Finally!!! A sympathetic ear!!!     We love bears, we just love our fruit trees and doors better!  And my tent and my ice chest!!   They are not picky about what they destroy around dinner time.

I stand corrected.  :) Daddy longlegs get tossed outside at our house. They are on the "no kill" list.

There are enough of them outside. They like our bathroom - it is a kill and flush zone.

climbed up into the only remaining bearing fruit tree and broke most of the branches while getting his lunch.

That's going too far.  >:(  Arm yourselves with giant zucchini and chase that bear away! Although I would understand if you thought buckshot would be safer.

The bears are cute

Sure they are!  As long as they're at a safe distance!   ;)

I am with Vicki and Sybil, a zucchini is not enough when face to face with a bear. They are very strong and very fast. And, they get hungry at this time of year as they prepare for hibernation. They eat humans as well as berries. They are not picky eaters. When the devil tempted Jesus to "jump", Jesus did not. He was not presumptuous. We ought to not be either. There are precautions we can take, just as did David when he met Goliath. He could have gone out there and relied upon God to take care of Goliath, but that would have been presumption to ask God to do what David could do. God made sure the rock landed in the right place.

We also, must throw the rock if we have to. God will guide it. David killed both lions and bears. I know they were there first, but it did not matter. They were going to kill and they must be stopped. Stop thinking about the zucchini for defense!  Buckshot seems much more intelligent and appears to be in harmony with what we know from Scripture. And, it may be that the sound is enough to scare the bear even if he does not feel the pain of being sprayed with the buckshot.

We do not delight in the death of the wicked, but some of them must die. :(  Soon it will be over and the bear and lion will be friends with us and our lambs!

One more skunk tail (tale.) Yesterday morning, the weather was awfully windy here..rather wild, with winds up to 30 mph. And, Elizabeth had to leave in the dark at 6:00 to get to school at 7. (Normally, she leaves an hour later.) But, after praying, and claiming Matt.27, the winds did abate considerably. So, she was ready to leave, in her white nurse's uniform, looking very professional, when she called to me from the deck, "Grandmother, Ferdy is out here! He just now ran under the car!" So, I grabbed a flashlight, and started to look for him. No Ferdy could we see. I told Elizabeth to stay on the deck, and I would brave the skunk! Now, picture, if you can, this old lady, in her gown and housecoat, down on her hands and knees, looking under the car with the flashlight! A sight to behold! No Ferdy, he evidently had escaped out the other side..so, got Elizabeth in the car, and on her way, and you can believe I had some "thank yous" to whisper to God!
I didn't realize it at the time, because was so concentrating on getting her in the car, but then felt something hurting around my ankles. There was a long piece of rose bush wrapped around both ankles, and the blood was flowing...so had to come in and take care of that..

All of that by 6:00 in the AM. What a way to start the day! But, it all turned out well! God cares! Glad we can laugh over these things in life!

Dora;

LOL, you have to watch those roses. Those nice looking hollyhocks behind you are alot more tame.

We have had winds to 60 mph for two days. As we drove through town today we saw several large roofs with shingles being removed by the wind. At home everything outside it would seem was tipped over and the wind removed both my tarps from the wood piles. This reminds me of the winds of strife approaching. So far we have a safe haven here. The most peaceful days are still our blessing.

:D What a way to start the day! I am happy for both of you that Ferdy wasn't still there.

Your story reminds me of my MIL's 70th birthday party. She was escorted into a back bedroom so she couldn't see the set-up of the Hawaiian luau themed party. Her granddaughter was with her, but stepped out the door while grandma changed into a new flowered frock for the occassion. When she came back in, no grandmother! She was found a few minutes later hiding under the bed.  :D Not many 70 yo's would do that!

