Title: Firefox
Post by: JimB on October 31, 2005, 06:38:00 AM
For those who wish to have another alternative to Microsoft's "Internet Explorer" you might wish to checkout a product called Firefox. You can find this free browser here.... http://www.mozilla.org/
I think you'll find it worth your time and effort.

Also for those who feel comfortable doing a little digging and adjusting there is something called "extensions" for Firefox. You can find these extensions here.... https://addons.mozilla.org/

One of these extensions that I would recommend is one called "Adblock". Once this is downloaded and installed you can slowly teach your browswer to ignore all those unwanted advertisements that automatically come up when browsing. Another benefit is that because the adds no long appear your browsing becomes a little faster.

Brother Jim, I understand that Firefox is a little different from IE in that it is an open source product. Maybe you can explain a little about this so that our people may want to support it by using it and other open source products?

Good idea brother Richard. Too often I just assume people know things when then they don't.

Firefox is considered what people call "open source" software. Meaning that the source code of the software itself is available to look at. This allows people with programming knowledge to look at the code and see if there is anything "bad". This cuts down on spyware and malware. It also allows you to make changes to the software if you wish. And is 99% of the time free to use.

In some "open-source projects" like linux lots of  different people give their input and in a way create software that comes from a group of people instead of an individual.

The idea is to create free quality software. Because sometimes people just can't afford the commercial products.

You can read a bigger and probably better definition of "open-source" here at Wikipedia

I just downloaded the latest update for Firefox and after installation was told that my Java was not compatible and was disabled. Searched for compatible Java and Firefox said there was none. You may want to hold off on your update until this is resolved. Have not checked anything beyond what is posted here.

It told me the same thing. However, I haven't actually run into any problems yet. I'm not sure why it claims to have disabled jave because I use the java-loop at ....

http://www.intellicast.com/National/Radar/Java.aspx?animate=true

All the time with no problems. I even use the EGW Estate search website which is heavy with java without any problems.

I know there quite a few here who are hip to the various features of Firefox add ons. I have downloaded a few, but the one I appreciate most is the English Dictionary spell checker.  ;D

Thanks, Jim for the referral to Firefox. I love it!

Here is a link to one of my favorite add-ons. It is called research word(s). You highlight any word from a web page or a document opened with your browser and it gives you a bunch of options to find out more information about that word, from dictionaries to encyclopedias online - and more.

Here is what they say about it:

Quote

Search any word on a page via context (right click) menu or from Address Bar shortcuts from a variety of resources, including: Wikipedia, dictionaries, and media sites. Custom preferences allow you to add your own resources, labels and shortcuts.

Quickly lookup a word or phrase simply from the Context Menu or Address Bar. Search words with Wikipedia, Google Definitions, Google Images, Urban Dictionary, IMDb, etc. As well as your own resources.

I really like Firefox, but sometimes it just doesn't work right. I clicked open a link to a site that sent it crashing every time I opened it. I finally had to give up and use IE to open it. I don't know what the problem is, but I wish they'd get it fixed. I wonder if it had to do with Quicktime? The site had video that automatically starts when the site is opened.

Sometimes is it just "one of those things". That site you had problems with worked just fine for me. However, from time to time there are websites that work only with IE. For that take a look at the discussion on Firefox add-ons. There is an add-on that will allow Firefox to view websites through IE.

Yes, I upgraded to 3.0. The interface seems about the same. Some add-ons stopped working, but most are still ok. My favorite ones are still working: colorful tabs, customize google, adblock plus, no script, and research word.

I've had no problems with the program, but haven't noticed much difference either.

It is faster than Internet Explorer. I have more add-ons that I can use compared to IE.

I am going to stick with the 2.xx for now. Just got the toolbar and addons situated! :D If you guys find that it is way superior to 2.xx, let me know - otherwise, I'll keep what I have for a while.

Title: Re: Firefox
Post by: Brian M on June 25, 2008, 02:35:29 PM
I wouldn't call it far superior - I don't notice much of a difference really. It did not adjust my toolbar at all. It did keep my add-ons (updating what needed to be) and told me what add-ons wouldn't work.

I dislike tabs very much.  I like to click once, not twice to go to an existing page. Why do some of you like "tabs"?
Title: Re: Firefox
Post by: Brian M on June 26, 2008, 05:12:49 AM
I only have to click my tabs once to switch between web pages. To open a new tab, I just hit "control +C" and it opens one immediately. I like having them lined up at the top of my screen instead of at the bottom.

