"Behold, the days come, saith the LORD GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD." (Amos 8:11)

Blessings to all as we study God's Word this week.

Early Writings of Ellen G. White, page 281, 282

Chapter Title: Spiritual Gifts

"As Jesus moved out of the most holy place, I heard the tinkling of the bells upon His garment; and as He left, a cloud of darkness covered the inhabitants of the earth. There was then no mediator between guilty man and an offended God. While Jesus had been standing between God and guilty man, a restraint was upon the people; but when He stepped out from between man and the Father, the restraint was removed and Satan had entire control of the finally impenitent. It was impossible for the plagues to be poured out while Jesus officiated in the sanctuary; but as His work there is finished, and His intercession closes, there is nothing to stay the wrath of God, and it breaks with fury upon the shelterless head of the guilty sinner, who has slighted salvation and hated reproof. In that fearful time, after the close of Jesus' mediation, the saints were living in the sight of a holy God without an intercessor. Every case was decided, every jewel numbered. Jesus tarried a moment in the outer apartment of the heavenly sanctuary, and the sins which had been confessed while He was in the

281
most holy place were placed upon Satan, the originator of sin, who must suffer their punishment.

Then I saw Jesus lay off His priestly attire and clothe Himself with His most kingly robes. Upon His head were many crowns, a crown within a crown. Surrounded by the angelic host, He left heaven. The plagues were falling upon the inhabitants of the earth. Some were denouncing God and cursing Him. Others rushed to the people of God and begged to be taught how they might escape His judgments. But the saints had nothing for them. The last tear for sinners had been shed, the last agonizing prayer offered, the last burden borne, the last warning given. The sweet voice of mercy was no more to invite them. When the saints, and all heaven, were interested for their salvation, they had no interest for themselves. Life and death had been set before them. Many desired life, but made no effort to obtain it. They did not choose life, and now there was no atoning blood to cleanse the guilty, no compassionate Saviour to plead for them, and cry, "Spare, spare the sinner a little longer." All heaven had united with Jesus, as they heard the fearful words, "It is done. It is finished." The plan of salvation had been accomplished, but few had chosen to accept it. And as mercy's sweet voice died away, fear and horror seized the wicked. With terrible distinctness they heard the words, "Too late! too late!"
Those who had not prized God's Word were hurrying to and fro, wandering from sea to sea, and from the north to the east, to seek the Word of the Lord. Said the angel, "They shall not find it. There is a famine in the land; not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but for hearing the words of the Lord. What would they not give for one word of approval from God! but no, they must hunger and thirst on. Day after day have they slighted salvation,

282
prizing earthly riches and earthly pleasure higher than any heavenly treasure or inducement. They have rejected Jesus and despised His saints. The filthy must remain filthy forever."

"'By their fruits ye shall know them' (Matt. 7:20). Just as the usefulness of a tree is judged by its fruit, so shall THE LIVES OF PEOPLE be judged (Emphasis mine throughout). God is not impressed with pretension or profession but by a life that REFLECTS HIS CHARACTER and produces fruit worthy of His name. Indeed, there is no room in God's kingdom for those who profess spirituality without producing any spiritual fruit. 'Not everyone who says to me "Lord, Lord," will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven' (Matt. 7:21, NRSV)....

"...The Sabbath, given to remind Israel of their Creator-Redeemer (Gen. 2:1-3; Ezek. 20:20), had become a religious ritual. And those who kept it waited for it to end so they could return to their wicked life (Amos 8:5). Instead of being a day of holiness and special fellowship with God, the Sabbath had become a day THAT INTERRUPTED THEIR ACTIVITIES. When formalism becomes a substitute for genuine religion, when materialistic prosperity dulls spiritual sensitivity, when self-indulgence cares neither for moral uprightness nor social justice, then THE SOUL IS ROTTEN and comes under divine judgment....

"The concept of the remnant at times causes people to believe they are morally and spiritually superior. It also causes them to think God will overlook their sins. However, the biblical concept of the remnant holds those who are part of that remnant to a higher standard of accountability. It summons them to A HIGHER PLANE OF LIVING, and puts them under closer scrutiny. Israel's failure to heed the prophetic word left no alternative but judgment.

"The judgment is sweeping in its range and terminal in its effects. Songs shall become wails. Death shall visit every community. The land shall quake. Floods shall drown the nation, and darkness shall descend at noon. Feasting shall turn into mourning, while lamentations shall be heard throughout the land (Amos 8:8-10). All these describe the happenings of 'that day' a bitter day (8:4, 9, 11). To those of us living in the end time, the prophet's warnings are a reminder that if we persist in our Laodicean ways, the fate that awaited Israel AWAITS US, AS WELL" (Adult Sabbath School Quarterly, Teacher's Edition, pp. 129, 131, 133).

