Nature provides many wonderful lessons for each one, whether we're young or older.

It is our desire that each one becomes acquainted with the Creator, for we can learn much from the lessons He has for us.

In this thread, we will have questions, some more difficult than others. And there will be answers too.     :)

What is another name for "pussy willows"?

Early in the spring, before the leaves unfold, willow flowers emerge from their buds. They are long and round and covered with a thick coat of silky silver-white hair. These "CATKINS" seem to resemble tiny kittens climbing up the twig...."kin-to-a-cat". The fuzz of the  pussy willow acts as insulation to protect them from freezing. Later the catkins develop into long drooping clusters that are shaped like a cat's tail.

Why is it so difficult to grow vigorous shrubs and flowers on the NORTH side of a house?
The NORTH side of a building is the shady side. Few plants do well in total shade, and thus they grow slowly, poorly and become long and leggy in an effort to reach more light.

What does the name "Lagomorpha" refer to? The rabbit and hare group.
(I'll talk more about this later)

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: Is there hidden beauty to be found in YOUR daily mission?

As we go about our daily work week after week, our minds and our eyes often become dulled and bored with the natural world around us. We may note in passing that spring is arriving or that the leaves are falling, but our senses are not sharp. HOW MUCH WE MISS BY ALLOWING OURSELVES TO BECOME SO LAZY!

Isn't it true that we see things that we want to see and overlook what we wish to forget?

We may overlook discarded furniture and toys at the side of the garage. But this will be THE FIRST thing a visitor will see.

Hopefully the remainder of our home will not be judged by that accumulation--something we may have overlooked for months.

Inquiring eyes and curious imaginations are valuable to those of us who are nature explorers AND who can discard our fog-covered glasses and try to find surprises. It is all a matter of seeing what we look at.

HOW AND WHEN DID THE POISON GET INTO MUSHROOMS?

The Creator certainly didn't put poison in mushrooms, but Satan is a manipulator of nature. he caused it to appear, along with thorns and poson ivy.

HOW DO THE EARTHWORMS GET INTO THE RAIN BARREL UNDER THE BARN'S DOWNSPOUT? (Does it rain worms?)

No matter how convincing it may look, earthworms CANNOT COME FROM THE SKY.However, when a wooden barrel stands empty and the boards become dry, they shrink and cracks appear between them. When the barrel starts to fill with water, the worms which live under it are suddenly flooded out. They crawl upward to find air and enter the barrel through the cracks. When the the wood of the barrel swells again and the cracks disappear, they are trapped there.

ANSWERS TO 45 Questions (continued)

#7. Why does a tree eventually die if a wire is left around its trunk?

Answer: As a tree grows, it increases in diameter. A wire wrapped around it does NOT stretch, and eventually the cambium layer is severed and the tree dies.
The cambium layer is a thin sheath of cells  from which the wood and the bark originate. This is the area of ACTIVE cell division.

#8 Why would a male robin dart at a shiny hubcap?
A> He may see his own reflection in a shiny hubcap, and THINKING it a rival male is trying to infringe on his territory, he will fight to drive it off.

#9. What comes to mind when pondering this statement: "The stomata (leaf's mouths) are vital avenues of exchange..." Also read Jeremiah 17:7-8

A. People's mouths are also vital avenues of exchange.

#10. A Matter to Ponder: When you are on top of a mountain, WHY is the sky such a deep, dark, almost blue-black?

A.Since the short ultraviolet rays of the spectrum are most easily scattered by particles in the atmosphere, the sky looks blue. At higher elevations, there are fewer particles in the air to scatter the blue rays, hence it looks dark blue, sometimes almost blue-black.

#11. What happens to Old Blossom's milk (a cow) after she has pastured on lilies (Allium) allday?

A. Allium is the onion group. A dairy cow nibbling on wild onions in the pasture, will pass the flavor along in her milk.

#12. What enables squirrels to descend trees head-first?

A. Squirrels have sharp toenails, and toes which are very flexible on the foot. Descending headfirst down a tree, the feet are placed almost sideways, and the nails grasp because the toes can twist around so easily.

I'll answer more after you "digest" these answers.

Is that why my favorite peach tree is dying?  A well meaning helper whipper snipped the tree all the way around. Can I give it a transfusion?   :)

#13 What 2 organisms live together, one furnishing the house and all the conveniences and the other the food supply for both?
Sound impossible? Not at all. This partnership is called a lichen (LYE-kin), a dual plant. A lichen is a combination of a fungus and an algae. Botanists estimate that there are about 15,000 species of lichens, growing from desert waste to arctic tundra, from rain forest to the highest mountaintops.