Is there a better way to switch between windows?
Title: Re: Firefox
Post by: JimB on June 26, 2008, 06:10:27 AM
It use to be that I didn't care for tabs either because I'm use to using the alt-tab buttons to switch between windows. However you can do the same with tabs only use crtl-tab to switch between your tabs. Here are some Firefox shortcuts...

Ctrl+T               Open a new tab
Ctrl+W               Close the current window or tab
Ctrl+Shift+T       Undo close tab (re-open the last closed tab)
Ctrl+Tab               Switch to the next tab
Ctrl+Shift+Tab       Switch to the previous tab
Ctrl+[0-9]               Switch to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. tab
/                       Open the "Find Text As You Type" widget (bottom of screen)
'                       Open the "Find Links As You Type" widget (bottom of screen)
Ctrl+G               Find the next occurrence of a search phrase
Ctrl+Shift+G       Find the previous occurrence of a search phrase
Ctrl+K               Move cursor to the Web Search widget (top right of screen)
Crtl+F                    Activates the find option (F3 will go to next find)
Alt+D                    To bring you to the address bar

A few months back I installed the Firefox addon for PDF that allows me to choose to download or open a PDF. It upgraded last week, and added a new feature. I tried it out and it really works. It will allow you to save a web page as a PDF document. Saves a lot of copy and paste and you don't loose the formating. If you're a web page saver like me, this is very helpful. I also use the scrapbook addon but for some things PDF is better.
Title: Re: Firefox

I installed scrapbook for firefox a couple of weeks ago after seeing the tutorial on youtube. Scrapbook is suppose to let you save things as pdf's but I couldn't get the feature to work and later I couldn't find the file location or view it without going through firefox first. So I went back to pdfcreator to save webpages.

However, I'll have to check out the pdf addon now that you've recommened it.

I ended up eliminating flash in Firefox. I do have the newer version of Firefox, and not an older one. Do not know if that will make a difference. The flash was keeping me from running certain things that I needed to run.

I've been using the new Firefox since the day it came out. I have not had any problems with it. According to the articles I've read it's suppose to be more secure (relatively). 3.1 will be out soon to compete with google's new browser called "Chrome" and Microsoft's new IE 8.0  These apparently offer a better way of browsing the web anonymously and supposedly Firefox 3.1 will be their catch up in this area.

As far as flash goes... I have not had any problems. I try to keep the flash version up to date and I also use the addon called "flashblock" which allows you to decide if you want flash to play on the page you're looking at.

I updated my addons today and now I have a permanent Google request to download information from my computer for their site ratings.  I cannot close it out since I refused their request! Thanks Mozilla and Google. Just love those companies that don't allow you to close out their screen. Just like the pornography junk that comes in unwanted and does not allow you to close with the "x".  The Illinois governor has a lot of company these days.

Title: Re: Firefox

I guess it is not the same. Looking in the addons, this new version has disabled most of my themes and extensions because it says they are incompatible with this version  :( Even the addons I downloaded to magnify my pages has been disabled! I had track me not, private browsing, page zoom buttons, no squint, google black, key scrambler to name a few that have been disabled.

I've downloaded, but not installed. I'll wait awhile 'cause I usually end up with addons that won't work. And then it's a nuisance waiting for the addon authors to catch up. Thanks, Lewis, for the heads up.

Yes, it's true. It will break a few of the addons. In my case it wasn't anything significant. I lost eQuake and a couple of others but my most important ones stayed in-tact. However, I won't promise that for everyone.

It might be best to like Tirza and wait a couple of weeks for the authors of the addons to catch up with the new version. I'm gonna wait for PortableApps.com in order to put it on my usb flash drive.

The startup time is quite a bit different between my two computers. I hooked up my newer box and it opens quickly while my older one takes quite awhile. It may be software related or it may be the processor, dual core vs single core.
Title: Re: Firefox
Post by: JimB on August 18, 2009, 12:40:17 PM
Dual core vs. single is a big difference in "horse power". A slow load time can be very hard to diagnose as there is so much going on in the "newer" computers.

