More Than a Million Without Electricity in NC

North Carolina's first brush with winter has left a lot of people in the cold and in the dark.
More than a million people are without power after a severe ice storm brought trees and tree limbs down on ice-laden power lines.

Snow began falling yesterday morning in the western half of the state, before turning to sleet and rain as it traveled northeast. Freezing rain is expected to continue into the day, tapering off around midday.

Icy conditions overnight had the few drivers on the roads this morning dodging downed limbs. In Raleigh, commuters were moving downed trees and branches themselves to try to get to work.

Duke Power says 660,000 of its customers are without power. Of those, 145,000 are in Charlotte and 59,000 are in Durham.

Carolina Power and Light reports 462,000 customers without service, 360,000 of them in the Research Triangle.

The North Carolina Electric Co-Ops, which provide service to rural customers in 93 counties, says it has 144,000 outages.
