Title: Most Beautiful Hymns
Post by: Richard Myers on February 28, 2008, 10:12:57 PM
Singing praises to God is just as much worship as is preaching a sermon.  Shall we share some of the music that has touched our hearts?

We are creating libraries of music, video, text, books, etc.  Bear with us as we clean things up.  As with the GC session interviews, we are getting material online that will be edited later. It takes time. But, we want to make available this material because we believe it will strengthen our Christian experience. In this case with the music, we have video and some will be edited, some will be deleted. Other video has kept us from putting it online. So, it is not that we have not examined the material first. I have. But, it does need to be cleaned up. Please suggest any ideas you have or any concerns.

Oh, there are so many!

I think my favorite is "I'd Rather Have Jesus" - page 327 in the current hymnal. Every time we sing it, I am reminded of the time when riches meant more to me than anything - when friends and even family members took first place in my heart. But not any more ...

There is nothing so beautiful as to stand back and listen to a congregation sing this song, looking at their sweet faces as they sing:

"Than to be the king
of a vast domain
Or be held in sin's dread sway"

It is simply breath-taking.

I love that song too. It is so precious. I am thinking also of "Jesus Is The Sweetest Name I Know".  The things that are sweet and wonderful to us now are heavenly things, and at the top of that list is Jesus, and His Name "Is" the Sweetest Name we Know. :)

So many of the great hymns came out of a profound experience with God, and they are products of those experiences.

Some of my favorites:

"It is Well with My Soul."  What an amazing story leading up to the writing of that hymn.

"Will Your Anchor Hold?"  Something to ponder in these troublous times.

"Faith is the Victory."

"Amazing Grace."  We should all take that to heart.

"When the Roll is Called up Yonder."  May we all be there!

That story is a real heart breaker yet shows faith of incredible magnitude, doesn't it?

Tucked safely "somewhere" is a recording made in 1950s of my grandfather, little brother and I singing this song. It was Papa's favorite. I had just managed to learn to play the piano with two hands while my brother and I sang "parts" with Papa singing the lead. What precious memories.

To this day, it is my favorite to play during offertory.

I recall a portion of the story. The author, Horatio Gates Spafford, had lost a child, then suffered from a fire, and then lost more of his family from a ship sinking. Maybe someone can fill in the pieces.  The music and the words are inspired and understood to be what they are. This is the meaning of religious music, of true worship in praise to God in the middle of great loss! Looking unto Jesus!

And, Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be site, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll, The trump shall resound and the Lord shall decend,

"Even so"--it is well with my soul.

Amen!!!   Would you like a blessing today?  Here is the music for you to praise God with song. Below are the words.

click here for music (http://www.letgodbetrue.com/mp3/songs/it-is-well-with-my-soul.mp3)

Sing with understanding, joy, and praise!!

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

And Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Amen, Richard! Beautiful!

I played that very song today for offertory.  Last year when I played it for offering, one of the elders on the podium was quietly singing along with his eyes closed. It was so sweet to hear that I joined in, then ones in the congregation joined in - soon, the entire congregation was singing it. Oh! It was one of the most moving things I have ever experienced. Spontaneous and from the heart!

It is a most precious hymn!

Amen!  Let's look at the words in the first verse:

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,

It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Amen!! This can only be known by experience. We cannot give it to another. Only Jesus can give this peace that passes understanding in the middle of the storm.

And the second verse:

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,

Let this blest assurance control,

That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,

And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

Trials will come to us as they did to the author of this song. He was in great pain, but in the midst of his great trials, he remembered His Lord and His suffering. By faith he beheld Jesus at his right hand to uphold and sustain him. He held onto that blessed assurance of Christ's love and care for his soul, and the souls of his children.

I have a CD of Charles Haugabrooks I got at campmeeting in 1998.  He sings that song on it and I have played it many many times.  It always moves me and that is one of my favorite cds.

I feel deprived!  As much as I love holy music, I have not tried to find such to listen to. I would rather sing, but I do enjoy listening to and singing with those who manifest the character of Christ in song. Is there somewhere online I can listen to this song or another by this brother?

You could probably google his name and find "samples" from a CD.

