. This was not. What do we have now on the disk? Someone has influence to get their thoughts on the disk?

I suggest the Estate put out a new disk separating all the other stuff from inspiration. And, including all the inspiration released together instead of separated as it is now. It is not right to have to tick all boxes except what is not inspired.

Introduction to the book you showed.  A good reminder to make sure what book we are reading on the EGW disk.

A Call to Stand Apart is a first. It is the first Ellen White book prepared by the White Estate especially for twenty-first-century young adults. It also is the first book in which a variety of inspired counsels have been drawn together from various previously published Ellen White sources and the language adapted to reach contemporary youth. { AC 9.1 }
A Call to Stand Apart makes available from selected Ellen White writings the core ideas that deal with important issues faced by youth and young adults today. To help communicate successfully with the potentially large audience of youthful readers, sentences and paragraphs have been condensed and language has been modernized. But every effort has been made to be faithful to the content, ideas, and principles set forth by Ellen White. In no case has the thought in the original been changed. { AC 9.2 }
The 17 chapters of the book have been chosen to address issues faced by contemporary young adults in a twenty-first-century context. Each chapter is prefaced by the testimony of a young adult who has found in Ellen White’s books the inspiration that he or she would like to have others share. { AC 9.3 }
We believe that the principles penned more than 100 years ago under divine inspiration are more relevant than ever. It is our hope that thousands of readers will find A Call to Stand Apart so compelling, interesting, and inspiring that they will go on to explore the deep spiritual riches found in Ellen White’s standard writings. May each reader “catch the vision.” { AC 9.4 }

Thank you for sharing, Lena.   I am sure they have good intentions. And, maybe changing inspired truth so that uneducated youth can understand is a good idea. But, it has no place on the disk unless completely separated from the inspired counsel we have been given. I appreciate the Ellen White history that has been included on the disk, but it too ought to be in a separate area. At least with it, they were smart enough to place uninspired writing in caps. And, we have added statements from Ellen White that is not part of the standard area as is this modern stuff. It hinders study by many who are not familiar with such things. I spend a lot of time and have since the disk first came out. But, I have been surprised to find out that I was reading what someone else said inspiration said. I don't appreciate that at all. I am responsible to those who come under my influence and to quote a prophet when the prophet did not speak those words is very wrong. Modern language ought to be put in green or purple or something so others will understand they are not reading what the prophet said.

 And yes, I fee the same way about many of the modern day bibles.

I agree with you.  I don't want to read the modern language "stuff" either or others opinions.  Am glad that you brought the problem to my attention so that I will be careful in perusing the disk.  I find it difficult to discover what all is on the disk.  Maybe there is a list or index that I just haven't found yet.

Lena, while I live on that disk, neither am I familiar with it except where I am, in the writings of Ellen White. I complained some years ago about the "modern English" that was popping up on searches. At first I had no idea it was there. We get used to the language used by Sister White and it was obvious that it was not her writing. I contacted the Estate and was told that we could tick all boxes except Modern English and it would not come up in our searches.

I have not done that, but now that we have more that is not inspired, I have ticked all boxes except Modern English. Now, hopefully what we read will be inspired absent of the wisdom of man.  There will still be the Biography,but as I shared, the inspired is separated from the writings of man by using caps for that which is not inspired.

While discussing inspiration, let me add my thoughts on the Spirit of Prophecy as we see it. Some compilations will mislead the reader, as some have thought that placing their thoughts for titles of what they have gleaned supports that title. Sometimes they err and have misunderstood what the inspired statement meant. The title they have chosen is not reflective of what follows.

And Sister White made it clear that there is the common and the holy. At times when she spoke, the words were not inspired commentary. Therefore, we ought not expect every thing in every letter was inspired counsel. She was at liberty to be a woman, a mother, a wife, a friend, and a prophet. Not all she uttered was inspired.

These are my thoughts, and all must come to their own conclusion as to what is truth. I share them in hopes that all who read will be careful in what they teach as truth. What a blessing we have been given in the Spirit of Prophecy!

Didn't know about boxes to click but have explored and found that.  Thanks.

I have only one compilation, Last Day Events.  Ordered it sight unseen.  Would rather read her in context not something someone picked out which may or may not really be saying what they are passing it off as saying.  The Spirit of Prophecy is a wonderful blessing but we have to be careful not to misrepresent it.