Praise God for His grace that will keep us. Let us prepare now for the days just ahead! Let us walk with the footmen so that we may soon run with the horses.  :)

Jesus receives His reward when we reflect His character, the fruits of the Spirit......We deny Jesus His reward when we do not.

"If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you. Then how can you contend with horses. and if in the land of peace. In which you trusted, they wearied you. Then how will you do in the floodplain of the Jordan." (Jer.12:5)

I heard a serman preached on this verse by our minister at the time who ended up baptizing Theresa and myself. Every Sabbath was a time of real refreshing where you knew that God's Word would be opened. I was told by our conference pres. that we had the best minister in South Queensland. I now believe that to be 100 percent right.

Most of us face very little persecution but one day it will come and if we have not been faithful when times are easy it will be that much harder when things get tough.

Our memory verse said that there would be a famine in the land, not of bread or water but of hearing the words of the Lord.

How do you think this would be possible and do we have any Biblical support to believe such a time could occour?

"Behold your house is left unto you desolate." Matthew 23:38.

As I sadly discern the "Tom Fool-ery" that is occurring in many of our churches, both here and abroad, it is quite obvious to me that the "famine in the land" of hearing the Words of the Lord has already begun to occur.

Very true Brother Crawford, I also see from the past experiance of king Saul when he went looking for the Lord but could not find Him. Turning to witchcraft to find an answer.
I believe that the devil is conditioning our minds to accept such things by having out young people, and some not so young caught up with books like Harry Potter, which makes out that witchcraft is fun and harmless.

Amos condemned the Israelites for cheating their customers and for believing they were holy because they performed religious rituals and kept God's law.

It is possible for us today to have fallen into the same trap?

Whenever I take the lesson at Sabbath School I like to spend time bringing the lesson to our time and applying what the Bible says about it to ourselves.

Look at the above question and consider how it could impact on opur lives and the Church.

"Amos condemned the Israelites for cheating their customers and for believing they were holy because they performed religious rituals and kept God's law.

"Is it possible for us today to have fallen into the same trap?"

In response to the above, the Adult Sabbath School Quarterly, Teacher's Edition, on page 128, offers the following:

"These verses [Amos 8:4-6] reek with one of the greatest and most common spiritual deceptions ever conjured up in Satan's brew of demonic deceptions: religious formalism cloaking abuse of the most basic religious principles. No doubt these people felt spiritually superior to those who didn't keep the Sabbath or observe the feasts as strictly as they did. After all, because they were observing these religious festivals, these folk thought they were holy and thus didn't need to worry about little things like honesty, greed, or helping the poor.

"These people wanted the Sabbath to end so they could immediately get back to cheating their customers...."

1. "No doubt these people felt spiritually superior to those who didn't keep the Sabbath...."

This is one of the charges leveled today against members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Many of other faiths feel that many in this church have a SUPERIORITY COMPLEX and think that we are more than anyone else in the Eyes of God because we keep the Sabbath as opposed to other Christians. As this and other SS lessons point out: just because we keep the Sabbath IS NOT going to save anyone. We are on the road to salvation when WE DEMONSTRATE IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVING that we have put on the Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 13:14) BY PRACTICING the Christlike principles of Love (all Ten Commandments), Honesty ("Thou shall not steal"), Truthfulness ("Thou shall not bear false witness...."), and all other Christian virtues in the Bible as we interact with God and our fellow man.

2. "...these folks thought they were holy and didn't need to worry about little things...."

There is ONLY ONE WAY we can be made Holy. And that is through Him WHO IS HOLY: JESUS CHRIST. As a result, it behooves us to study VERY, VERY CAREFULLY the Life of Christ and WHAT HE DID as He interacted with human beings during His sojourn on this earth and RELIGIOUSLY copy that Holy and Righteous Example (1 Peter 2:21) in our own lives. For there is NO OTHER NAME [OR WAY] UNDER HEAVEN given unto men whereby we are to be saved (Acts 4:12).

Last week when we studied the "Plumb Line" we learnt that it is His righteiusness and we will never measure up through our own efforts and good works. This week we have seen that we must feed our minds upon the Word of God or the fruit we produce will rotten and will detrmine where we stand in the judgement.