He has the best control over his voice of most I have ever heard. His phrasing, his breathing - his range. Magnificent - even exceeds Phipps and that is difficult to do, IMO.

Here is one that we sang last Sabbath for the closing hymn. I loved the message.

How Far From Home

by Annie R. Smith

How far from home? I asked, as on I bent my steps--The watchman spake:
"The Long , dark night is almost gone, The morning soon will break.
Then weep no more, but speed thy flight, With Hope's bright star thy guiding ray,
Till thou shalt reach the realms of light, In everylasting day."

I asked the warrior on the field; This was his soul inspiring song:
"With Courage, bold, the sword I'll wield, The battle is not long.
Then weep no more, but well endure The configlict, till thy work is done;
For this we know, the prize is sure, When victory is won."

I asked again; earth, sea, and sun, Seemed with one voice to make reply:
"Time's wasting sands are nearly run, Eternity is nigh.
Then weep no more, with warning tones, Portentous signs are thickening round,
The whole creation, waiting, groans, To hear the trumpet sound."

Not far from home! O Blessed thought! The traveler's lonely heart to cheer;
Which oft a healing balm has brought, And dried the mourner's tear.
Then weep no more, since we shall meet Where weary foot steps never roam
Our trials past, our joys complete, Safe in our Father's home.

As a little girl of ten, my younger brother (eight) and I sang this song anytime someone would ask us. Our dad was a drunk, abusive, contrary in every aspect of his life. Each time we sang it we cried because we were singing about him and our desperate need for him to find Jesus. We knew everything would be better if only our dad had Jesus sitting squarely in his heart.

Then Jesus Came

Verse 1:
One sat alone beside the highway begging,
His eyes were blind, the light he could not see.
He clutched his rags and shivered in the shadows
Then Jesus came and bade his darkness flee.

Chorus:
When Jesus comes, the tempter's power is broken;
When Jesus comes, the tears are wiped away,
He takes the gloom and fills the life with glory,
For all is changed when Jesus comes to stay.

Verse 2:
From home and friends the evil spirits drove him,
Among the tombs he dwelt in misery;
He cut himself as demon powers possessed him,
Then Jesus came and set the captive free.

Verse 3:
"Unclean, unclean!" the leper cried in torment,
The deaf, the dumb, in helplessness stood near;
The fever raged, disease had gripped its' victim,
Then Jesus came and cast out every fear.

Verse 4:
Their hearts were sad as in the tomb they laid him,
For death had come and taken him away;
Their night was dark and bitter tears were falling,
Then Jesus came and night was turned to day.

Verse 5:
So men today have found the Savior able,
They could not conquer passion, lust and sin;
Their broken hearts had left them sad and lonely,
Then Jesus came and dwelt, Himself, within.

We sang this at the Michigan Conference session this last sunday. Hymns have such deep meaning. Some more than others... but I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

I saw One weary
Annie Smith

I saw one weary, sad, and torn,
With eager steps press on the way,
Who long the hallowed cross had borne,
Still looking for the promised day;
While many a line of grief and care,
Upon his brow, was furrowed there;
I asked what buoyed his spirits up,
“O this!” said he—“the blessèd hope.

And one I saw, with sword and shield,
Who boldly braved the world’s cold frown,
And fought, unyielding, on the field,
To win an everlasting crown.
Though worn with toil, oppressed by foes,
No murmur from his heart arose;
I asked what buoyed his spirits up,
“O this!” said he—“the blessèd hope.”

And there was one who left behind
The cherished friends of early years,
And honor, pleasure, wealth resigned,
To tread the path bedewed with tears.
Through trials deep and conflicts sore,
Yet still a smile of joy he wore;
I asked what buoyed his spirits up,
“O this!” said he—“the blessèd hope.”

While pilgrims here we journey on
In this dark vale of sin and gloom,
Through tribulation, hate, and scorn,
Or through the portals of the tomb,
Till our returning King shall come
To take His exile captives home,
O! what can buoy the spirits up?
’Tis this alone—the blessèd hope.

JimB, I love that song by Annie Smith, and all those old pioneer hymns.  Frank Belden contributed so much also to the songs of that period, even though his story has a sad ending.

