Earthquake kills at least 72 in Kyrgyzstan
Staff and agencies
22 October, 2008

The 6.6-magnitude quake near the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan hit the remote village of Nura hard, bringing down dozens of buildings and injuring more than 100 people in addition to the confirmed deaths, Emergency Situations Minister Kamchybek Tashiyev said.

Later Monday, Health Ministry spokeswoman Yelena Bayalinova said the death toll was 72.

Tashiyev said a helicopter was ferrying the most seriously injured to hospitals in the nearest sizable city, the southern regional center of Osh, more than 60 miles away. The emergency minister said the helicopters would return to collect more of the injured.

The 6.6-magnitude temblor was centered in Kyrgyzstan and was followed by a 5.1-magnitude quake, the U.S. Geological Survey said. But the Kyrgyz Emergency Situations Ministry said the first quake was centered in Tajikistan.

Rogozhin said Sunday‘s initial 6.6 shock was followed by a series of aftershocks, but could not say whether it was linked to a pair of earthquakes that jolted the capital of Chinese-ruled Tibet and surrounding areas Monday, killing 30 people and causing hundreds of houses to collapse.

A POWERFUL earthquake has struck southwest Pakistan before dawn today, killing at least 170 people, destroying mud homes and sending survivors screaming into the streets in panic.

At least eight villages were badly hit by the 6.4-magnitude quake, local police and officials said, warning the death toll could rise as rescue workers reached villages in the remote mountainous region bordering Afghanistan.

Dilawar Kakar, the mayor of the historic hill town of Ziarat,  said the death toll had risen to 170, while about 400 people in the area were injured.

Most  houses were hit either in the initial quake or by repeated aftershocks, one of which the US Geological Survey measured at a magnitude of 6.2, Mr Kakar said.

Schools and hospitals were also damaged, he said.

"The relief work continued until late evening and we have recovered almost all victims from the rubble. Debris have been removed and we believe there may not be more people trapped there,'' he said.

"We have buried around 130 people in the affected villages while other bodies have been sent to their native towns.''

Earlier Khushal Khan, spokesman for the revenue minister of Baluchistan province, Zamarak Khan, said local people had told him about 6000 people have been made homeless and in one case, 29 members of the same family died.

Strong 6.5 earthquake strikes China
From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!

Monday, November 10, 2008

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake with magnitude of 6.5 has struck China. Xinhua, one of China's main news agencies, reports the quake at a magnitude of 6.3.

According to the USGS, the quake was centered 55 kilometers (35 miles) East, Southeast of Da Qaidam, Qinghai province and was reported at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles). It struck at approximately 9:22 a.m local time on Monday morning.

Although there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries, the USGS says damage in the area could be "very heavy". The shaking was felt as far away as Golmud, and Xining, where witnesses say buildings shook, but there was no damage.

The Da Qaidam region is an area of China where there are several launch sites for DF-4 nuclear missiles. At least two nuclear missiles are reported to be stored in the Da Qaidam Basin and were deployed there in 1998. Da Qaidam is one of five locations throughout China where launch sites exist. There is no word if the sites suffered any damage from the quake.

Earthquake Swarm Continues Near Puerto Rico; Could Be Source of US East Coast Tsunami
By Mitch Battros - Earth Changes Media Dec 2, 2008 - 7:04:19 PM
http://bunik.blogspot.com/2008/12/earthquake-swarm-continues-near-puerto.html
Wednesday, December 03, 2008

A swarm of earthquakes has been ongoing for 30 days with no end in site. They are occurring just off the Puerto Rico northeast coastline. This is a known subduction zone just as the Cascadia subduction zone and the Sumatra subduction zone.

Scientists are now collecting data that could help better predict an event which would have devastating consequences as the result of a tsunami hitting the Caribbean region and the US east coastline.

If confirmed by analysis of the recently acquired ocean-bottom seismometers (OBS) data, the locations of the tremors at the plate interface may have profound implications about the capability of the Puerto Rico Trench to generate large earthquakes. Additionally, the tectonic setting of the Puerto Rico Trench is sometimes compared to that of the Sumatra subduction zone, the site of the earthquake that triggered the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004. This similarity has caused great interest in the assessment of potential tsunami hazard to the United States east coast and the northeastern Caribbean from a large subduction-zone earthquake along the Puerto Rico Trench.

Five ocean-bottom seismometers (OBSes) were deployed on March 8, 2008, by researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Each OBS is a self-contained data-acquisition system that free-falls to the ocean floor, where it converts motions of the sea floor into electrical signals that are recorded digitally. The scientists deployed short-period OBSes that record frequencies from about 2 to 80 Hz. The instruments were picked up on September 3, 2008, after spending 6 months collecting data at water depths of more than 5,000 m.

The area northeast of Puerto Rico is characterized by frequent swarms of seismic tremors lasting a week or two at a time. One such swarm in 2001 included three earthquakes with moment magnitudes of 5.5 to 6. Although the cause of these recurring swarms is unknown, a study of earthquake hypocenters (points where earthquake ruptures begin), using data from OBSes deployed by the USGS in 2005, suggests that the tremors originate along the subduction zone between the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates. Because of the geography of the northeastern Caribbean, earthquakes in this region cannot be accurately located by using land stations alone—hence the need to deploy ocean-bottom seismometers.

TRONA--An earthquake “swarm” that’s been rattling portions of San Bernardino and Inyo (California) counties won’t settle down.