My Firefox is slow loading up but that is because I use the "portable" version that sits on my thumb-drive. That way I can take it everywhere I go and when I need it all my bookmarks are there and it doesn't leave behind all sorts of unwanted temp files on the host computer.

Good morning, everyone. We had a problem with right-clicking with the mouse for copying/cutting/pasting while using Firefox. It worked fine with Internet Explorer but was a "no go" with Firefox so when all else failed,   ::) I went to Mozilla's Help desk and found a solution:

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Right-clicking+does+not+work?bl=n&s=right%20click

Right-clicking does not work

If you find that nothing happens when you right-clickhold down the Ctrl key while you click on a webpage, it is a known issue caused by the Yahoo! Toolbar for Firefox.

Yahoo!® has been contacted about this issue.

For now, disabling the Yahoo Toolbar add-on will prevent this issue.

   1. At the top of the Firefox window On the menu bar, click on the Tools menu then select Add-ons, to open the Add-ons window.
   2. Select the Extensions panel.
   3. In the list of extensions, select the Yahoo! Toolbar, and click Disable.
   4. Click on Restart Firefox.

I am not a fan of toolbars anyway and for the life of me, I cannot recall installing Yahoo's toolbar on purpose. It may have come with another application but one day, all of a sudden, it was there on the Firefox browser.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you, dear sister. I experienced the same, but just worked around it.  It in nice to have my right click back!!  :)  Apparently it is not restricted to the Yahoo toolbar. Had another report to remove the IE tab. Did not check it out, but if anyone is experiencing this problem, there may be other ad-ons that are buggy.

And I do not recall asking for a Yahoo toolbar either. My browser window is pretty large on top. Eight lines on top before my open windows begins. I am counting all lines. It is about a third of the screen.

The subject of tray icons has been discussed, but I don't recall any solution. xp works fine, it is vista that does it.  Not only does it take an extra click, but since you can't see the icons until you click, it takes a lot more time to find the window you want. :(  Wonder how they came to the conclusion it would be good?
Title: Re: Firefox

Vista...that explains it. Windows 7 does the same thing. Must be one of those new "improvements". I'll do some digging and see if there is a way around it.

Ok...here are a couple of answers. There might be a simpler way to accomplish what you want by "pinning" the desired programs to the taskbar. Here are instructions on how to do that. Scroll down to the section title "Who Needs Quick Launch? Pinning's Simpler"

http://windowssecrets.com/2009/11/19/03-Dumping-Java-cache-improves-browser-performance#known2 (http://windowssecrets.com/2009/11/19/03-Dumping-Java-cache-improves-browser-performance#known2)

However, if you really wish to bring back the Quick Launch Bar you can do so by following the instructions. Scroll to the section title "Bring the Quick Launch toolbar back to Windows 7"

http://windowssecrets.com/2009/11/12/03-Readers-offer-more-ways-to-enhance-Windows-7#known2 (http://windowssecrets.com/2009/11/12/03-Readers-offer-more-ways-to-enhance-Windows-7#known2)

These instructions are for Windows7 but I'm willing to guess that these will work for Vista also.

Interesting... let me know how that works for you. If it works this will be good reference material for the future.

One thought, however, if you do need to get a screen shot. There is a way to get just the window you need and not a picture of your whole desktop. Instead of pressing shft-printscreen press alt-printscreen instead. This will capture the active window only.

It worked and the .NET Framework updates finally installed without errors. Make it a reference.  ;)

Firefox which in the past has been in the past privacy friendly has now drastically changed it ways. :(

Firefox has a reputation as a browser that guards its users’ privacy at the expense of advertiser interests. While consumer advocates might see Firefox’s ad product as a reversal of that stance, Darren Herman, Mozilla’s VP of content, is quick to point out the user benefits.

To support ad personalization, Mozilla created an internal data system that aggregates user information while stripping out personally identifiable information. Mozilla can track impressions, clicks, and the number of ads a user hides or pins. Its advertising partners are also privy to that data.

It might be that it's only with the new version of Firefox. I'm not sure yet but it might pay not to upgrade when it asks. Also, I haven't yet really tested it out but there might be a decent alternative that will still use your favorite Firefox addons. It's a fork (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fork_%28software_development%29) from Firefox. It's called Palemoon and you can find it here here. (http://www.palemoon.org/) I will be testing this in the near future to see how it is.
