Riddle- A woman's name in the Bible

better known as a man's name.

(they both have the same first name)

She was the first woman landowner.

The man's name is very well known.

The man that has this name had a son whose name is the same as an unclean meat.

(Ham)

I need some more clues, please.

Noah

Quote
Num 26:33  And Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters: and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

Quote
Num 27:1  Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.
Num 27:2  And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,
Num 27:3  Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons.
Num 27:4  Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.
Num 27:5  And Moses brought their cause before the LORD.
Num 27:6  And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
Num 27:7  The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.
Num 27:8  And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.
Num 27:9  And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.
Num 27:10  And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father's brethren.
Num 27:11  And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Sybil, you're so fast we might have to take away your resources. Just kidding. I would not  want to have to compete with you in a Bible bowl.

I'm curious. Did you know that one off the top of your head?

I did not know that one - Buz. That is why I love these Bible Bowls. Ever learning. It was through Sabbath afternoon Bible Bowls that I learned quite a bit when first a Christian.

Re: Noah, I read of the daughters' situation with no inheritance but did not commit their names to memory. I knew of these daughters as a group appealing to Moses rather than individually. And, isn't God just, fair and righteous?

While I am waiting on laundry  ::) here's one. I love the story. Details are in the four-volume series: The Prophetic Faith of our Fathers by Froom, which are readable online, by the way. http://www.adventistarchives.org/documents.asp?CatID=79 What a set of books! Anyway ... here goes:

This man was an early pioneer of the Advent movement after reading and listening to William Miller. He has a "claim to fame" among us, but I'll save that for later.

He got chilled.

I haven't had time to look but it seems to me that James White was chilled and became sick.

Yes, he did. In the early days of the movement many men worked to true exhaustion that ultimately lead to early deaths and he was one. The brother we are looking at died through an illness contracted through over-exposure when conducting three consecutive baptismal services one cold autumn day. With each service he thought he was finished, yet more saints came for baptism. Each time he left the cold river waters a new group would come requesting baptism. He could not refuse and through his willingness to comply, it cost him his life just a few weeks later, which was a few weeks before October 22, 1844.

You know who this man is.

I remember the circumstance but forget who it was. I'm thinking It was Bates.

In 1842 he designed a prophetic chart, thus beginning the use of same in evangelistic meetings.

Yes!

Quote
4. DESIGNS FAMOUS "1843" PROPHETIC CHART.—In 1842
Fitch was still at Haverhill, Massachusetts, as pastor of the
Winter Street Church, which Apollos Hale usually attended.
At this time Fitch, assisted by Hale, designed the famous
"1843" prophetic chart, painted on cloth, which he presented
to the Boston General Conference of May, 1842, of which
Joseph Bates was chairman. Plans were there laid to proclaim
the "Midnight Cry" more vigorously. After the presentation
of the chart, with its graphic symbols and time periods, to the
conference, three hundred lithographed copies were authorized
for use by the Adventist preachers.24 Fitch, in explaining it,
told of his purpose to simplify and integrate the prophecies,
and to make them so plain that whoever saw the prophetic mes-
sage might read and run with it. (Habakkuk 2:2.) That he per-
sonally used a copy is indicated by his allusion to distress over
its loss (but subsequent recovery) while traveling by stage
between towns in Massachusetts.25 (Facsimile reproduction ap-
pears on p. 616.)

9. DEATH FROM PNEUMONIA ON OCTOBER 14, 1844.—But
Fitch did not have much longer to live and labor. He was in
Buffalo, New York, in October, 1844, when a large number of
new believers requested baptism. Others had not yet fully made
up their minds. Arrangements were made, and the company
who were ready went with him to the lake shore and were bap-
tized in the chilly autumn water. A cold wind was blowing as
Fitch started for home in his wet garments—for they had no
protective baptismal robes or waterproof waders in those days.
But just then he was met by another company of tardy candi-
dates, on their way to the lake, who similarly desired baptism.
So, cold as he was, Fitch went back with them and immersed
them. And then came a belated third company who had at last
made their decision. At their request he turned back a second
time, and baptized them also. But Fitch was seriously chilled.

Ill as he was from the effects of this prolonged exposure,
he nevertheless rode several miles the next day in the cold wind
to meet another appointment. This proved too much for him,
and he was stricken down with fatal illness, doubtless pneu-
monia, which speedily brought on his death at the early age of
thirty-nine. His last triumphant words on October 14, shortly
before the day of expectation, were, "I believe in the promises
of God." It may confidently be said that none of the Adventist
preachers was more widely loved than Charles Fitch. Coura-
geous and resourceful, helpful and hopeful, he interpreted the
love of God in word and deed, in the light of the second ad-
vent, to the thousands to whom he ministered.

What a dedicated man of God!

Was this quick enough? ;D

Here are the starting clues -

He was:

*Sent to America alone at 16 years old from Ireland
*Originally an apprentice to a rancher in Nebraska to become a cattleman
*Even at a young age he was praised for his character, industry and thoughtfulness
*Attended tent meetings at 18 and was baptized as a Seventh-day Adventist
*Two weeks after his baptism he became a "tent master" and went to work giving Bible studies
*That same year he became a preacher, holding meetings in a country schoolhouse
*Decided as a result of his meetings that he needed more education before he could become a full-time evangelist
*Moved to Battle Creek to work, get treatments for a persistent cough and attend college
*Loved Bible and history
*Met Ellen White for the first time at the Minneapolis GC Session in 1888
*Ellen White took him in to live at her home for awhile where he learned a lot directly from her
*At Ellen White's insistence, he traveled with S.N. Haskell around the world looking for locations for mission stations
*When he returned from the trip he became the secretary of the Foreign Mission Board and head of the Bible and History department at Emmanuel Missionary College - where he would eventually become dean of the College shortly after it moved from Battle Creek to Berrien Springs

Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. Psalm 119:18

Yay! That was a tough one until I placed one of your hints into Google and there it was.

I assume this is the same Magan of "Magan and Spaulding Collection" of manuscripts.