At campmeeting, our pianist loves the old hymns too, and every year, at the 11:00 meeting through the week, we try to be at the meeting at least 15 minutes early.  He always uses these hymns, and they are so inspiring.  This past campmeeting they were especially fitting at that meeting, because Prof. Jud Lake spoke on "Learning From the Pioneers."

A childhood memory is one of Mother bursting out into song singing this little hymn. They were the very times she needed to be reminded of Jesus' love for her and her children. My younger brother and I would always chime in with the alto and tenor parts and it still stands as one of my very favorite memories of Mother. Today, this little song is stuck on "replay" in my mind. Maybe it's time little grandson learned it!  ;)

I am happy today, and the sun shines bright,
The clouds have been rolled away;
For the Savior said, whosoever will
May come with Him to stay (to stay).

Refrain

“Whosoever” surely meaneth me,
Surely meaneth me, O surely meaneth me;
“Whosoever” surely meaneth me,
“Whosoever” meaneth me.

All my hopes have been raised, O His Name be praised,
His glory has filled my soul;
I’ve been lifted up, and from sin set free,
His blood has made me whole (me whole).

Refrain

O what wonderful love, O what grace divine,
That Jesus should die for me;
I was lost in sin, for the world I pined,
But now I am set free (set free).

Our experience with the current members of the King's Herald is that they have largely strayed from the holy music of the past, yet when approached, they are quick to say they sing what people want to hear. It's a cop out if you ask me. They are in a magnificent position to influence for the good with a return to most beautiful hymns, yet they wish to please the audience.

I agree Sister Sybil, I was highly disappointed. I longed to hear the old hymns and yet not a one. They introduced us to the one among them that transposes what hymns they do with a jazz twist.... is what it is. They tell jokes (on the Sabbath) and get the people hipped up. They started out 98% saying amen. But as it went on more and more were clapping till no one was saying amen. A few of those that did before, like myself, were no longer saying amen to their music anyway. It is a real shame too, they have beautiful voices that blend so well. They think they are doing God's bidding, (giving people what they want???) in their work. But I cannot see it at all.

There is a Fountain

1.   There is a fountain filled with blood
   drawn from Emmanuel's veins;
   and sinners plunged beneath that flood
   lose all their guilty stains.
   Lose all their guilty stains,
   lose all their guilty stains;
   and sinners plunged beneath that flood
   lose all their guilty stains.

2.   The dying thief rejoiced to see
   that fountain in his day;
   and there may I, though vile as he,
   wash all my sins away.
   Wash all my sins away,
   wash all my sins away;
   and there may I, though vile as he,
   wash all my sins away.

3.   Dear dying Lamb, thy precious blood
   shall never lose its power
   till all the ransomed church of God
   be saved, to sin no more.
   Be saved, to sin no more,
   be saved, to sin no more;
   till all the ransomed church of God
   be saved, to sin no more.

4.   E'er since, by faith, I saw the stream
   thy flowing wounds supply,
   redeeming love has been my theme,
   and shall be till I die.
   And shall be till I die,
   and shall be till I die;
   redeeming love has been my theme,
   and shall be till I die.

5.   Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
   I'll sing thy power to save,
   when this poor lisping, stammering tongue
   lies silent in the grave.
   Lies silent in the grave,
   lies silent in the grave;
   when this poor lisping, stammering tongue
   lies silent in the grave.

Thank you, Sybil. There is a difference in my opinion between this and what we see coming forth today called Christian music. They are like the new "bibles", why would we expect them to be full of truth and grace. There was revival when many of these hymns were written and many times they were written not because someone wanted to praise God and sell their music, but because someone was full of God and often had suffered a great calamity. This is when Jesus is so very near, it is when we sense His presence because we need Him so very much.

As we develop this library, please send links to Jim, Sybil, or myself. Or if you have a file, send it also.  We are discussing them as we put them up. Yes, a three person music police patrol. :)  I asked for help because this is a difficult area in our church. And one person's ideas are not enough. We need to take care what we say and do in putting music before the church.

No video is necessary, better to not have it, unless it is something nothing.  Or if it is very very beautiful as in nature footage. The last thing we want is to uplift a "performer".

