Title: F5 Killer Tornado Rips Through Joplin Missouri

It is being reported that Joplin took a direct hit from a F4 Tornado today May 22 at 6pm. Joplin Seventh-day Adventist Church Damaged by Tornado

Pastor Roy Weeden, Missouri director of Adventist Community Services-Disaster Response said “The Adventist church down there was hit but we don’t know how bad yet.  We have missing members.” The Joplin church treasurer’s home has been destroyed. He and his wife were out of the house when the tornado struck. Their adult daughter, who is deaf, sensed the tornado was coming and took her daughter and went into the tub in the bathroom. The Seventh-day Adventist Church's Community Services-Disaster Response for Mid-America is coordinating with federal and local agencies in the wake of a tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri on Sunday.

The single deadliest twister to hit the United States since 1950 left 117 dead and leveled homes and businesses, including the southwest Missouri city's hospital.

While the Joplin Adventist Church sustained minor roof damage, the structure itself is sound, said Dwight Seek, who pastors the church. His wife, Jenny, said several church members' homes incurred damage, and the church treasurer's home was destroyed.

While all regular members have been accounted for, one non-attending member is missing, Jenny Seek said. "It's possible that she is out of town with family. We are praying she is OK," she said.

"Our hearts go out to our church family and indeed the whole community of Joplin," Thomas Lemon, president of the Mid-America Union, said in a statement. "It is at such times that the church community must become again the hands and feet of Jesus to carry His healing touch to people whose lives have been so devastated," the statement continued.

Dan Jackson, president of the church's North American Division, is expected to visit Joplin this week to encourage and pray with church members.

Joplin is under a tornado warning right now.   The death toll is at 123.  This was the deadliest U.S. tornado in the last 50 years.  It is estimated that 750 people have been injured. My daughter and her husband drove up to Joplin a couple of weeks ago and took photos. Daughter said it was so much worse to see it in person. My SIL was born and raised there and his brother still lives there, but was not hurt in the storm.

Deadly Fungus Delivers Another Blow To Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo.—
The death toll from the Joplin tornado has risen to 151.  Three of those deaths were in people stricken with a rare and aggressive fungal infection.  The state health department says it's received reports of eight of the infections among tornado victims.

It's called zygomycosis and is one of the most feared fungal infections.  Now it's adding a terrible insult to injury for some tornado victims.

        A co-director of a Christian ministry broke down crying during the first meeting with Adventist Community Services (ACS) staff involved in Joplin, Mo. tornado relief. He later wrote an email to Jody Dickhaut, president of the Iowa State VOAD and state director of the Iowa ACS Disaster Relief:
        “.... Thank you so much for being a calm presence during the challenges of those first few days. Your warehousing, distribution, and disaster relief competencies were invaluable. However, those competencies would have only added to the challenge without your love for Jesus and people. I deeply appreciated praying with you the first time we met. I deeply appreciated your heart in the middle of the challenge with the Red Cross. I also appreciated your partner's heart during the Red Cross challenge; however, I do not remember his name and did not record his contact information. I deeply appreciated your hug and prayer on Thursday when I thought we should shut down receiving and distribution in the church and the rest of my team would not allow us to do so.
        "Thank you for caring. Thank you for training. Thank you for being a part of the pre-planning. Thank you for showing up with such a great and helpful attitude. Thank you for submitting to Jesus.”