CP, thank you for commiserating with me re roses. These are NOT ordinary roses, and since you are somewhat familiar with this part of the country, maybe you have seen them. Some years ago, a neighbor had the bright idea of importing some multiflora rose bushes and setting them close together to create fences for their cattle. Well, it did not work too well, even though they planted them close together, and the trunk of the rose bush gets quite large, they finally had to build fences instead. But, then, the whole country side is stuck with these  rosebushes that are hard to kill even with something like Round UP. NO, we did not plant any, but evidently, birds are very good seed carriers, so we have them growing in different places, and they are like a plague!! This one is in the fence, and a long piece of it had evidently broken off in the wind.

O! Yes, I like the hollyhocks MUCH better!! The weather has been so warm here, they think it is Spring.

No, Vicki, this lady would not hide from her birthday party! My kids usually plan something nice and make quite a thing over my birthdays, but, I would not hide under the bed, even to play a joke!

Yes, glad Ferdy was not there, too! Not that time! He might have gotten upset with all the running around, and lights shining in the dark, and forgotten to act like a gentleman! Tonight, Petunia visited without Ferdy, but Foxy does not like her and chased her, so she left some scent.

Have mercy, Dora! Bless your poor ankles! I am so sorry!

As for the hollyhocks? They are probably thrilled to begin a second blooming season because of the parent stock only got one chance around here!

Would you believe that my flower bed with zinnias, cockscomb, balloon flowers and mums are still blooming well? No frost so far..just a dusting one morning, but did not hurt anything. The flowers sure did soak up the rain yesterday, they looked so fresh today, and yesterday we saw a very late, lingering black swallowtail butterfly. It now 64º at 9:55 PM. But, one of these days, it will soon change, seems like when a month changes, so does the weather. Temp is supposed to drop this week.

BTW, my ankles are fine, now, used some Neosporin on them, and did not bother me again. Yes, the new hollyhock growth looks good! Last winter, there was some green remained all through the cold months.

I've seen Mink here and there over the years, but this was unprecedented.  I was sitting in my car this morning, waiting for my son to come out of the house, and my daughter said "there's a mink.  It just went under the Rhododendron."  I  jumped out in time to see the creature scurry out from under the bush and go behind the house.  A minute later it came around the corner of the house and peeked out at us.  Usually they hang around ponds and streams.  Not sure what it was doing so close to our house, but it was nice to see.  And my daughter said that she had seen one nearby a few days ago, as well.  They wouldn't be there if there wasn't something to eat.  I'm just not sure what it is.

This could explain why we don't have titmice at our feeder anymore.   :(  And possibly why we aren't catching as many mice in our traps this fall.  ;D

Yesterday on a morning walk we discovered hoof prints along the front of our property. It must have been a mare and a colt. Last night I couldn't sleep and was up & about when the dog gave some warning barks, like there was an intruder. I should have looked, but I figured it was too dark to see anything and probably wasn't anything anyway - never has been before. This morning there was fresh horse manure near the end of our driveway, and horse prints near the house. If I had only looked...  :(

Not many people get horse manure delivered free of charge.  ::)

I'm assuming they have been scared down from the mountains since helicopters are out rounding up wild horses. There has been a herd of about 7 mostly buckskins and palaminos a few miles from here. They are magnificent.

Rushing to leave the house the other morning, I raced down the stairs and these little beasts were in my yard, just next to the house! What a shock! At first the brown fur startled me - bears? Nope! I raced back up the stairs to get the camera and my glasses  ::) and to my great delight there was a small herd of cattle. The lead cow wore a bell!

I took the time to watch and to talk to them. How gentle and docile they were. They finally moseyed north, crossed over the creek and had a picnic on the other side.

Then I remembered. Cattle grazing rights are still on the books in these parts, dating back to the land grants. We have not seen them in several years so I had to reregister this great pleasure. Well, there was one negative: when they entered the driveway, they took the way to the swale and the newly planted autumn sage. They didn't eat them, but they walked all around them dislodging a few. And now, some of my seeds for next year are pressed a little deeper in the soil.  ;D

I've always wondered how the owners find their cattle when they let them wonder like that.