14. Are young humans precocial or altricial? What does PRECOCIOUS mean?

Human babies are born undeveloped, helpless creatures, totally dependent upon others for sustenance. Thus they may be classed as  altricial. A PRECOCIOUS child, however, may develop from the altricial--mature beyond what is considered normal.

15. What causes clouds to appear, then suddenly disappear, in a matter of minutes?
Clouds appear, then disappear, according to the  temperatrue of the air and its water vapor content. When cooled sufficiently, water vapor condenses into visible clouds. When warmed, these evaporate again.

16. What do you think ? does your dog see in color?
In general , it is thought that most birds see in color, but that most mammals do NOT, but rely on contrasts and movement for visual cues.

17. Did God have something in mind (beside punishment) when He cursed the ground and made Adam's bread come by the sweat of his brow?
Perhaps God knew that man, in his fallen state, needed to be kept busy and humble in the presence of weeds and a stubborn soil. Ask any gardener-it's true!

18. Figure it out! What feature of owl wing feathers allows it to fly silently?
If you compare a wing feather of an owl with one of a pigeon (for example), you will find that the owl feather has SOFT edges, allowing it to fly silently.

19. How did QUACK grass get its name?
QUACK grass is really COUCH grass, a weedy european species. Variations in pronounciation progressed from couch grass to quitch grass, to quick grass and finally to QUACK GRASS. It may have also received this name because its roots were often used in patent medicines.

20. What series of acrobatics are involved when a fly lands on the ceiling? A somersault? A belly-over? A loop-the-loop?
Some observers believe that a fly cruises close beneath the ceiling, reaches out and up with its sticky front feet, catches hold and FLIPS its body in the upside-down position.

Until next time

21. WHAT DO YOU THINK:In what position does a woodpecker sleep?
Ans. Some bird watchers think that a woodpecker sleeps horizontaly on a branch. Others say that when the bird's legs are bent, its feet automatically grasp- even during sleep in a vertical position. In reality, most woodpeckers probably sleep in a nesting hole.

22. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE: All forms of life depend ultimately upon the ability of ----- ------to convert radiant energy (SUNLIGHT) into the chemical energy of carbohydrates.
Ans. All forms of life depend upon 'GREEN PLANTS', whether directly (deer and elk) or indirectly (fox and eagle).

23. DO YOU KNOW: What prompts the workers to groom (clean and stroke) the queen?
Ans. As the workers groom the queen ant, her body exudes sweet droplets which they lap up as a bonus for their work.

24.WHAT IS THE PUREST SOURCE OF WATER: a large river plunging down numerous casades, a spring high on a mountain, or meltwater directly from an Alaskan glacier?
Ans. The size of a river or the rugged route ittakes does NOT guarantee its purity. It may be polluted anywhere along the way. Glacial meltwater contains rock flour, an intestinal irritant. A high mountain spring is generally pure (at least a few years ago-LM)*

** Generally when Bev and I used to hike and take primitive wilderness outings, we carried along with us a bottle of Iodine drops-(6 or 7 drops to each glass of water). It was very effective in preventing sickness.

25. IS MAN an unguligrade, a digitigrade or a plantigrade creature?
Ans. Man is a 'flatfooter', walking on the entire sole of the foot, thus is a plantigrade creature-like the bear.

26.WHAT CAUSES A ROOT to grow down instead of up, as it sprouts from a seed?
Ans. A root exhibits 'positive geotropism'. It bends in response to the earth's gravitational force. The sprouting root is, in reality, headingfor the center of the earth.

27.IS PHOSPHORESCENCE also a form of cold light?
Ans.Phosphorescence is a lingering emission of light from certain objects after exposure to radiant energy. Like bioluminescence, it is cold light. Many minerals are phosphorescent: various sulfides and calcites. Phosphorescence was first noticed in barium sulfate about 1600. Luminous hands on clocks and watches are examples.

28.WHY DO SOARING BIRDS such as hawks and cranes migrate along mountain chains?
Ans. Soaring birds such as hawksand cranes follow the updrafts created by mountain chains. In this way they conserve strength on their migratory journeys.

29.WHAT DO YOU THINK: In the beginning of Creation, did leaves die and fall from the trees?
Ans.There was no death in the original creation. Adam and Eve sorrowed when they saw the leaves fall. It reminded them of theirsin.

30.DOG TRACKS: Can you tell a front paw track from a rear paw track?
Ans. Just as the human hand is more dextrous and flexible than the foot, the front pawsof a dog show more toe movement than the rear paws. Thus the front foot tracks may have more widespread toes than the rear foot tracks.

31. AN EXPENSIVE LESSON: Look up 'Dust Bowl' in an encyclopedia. What caused it? Has there been restoration?
Ans."Dust Bowl" was a name applied to a part of the Great Plains region of the southwestern U.S., some 50 MILLION acres including parts of Texas, Kansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma. Severe dust storms occurred here in the 1930's due to prolonged drought, and because the protective cover of native vegetation was destroyed thru poor farming practices and overgrazing. Farms were abandoned by the hundreds. Many of these farms were later reclaimed by improved farming methods, but much precious soul was lost.

