More Reasons to Beware of Coffee

Daily coffee drinking significantly increases the risk for heart disease by boosting homocysteine, an amino acid that causes plaque to build up along blood vessel walls. However, caffeine doesn't seem to be the culprit, as caffeinated tea doesn't have the same effect.

In a study conducted by the National Health Screening Service and other health organizations in Norway, researchers monitored the homocysteine levels of over 16,000 healthy men and women, most of whom drank coffee every day.  After accounting for confounding variables that can affect cardiovascular health, such as smoking and the use of vitamin supplements, the scientists still found a marked association between coffee use and homocysteine in the blood.  The relationship was much stronger than was shown in previous studies linking coffee and blood cholesterol levels.  The study was published in the January 1997 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The Norwegian researchers say with certainty that coffee consumption is one of the biggest determiners of homocysteine in the blood.    --Vegetarian Times, March 1997.

Coffee Wreaks Havoc on Homocysteine

It appears that coffee itself, not just the caffeine in it, contributes to high homocysteine levels, a factor that has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. In a study that compared the homocysteine-raising effects of caffeine, coffee and a placebo, caffeine increased homocysteine by 5%, while coffee raised levels 11% higher than the placebo --American Journal of Clinical Nuitrition, 2002; 76: 1244-1248.

Giving up coffee has been shown to significantly reduce blood levels of total cholesterol and homocysteine--two risk factors for heart attack and stroke. --American Journal of Clinical Nuitrition, 2002; 75; 949-950.

The brains of Alzheimer's patients are full of plaques, tangles of protein that build along with tragic memory loss. Medical researchers are finding that elevated levels of homosteine are linked to a nearly threefold increase in the risk of Alzheimer's. This according to an article in Stroke. --U.S. New & World Report, October 21, 2002.

More Homocysteine Dangers

The high animal protein diet is the source of yet another risk indicator for heart disease--excessive levels of homocysteine. This substance may be even more important than cholesterol levels and may be involved in a large percentage of heart disease cases.

Homocysteine is formed in the body from methionine, an amino acid found in all protein foods, but is two to three times higher in meat, eggs, milk and cheese than in plant protein. As with cholesterol, some homocysteine is needed and utilized by the body, but a dietary overload of methionine in the form of a high animal protein diet produces an overabundance which must be converted to nontoxic compounds by the dietary nuitrients folate, vitamin B-6, and other B-vitamins. If these nutrients are in short supply, as is the case in the average American diet, then homocysteine levels remain high and damage blood vessels leading to heart problems and strokes.

Kilmer S. McCully, M.D., writing in The Homocysteine Revolution, (Keats Publishing, Inc. CT) points out that human populations that are mainly vegetarian take in less methionine than those eating meat and dairy products. This according to the Harvard trained physician and researachers, helps explain why vegetarians are relatively protected against arteriosclerosis compared with those eating largely of meat and dairy products. Plenty of fresh fruits and veggies and whole grains, nuts and seeds--abundant in a correct plant-based diet offer adequate folate and B-6, necessary to recycle homocyestine into harmless breakdown products.

Daily coffee drinking, too, increases the risk of heart disease by boosting homocysteine levels in the blood. The relationship, according the already mentioned Norwegian study was much stronger than was shown in previous studies linking coffee and blood cholesterol levels. A clear dose response curve showed that the more coffee consumed, the higher the homocysteine levels. Smoking further increases these levels, according to the study. --(The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, January 1997).

A Los Angeles judge has determined that coffee companies must carry an ominous cancer warning label because of a chemical produced in the roasting process.

Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle said Wednesday that Starbucks and other companies failed to show that benefits from drinking coffee outweighed any risks. He ruled in an earlier phase of trial that companies hadn't shown the threat from the chemical was insignificant.

Coffee us unhealthy. But, the law suits over it regarding acrylimide do not appear to be very honest.

The American Cancer Society reports the following:

Most of the studies done so far have not found an increased risk of cancer in humans. For some types of cancer, such as kidney, endometrial, and ovarian cancer, the results have been mixed, but there are currently no cancer types for which there is clearly an increased risk related to acrylamide intake.

Bread has acrylamide in it, as do baked potatoes.

Acrylamide can also form in some starchy foods during high-temperature cooking, such as frying, roasting, and baking. Acrylamide forms from sugars and an amino acid that are naturally in food; it does not come from food packaging or the environment.

Well, accurate or not,  one of my employees somehow heard about this, and just today told me that she is giving up coffee.  I wasn't going to discourage her.  ;D

It was the first I'd heard of the chemical.