I love the song "Faith of our Fathers." The words are inspiring, faith building, and rich in history. In a sense they are also contemporary  in that many of us will soon experience the same things as those who went before us. It is a song that could not be more "relevant." There is no fluff and no needless repetition. Perhaps it is just my opinion but I do not believe there is a contemporary song that even approaches this song or that is even on the same level.

More acceptable beautiful hymns. A little subjective when it comes to "beautiful"?  :)

And because there is video with some, any comments are welcomed.  Some video is being edited to remove portions. So, if you find beautiful hymns, but the video is no good, send us the link and we will edit out the video.

 I then beheld the beauty and loveliness of Jesus. His robe was whiter than the whitest white. No language can describe His glory and exalted loveliness. All, all who keep the commandments of God, will enter in through the gates into the city, and have right to the tree of life, and ever be in the presence of the lovely Jesus, whose countenance shines brighter than the sun at noonday. {CET 108.1}

Then I was pointed to the glory of heaven, to the treasure laid up for the faithful. Everything was lovely and glorious. The angels would sing a lovely song, then they would cease singing and take their crowns from their heads and cast them glittering at the feet of the lovely Jesus, and with melodious voices cry, "Glory, Alleluia!" I joined with them in their songs of praise and honor to the Lamb, and every time I opened my mouth to praise Him, I felt an unutterable sense of the glory that surrounded me. It was a far more, an exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Said the angel, "The little remnant who love God and keep His commandments and are faithful to the end will enjoy this glory and ever be in the presence of Jesus and sing with the holy angels."  {EW 66.1}

Fairest Lord Jesus

Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature,
Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor,
Thou, my soul's glory, joy and crown.

Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands,
Robed in the blooming garb of spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
Who makes the woeful heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight,
And all the twinkling starry host;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heaven can boast.

Beautiful Savior! Lord of all the nations!
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, praise, adoration,
Now and forever more be Thine.

The French version of that hymn was one of the favorites in the boys' dorm at Collonges when I was there.  The words are completely different, though.  The French title is "Flots mugissants," which means, "Waves roaring."  The chorus begins, "Le gouvernail de ma nacelle," which means, "the helm of my boat."

I wish we sang it more at church, but I suspect that many pianists are afraid of the chorus.

Most men I know love that song. The chorus gives them a rare chance to lead out in melody with the women responding in kind.  Let's see if we can locate a good recording of it.

  Are you familiar with the song "Ancient Words" ?

It is a beautiful song. I believe it is a new song (could be wrong) but it sounds like a hymn. The message is beautiful.

 Hmmm.... "Holy words long preserved
               for our walk in this world,
               They resound with God's own heart
               Oh let the ancient words impart

                Words of Life, wordfs of Hope
                Give me strength, help us cope
                In this world, where e'er we roam
                Ancient words will guide us home.

                Ancient words ever true
                Changing me and changing you,
                We have come with open hearts
                Oh let the ancient words impart

                Holy words of our faith
                Handed down to this age
                Came to us through Sacrifice
                Oh heed the faithful words of Christ.

                Holy words long preserved
                For our walk in this world.
                They resound with God's own heart
                Oh let the ancient words impart.

Went searching for a singer's name.  Have you searched the internet for hymns?  The devil began with his music in the world, but by the 1980s he was into the church.  It is very hard to find good hymns online. The internet is filled with everything but hymns.  I put in hymns and get garbage.  :(

I am looking for the singer who sang In the Garden in 1985.  She has the most beautiful voice. It is crystal clear and simply beautiful. The song begins with a guitar and moves to a full orchestra by the third verse.  I have a recording stored someplace, but have not heard it for 15 years. I thought I might find it on the internet, but gave up. I am looking for the name of the singer if anyone can remember.

That is a very good point, Marelis. There is confusion about this. I believe that one of the reasons there is so much controversy in the church about music is lack of good information. There are differnt types of musical pieces in the Hymnal. Many of them are hymns and many of them are not hymns. I have never studied hymnody and I don't even know of a good source of information but I know that there are hymns, anthems, carols, psalms, gospel songs, spirituals, and other kinds as well. I believe that most  are appropriate for certain situations. However, it is obvious when reading the words that not all of them were intended to be used for corporate worship.