It’s been a robust sequence with fairly large events in the magnitude four range.

Seismologist Anthony Guarino at Caltech says the series began November 23rd just north of Trona. “It could continue for days or even weeks and it could stop within the next couple of hours.”

There has been no reported damage in the immediate area of the epicenters along the Ash Hill Fault. That’s part of the more extensive Panamint Valley Fault System on the south edge of Death Valley.

5.1 earthquake strikes Los Angeles to San Diego

Moderate 5.1 quake strikes Mojave Desert east of L.A on Friday night along the Lavic Lake Fault, about 120 miles east of Los Angeles. The moderate quake occurred at 8:18 p.m. near Ludlow, in San Bernardino County,  east of Barstow, & could be felt from Los Angeles to San Diego. This quake was just a few miles away from where the 7.1 magnitude Hector Mine quake hit in 1999.

Three minor earthquakes rattle California in 36 hours
www.chinaview.cn 2008-12-08 09:19:40

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Three minor earthquakes and a large aftershock have rattled parts of California in the 36 hours after a moderate, magnitude-5.1 quake hit an area outside Los Angeles Friday night, authorities said on Sunday.

There is no immediate indication that the quakes, which occurred hundreds of miles apart, are related. But some of them were felt in Los Angeles, the U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS) said.

The seismic weekend began with a magnitude 5.1-earthquake at 8:18 p.m. Friday. The epicenter was placed 117 miles (about 187 kilometers) northeast of downtown Los Angeles, near the tiny Mojave Desert town of Ludlow.

That quake rocked nearby Barstow and the Apple Valley area, and was felt by some people in the L.A. basin.

On Sunday, a magnitude 3.0 aftershock struck the area at 1:07 p. m., rocking the same area jolted Friday.

Also on Sunday, a magnitude 3.5-earthquake apparently rocked the seafloor near Anacapa Island at 7:37 a.m., 66 miles (about 106kilometers) west of Los Angeles. More than four hours after the quake, a magnitude 3.1 temblor struck a geologically-active desert valley 170 miles (about 272 kilometers) northeast of the Los Angeles Civic Center.

At 8:07 a.m. Saturday, a magnitude 3.0 quake was measured with an epicenter 6 miles southeast of Olancha, a small town 140 miles (224 kilometers) north of Los Angeles. This quake was about 65 miles (104 kilometers) northwest of the Friday-night epicenter.

No injuries or damage were reported in any of the shakers.

Data about the smaller quakes have yet to be reviewed by scientists, and their sizes and epicenters have been calculated by USGS computers.

Yellowstone Earthquake Swarm Puzzles Scientists

By LiveScience Staff Source

The predicted effects of a Yellowstone super eruption.

A swarm of small earthquakes in Yellowstone National Park is the most intense measured there in years, leaving scientists puzzled.

The region is known for such swarms — 1,000 to 2,000 quakes occur annually in the park. Yellowstone's 10,000 geysers and hot springs, including the Old Faithful Geyser, may be the result of this geologic activity.

But the latest shaking is notable for the number of tiny temblors and their intensity, according to a statement yesterday from the University of Utah, where scientists monitor seismic activity in Yellowstone. (Yellowstone is located mostly in the northwest corner of Wyoming.)

The largest of the earthquakes was a magnitude 3.9 at 10:15 pm MST on Dec. 27, a day after the swarm began. The sequence has included nine events of magnitude 3 to 3.9 and approximately 24 of magnitude 2 to 3 at the time of this release. A total of more than 250 events large enough to be located have occurred in this swarm.

"Scientists cannot identify any causative fault or other feature without further analysis," according to the statement.

The accumulation of many things which minister to lust and ambition has brought upon the world the judgment of God. When in difficulty, philosophers and the great men of earth desire to satisfy their minds without appealing to God. They ventilate their philosophy in regard to the heavens and the earth, accounting for plagues, pestilences, epidemics, earthquakes, and famines, by their supposed science.  {SpTEd 8.1}

Earthquake Swarms in Australia

Quote
Tiny WA town hit by 100 earthquakes

The Western Australian Wheatbelt town of Beacon has been hit by about 100 earthquakes over the past month.

Geoscience Australia says the biggest measured almost five on the richer scale, while others were too small to record.

The small town of Beacon is about 300 kilometres north-east of Perth.

Seismologists say the phenomenon, known as an earthquake swarm, is highly unusual, but has been moving through the wheatbelt for the past decade.

With earthquake swarms happening in this region, and with it being at the southern end of the San Andreas Fault Line, it is feared a larger quake could devastate LA in a few days time. Here's part of the story:

Moderate quake strikes Salton Sea, California
9:50 AM | March 24, 2009

Another moderate earthquake struck today near the San Andreas fault in Imperial County, seismologists said.

The magnitude 4.8 quake hit about 4:55 a.m. two miles south of Bombay Beach on the eastern shore of the Salton Sea, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website. The quake had occurred at a depth of 3.5 miles.

"The only interesting thing about this one is that it occurred at the end of the San Andreas fault," said Kate Hutton, a seismologist at Caltech. "Bombay Beach is considered the southern end of the San Andreas fault. The last swarm of earthquakes similar to this was in 2001. We're watching it closely. We'll be analyzing everything."

There have been at least 23 aftershocks, the largest a 3.1, which struck at 6:52  a.m. in the same area, Hutton said. No damage was reported in the thinly populated area.
