"Ravaged state braces for new onslaught

Miami: Hurricane Wilma has strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane as the season's record-equalling 21st tropical storm headed for the Gulf of Mexico on a path towards storm-weary Florida.

Top sustained winds of more than 250kph were recorded yesterday..."

"Strongest ever storm churns toward US coast

Hurricane Wilma became the fiercest Atlantic hurricane ever seen as it churned toward western Cuba and Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, and threatened densely populated Florida after having already killed 10 people in Haiti...A US Air Force reconnaissance plane measured maximum sustained winds of 280 kmh, with higher gusts, the US National Hurricane Centre said."

Clive I think you should know that most of us in the US have no idea what you are talking about when you speak of wind speeds in anything other than miles per hours.  :)Yes I'm really poking fun at us, not the rest of the world. We've just never caught on to a simpler system.

Guess I am one of those thick in the mud people that want to stay at miles per hour. That I understand, the other is all Greek to me.

Simpler I am not sure, different for sure.

Actually am I correct in that the terms used by the world is less than in miles per hour??

It's more for Kilometers. It's something like 2.2 or something per mile, that's why the storm shows 250kph, when the actual sustained winds here were 185 at their strongest. It's also the strongest storm in terms of barometric pressure. It has the lowest pressure ever recorded since they started measuring in the 1800's.

It's an amazing storm really, if it weren't so deadly.

I don't want to change the topic of this thread. But I have to agree with brother Richard here.

The metric system is much simpler. Everything is based on 10.

1 KM = 1000m

1 mile = 5280ft

Try converting "cups" to ounces. And if you're talking about "ounces" are you talking about weight or volume? In the metric system is very clear.

Where the US failed in trying to convert to metric was that we were so concerned about conversion formulas instead of just doing it. When I go to another country I don't care what the speed is in MPH, I just drive more or less at the speed posted on the speed limit sign. Whereas in the US we'd be geting out our formulas and trying to find out what the speed would be in MPH.

Back to the storm. Sounds like it is moving very slowly and the resort areas of Mexico are really getting pounded. This storms ties the record for storms in a single season.

We just broke the record and are in the Greek alphabet with the named storm Alpha.

It is formed down below Cuba and is expected to follow a similar track to Wilma.

Alpha? It's not doing much...yet. Cuba is evacuating some areas. I'll try to post more later.

It may sound Greek but it is more French if my memory is correct.

We have had the metric system out here now for about 40 years and at first it was very hard to catch onto. It was introduced slowly so it was not too bad.

If you all remember that 100 kph is very close to 60 mph the conversion is not too bad to understand.

Any system based on 10 is far easier that a system based on 12.

Compared to a rugby match I'd think a hurricane would be a walk in the park  :)

It is rather thought provoking that both hurricane Katrina and Wilma foiled big "gay days".

WorldNetDaily Oct. 24
"Despite the attempt to dodge the impact of Hurricane Wilma by changing the dates for the annual Fantasy Fest, the storm has deluged any hopes for the homosexual debauchery party this week, and could force a complete cancellation.
For now, Fantasy Fest officials are holding out hope the celebration which draws upward of 60,000 visitors to the Florida Keys will still take place."

We already know that katrina stopped a "celebration" twice that size in New Orleans.

Now there is considerable questioning on the validity of this --
Like why did the poor section get hit the worst while the French quarter received only light damage etc.
And what about other disasters, are we going to pin the perversity of some as the reason for the destruction of many.

Yet, the question looms large --
as the reports of disasters become larger and more frequent --
is God's protective Spirit being withdrawn because of presistant rebellious sin?

It's amazing how so many resort areas are being hit. Cozumel, the Keys, Miami, now New York, Maine with the "Perfect Storm"...

When you look at Miami and the other Florida cities that were hit unexpectedly, you can see why Mrs.White warned of getting out of the cities. Three mile lines for propane tanks for those who have never used them, using them to cook in their condos, waiting for a hot meal, no air conditioning. Having all hope of this being temporary taken away from them by forecasts of this being a 30 year cycle. Then being told that there are two to three more storms on the horizon and even if they aren't 3 and 4 levels, a slow moving Cat 1 that hovers could be absolutely devastating now.

One has to wonder if any of these areas will recover at all.

I have to say, if I was in one of the badly hit areas (if I hadn't left already) I would move completely out of state at this point. There is no hope for change.

But people remain, in those horrendous lines and maybe they can't leave now, which is a terrible thought, but one that we were warned about.

I have no doubt that God considers you to be one of His friends; otherwise He would not trust you with so many crosses, sufferings and humiliations. Crosses are God's means of drawing souls closer to Himself.

=============================================

Our home has been damaged by falling trees and water caused by Rita. We were without power for almost two weeks. Hurricanes and tropical storms are just a part of life here near the Texas coast. Would I leave? Never, unless God directed me to do so!!

I do not know how many storms I have been through in my life. One killed over 600 one night when I was six. They died down in the early 70's, but are now coming back.

As a Child, I remember the old-timers talking about cycles in the weather that would last 20-30 years. When there are a lot of hurricanes, there will be a lot of extremely cold winters. Galveston Bay has frozen over several times since records have been kept.

God did direct us to leave in the end times Brother Cop. Not in the extreme weather cycles, which I understand this is. If it didn't fit into the greater scheme of things with all the other things that are falling into place for the last days, I would agree, maybe ( I still think there are issues with insurance paying for houses to be rebuilt over and over in some areas.) We are told to move out of the cities and that the coastal areas will be destroyed and submerged in the last days, so it would not be a good idea I would think to stay in these areas.

But each one must prayerfully do what they feel is right.

So glad you are safe Brother Cop!