I believe this causes confusion. Last evening I was watching a discussion group on LLBN consisting of the pastoral staff (5 people) of a large church in Southern CA. They were talking about music. It seemed obvious that none of them have studied deeply into the subject, but all seemed to have strong opinions. Only two of them seemed headed in the right direction. The Assistant Youth Pastor seemed to understand some of the problems, and was clear that she does not like rock music in church, but does not want to impose her views on others. (BTW, they don't allow drums).The pastor for spiritual formation and evangelism seemed to be a little closer to the real problem when he said that pop music in church is exactly like the secular he used to listen to before he was a Chirstian. The youth pastor read the passage from Ephesians 5:19.
   "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord."
He said that this is telling us that all kinds of music is OK as long as we are "making melody to the Lord."

I guess those regular discussions are supposed to be edifying for the TV viewers, but it is too bad that good information is apparantly not available.

   O Love That Will Not Let Me Go

    O Love that wilt not let me go,
    I rest my weary soul in thee;
    I give thee back the life I owe,
    That in thine ocean depths its flow
    May richer, fuller be.

    O light that foll’west all my way,
    I yield my flick’ring torch to thee;
    My heart restores its borrowed ray,
    That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
    May brighter, fairer be.

    O Joy that seekest me through pain,
    I cannot close my heart to thee;
    I trace the rainbow through the rain,
    And feel the promise is not vain,
    That morn shall tearless be.

    O Cross that liftest up my head,
    I dare not ask to fly from thee;
    I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
    And from the ground there blossoms red
    Life that shall endless be.

                         -George Mattheson, 1882

I saw this again for the first time.  :) It's in our old hymnals, I don't know about the newer ones. The words' in the 1st stanza caught me. Our life at best may be a pitiful trickle of a stream; most are dried up. Connected with the Saviour's ocean depths what an influence for good we have. Remarkable what He wants to do through us.

A message from Elder John Thurber:

Sabbath Vespers – November 7, 2014

As the Sabbath hours come to us an hour earlier this week, I want to turn our thoughts to heaven and some of the wonders that we will someday find there.  One of the best things that I look forward to is the music that we will be privileged to hear for the first time from all the heavenly hosts.  We are told in Revelation 5:11,12 – “And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.”  That will be such a thrilling sound to hear!

Let’s sing together:
“There is singing up in heaven such as we have never known,
Where the angels sing the praises of the Lamb upon the throne;
Their sweet harps are ever tuneful and their voices always clear,
O that we might be more like them while we serve the Master here!

(Chorus)  Holy, holy, is what the angels sing,
                And I expect to help them make the courts of heaven ring;
                But when I sing redemption’s story, they will fold their wings.
                For angels never felt the joys that our salvation brings.

So, although I’m not an angel, yet I know that over there
I will join a blessed chorus that the angels cannot share;
I will sing about my Saviour, who upon dark Calvary
Freely pardoned my transgressions, died to set a sinner free.”

Happy Sabbath to you all!  Keep a song on your heart all the time in praise to Him who brings us life eternal.

Here's a Fanny Crosby song I've never heard before, but has a wonderful message.

Yet another of Crosby's that I hadn't heard until today.

Never Give Up

1 Never be sad or desponding,
If thou hast faith to believe;
Grace, for the duties before thee,
Ask of thy God and receive.

Refrain:
Never give up,
Never give up,
Never give up to thy sorrows,
Jesus will bid them depart;
Trust in the Lord,
Trust in the Lord,
Sing when your trials are greatest,
Trust in the Lord and take heart.

2 What if thy burdens oppress thee;
What though thy life may be drear;
Look on the side that is brightest,
Pray, and thy path will be clear. [Refrain]

3 Never be sad or desponding,
There is a morrow for thee;
Soon thou shalt dwell in its brightness,
There with the Lord thou shalt be. [Refrain]

4 Never be sad or desponding,
Lean on the arm of thy Lord;
Dwell in the depths of His mercy,
Thou shalt receive thy reward. [Refrain]

Contemporary dittys don't hold a candle to hymns.  It is like comparing the NIV with the KJV. One is rich and deep and the other shallow and simple.