32.WHAT TREE SEED weighs only 1/6000 ounce, but produces a tree weighingover 2000 tons?
Ans.The seed of the 'sequoia' or "big tree" (Sequoladendron Giganteum) weighs a mere 1/6000 of an ounce, but may grow into a 2000 TON giant.

33.WHAT VITAMIN is associated with carotene?
Ans. vegetables and fruits rich in carotene include: carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, apricots and peaches. Because carotene can be converted into vitamin A in the body, it is often called PROvitamin A. Vitamin A is important for the proper development of teeth, for maintenance of skin and mucous membrane and for good eyesight.

34.DO YOU KNOW how the flow of the heavenly River of Life differs from rivers we know at present?
Ans. Rivers, as we know them, begin small at their sources, and become larger as they flow onward. THE RIVER OF LIFE BEGINS HUGE and flows out from the throne of God to water all parts of the earth.

35.HERE'S ONE (or two or three); Botanically--is an almond a nut... or something else? How about the banana? Is the head of a cauliflower a fruit or a vgetable?

Ans. An almond is NOT a true nut, as it has seams along each side. It grows enclosed in a pulpy covering something like a peach, to which it is related. Thus it is a drupe. The banana, like the tomato, has an outer skin enclosing the seeds and their pulpy flesh. So perhaps the banana is a form of berry. The cauliflower head eventually becomes the flowering portion of the plant. But at the stage when we eat it, most of the head is vegetative, supporting tissue. So probably it could be called a vegetable.

36.WHAT IS THE LARGEST SEED OF ALL?
Ans. The largest seed is a 'coconut', the coco-de-mer, from a palm growing on the Seychelles Islands in the Indian ocean. It may weigh 40 pounds or more, and may be 18 inches long and 8 inches thick. The leaves of the tree can be more than 15 feet long.

37.ARE THE OCEANS becoming more salty due to continual runoff from the land?
Ands.Technically, YES, but the salts are in such small amounts and the oceans so vast that any change in the salt content is alomost imperceptible.

38.ONE TO LOOK UP: What small owl of the West has "eyes" on the back of its head?
Ans. The pygmy owl has large black-and-white eye patches on the back of its head. At a distance they look like the eyes of a large creature. The owl itself is only 6 inches tall.

39.EVER THINK OF IT BEFORE: why is snow white?
Ans. Altho snow is merely frozen water (and water is obviously transparent) the crystalline structure of the snowflakes makes the difference. The crystals reflect all the colors of the spectrum, thus in the absence of color they 'appear' white.

40. LOOK IT UP: Why was mistletoe, of all plants, brought in to help celebrate a Christian holiday?
Ans. The special 'magic' attributed to mistletoe by ancient peoples probably relates to its habit of growth: it stays green when other plants lose their leaves, it never touches the ground, but seems to appear mysterioously and seemingly thrives without nourishment. It was thought to have supernatural powers useful for repelling witches, enhancing fertility and curing disease. Eventually such pagan beliefs were Christianized and mistletoe became symbolic of the Incarnation of Christ: springing from an unearthly and mysterious source.

41.DO BIRDS HAVE DECORATING TASTES? why do nuthatches put shiny beetle wings in their nests? Why are fresh petals found in flycatcher nests?
Ans. Nobody really knows why unusual objects are found in bird's nests. Perhaps, birds like people, are attracted by shiny, colorful ojects, and like to look at them just as we do.

42.CUT A STALK OF CELERY. Do you see the single CLOCKWISE spiral and the DOUBLE coutnerclockwise spiral?
IS not God to be praised for His excellence?

43.IS THERE SUCH A THING AS SUMMER HIBERNATION?What does the word "estivation" mean?
Ans. 'Estivation' is the hot weather equivalent of hibernation. Creatures such as tortises, frogs, snails, and catfish estivate when water supplies dry up and spend the summer in a dormant condition.

44. HOW MANY YEARS does a pine needle remain on a tree? Can you tell by studying a twig?
Ans. A pine needle may remain on a tree up to 4 years, depending on the species. You can count back from the growing tip, and judging by the bud scale scars and the condition of the needles, make an estimate as to how long the oldest needles have remained onthe branch.

45. QUICKLY NOW! Looking up at the North Star, which direction around it (clockwise or counterclockwise) do the constellations rotate during the course of a day and night?
Ans. Looking at the North Star and the surrounding constellations periodically throughout the night, you will see that they rotate in a COUNTER clockwise direction.

I trust that this has been an informative and learning experince for all of us.