Oh, WOW!  How beautiful !!  Solos are one thing, but there is nothing like harmony.  Loved it!  I also liked how they did some variety with the speeds.  And no clapping at the end, only Amens.  Made me cry.

Amen Mercy!! The hymn used to be in our hymnal. We need to sing it often, for Jesus is indeed coming soon and we are nearing home!  These young women are Seventh-day Adventists in China.

Definitely not done for entertainment.  Simple accompaniment, sung pure, not breathy.  Message in the words has got to be about the best of any hymn out there.

Amen Marelis. It is one of my favorites also. We often would sing it in our family worship. Jesus is coming in a few more days!! We long to see Him face to face!  Thank you for sharing, it reminded me of the hymn which I never hear in church. My daughter would remind me that the way I liked to sing it was not how it is written. I liked to slow down the  "sounding through the air."  That part of the melody is beautiful.

How appropriate

Verse 1
There are days I know when you get so discouraged,
It seems that all hope is gone.
But there's only One who can give you courage
And strength to carry on.

Verse 2
This old world I know can't last much longer,
And sin will soon pass away.
But my faith in God simply keeps growing stronger,
For Jesus is coming some day!

Chorus
Never give up, Jesus is coming.
It's the darkest just before dawn.
Never give up, Jesus is coming.
Never give up, keep holding on!

Absolutely beautiful. As I listen to these the same feelings come to me as when I'm out in nature where the only sounds are that of God's creation.

The Holy City

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God [is] with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, [and be] their God.    Revelation   21:2,3

When a boy at summer camp in the mountains we sang this song at church. It remains dear to my heart.

Church in the Wildwood

There’s a church in the valley by the wildwood,
No lovelier spot in the dale;
No place is so dear to my childhood,
As the little brown church in the vale.

Refrain

Come to the church in the wildwood,
Oh, come to the church in the dale,
No spot is so dear to my childhood,
As the little brown church in the vale.

How sweet on a clear, Sabbath morning,
To list to the clear ringing bell;
Its tones so sweetly are calling,
Oh, come to the church in the vale.

Refrain

There, close by the church in the valley,
Lies one that I loved so well;
She sleeps, sweetly sleeps, ’neath the willow,
Disturb not her rest in the vale.

Refrain

There, close by the side of that loved one,
To trees where the wild flowers bloom,
When the farewell hymn shall be chanted
I shall rest by her side in the tomb.

Refrain

From the church in the valley by the wildwood,
When day fades away into night,
I would fain from this spot of my childhood
Wing my way to the mansions of light.

Refrain

Yes, I know we already have this song, but it is so beautiful and the pictures are very good. The words are so very clear that we can understand every word. What a wonderful story! God has blessed us with understanding His character.

When I worked at Pinecrest Camp back  in the '60's and '70's, we had what we called "Church Bowl," with benches out under the trees and a men's quartet would sing this hymn every Sabbath morning as people followed the trail to the worship service.

I've been to the "The Little Brown Church in the Vale."  It's in Iowa, and was built in the mid-1800's.  And, yes, it is brown, and it's not very big.

It is interesting to note that when the hymn was written the church did not exist. It was built in response to the hymn. I often wondered was the word vale or dale? Every lyrics I have found have both.  Very interesting. Another interesting thing about the lyrics is that originally it was "How sweet on a clear, Sabbath morning." Today, we find it being changed to Sunday morning.  :(    Maybe just innocent?   If so, they see a difference from their ancestors who believed Sunday was the Sabbath.

Thanks for sharing Brother Wally. Hope you are enjoying your change in life!  Have a blessed Sabbath my dear friend.

Amen!  I experienced the worst pain (physical) that I have ever had a few months ago. When praying, telling Jesus it was ok because I knew I would not be tempted beyond what I could bear, I knew where it was coming from, I asked Him if He could tamp it down just a little bit. The Holy Spirit impressed me to listen to hymns. I did and the pain was immediately reduced. God is so very good! He loves us and cares for us!  The first hymn I heard was Count Your Blessings which I had never before heard. Of course I realized I could not count them which of course caused me to be so very thankful of my loving Savior who has done so very much for me.

When going through tribulation, try counting your blessings.   :)
