The China Study
T. Colin Campbell PhD and Thomas M. Campbell II

Given the barrage of information (TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, etc.) that constantly discuss diet and health, are you confident that you know what you should be doing to improve your health?  Even though information and opinions are plentiful, very few people truly know what they should be doing to improve their health.  Real science has been buried beneath a clutter of irrelevant or even harmful information – junk science, fad diets, and food industry propaganda.

Here is a framework for understanding nutrition and health, a framework that eliminates confusion, prevents and treats disease, and allows you to live a more fulfilling life.  We American taxpayers who pay for the research and health policy in this great country deserve to know that many of the common notions we’ve been told about food, health, and disease are wrong:

•   Synthetic chemicals in the environment and in your food, as problematic as they may be, are not the main cause of cancer.
•   The genes that you inherit from your parents are not the most important factors in determining whether you fall prey to any of the ten leading causes of death.
•   The hope that genetic research will eventually lead to drug cures for diseases ignores more powerful solutions that can be employed today.
•   Obsessively controlling your intake of any one nutrient, such as carbohydrates, fat, cholesterol or omega-3 fats, will not result in long-term health.
•   Vitamins and nutrient supplements do not give you long-term protection against disease.
•   Drugs and surgery don’t cure the diseases that kill most Americans.
•   Your doctor probably does not know what you need to do to be the healthiest you can be.

Some of the findings, published in the most reputable scientific journals, show that:

•   Dietary change can enable diabetic patients to go off their medication.
•   Heart disease can be reversed with diet alone.
•   Breast cancer is related to levels of female hormones in the blood, which are determined by the food we eat.
•   Consuming dairy foods can increase the risk of prostate cancer.
•   Antioxidants, found in fruits and vegetables, are linked to better mental performance in old age.
•   Kidney stones can be prevented by a healthy diet.
•   Type 1 diabetes, one of the most devastating diseases that can befall a child, is convincingly linked to infant feeding practices.

These finding demonstrate that a good diet is the most powerful weapon we have against disease and sickness.  An understanding of this scientific evidence is not only important for improving health; it also has profound implications for our entire society.  We must know why misinformation dominates our society and why we are grossly mistaken in how we investigate diet and disease, how we promote health and how we treat illness.

By any number of measures, America’s health is failing.  We spend far more, per capita, on health care than any other society in the world, and yet two thirds of Americans are overweight, and over 15 million Americans have diabetes, a number that has been rising rapidly.  We fall prey to heart disease as often as we did thirty years ago, and the War on Cancer, launched in the 1970’s, has been a miserable failure.  Half of Americans have a health problem that requires taking a prescription drug every week, and over 100 million Americans have high cholesterol.

To make matters worse, we are leading our youth down a path of disease earlier and earlier in their lives.  One third of the young people in this country are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.  Increasingly, they are falling prey to a form of diabetes that used to be seen only in adults, and these young people now take more prescription drugs than ever before.

These issues all come down to three things:   breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Most of us live within cultural boundaries that define our food preferences and habits.  Example:  raised on a dairy farm where milk was central to our existence.  Or beef farm where beef was central to our existence, or chicken, or hog, the list goes on.  We were told in school, for example, that cow’s milk made strong, healthy bones and teeth.  It was Nature’s most perfect food.

In a project with malnourished Filipino children, it was found that children who ate the highest protein diets were the ones most likely to get liver cancer.  Indian researchers studied tow groups of rats.  In one group, they administered the cancer-causing aflatoxin (a mold toxin found in peanuts and corn), then fed a diet that was composed of 20% protein, a level near what many of us consume in the West.  In the other group, they administered the same amount of aflatoxin, but then fed a diet that was only composed of 5% protein.  Incredibly, every single animal that consumed the 20% protein diet had evidence of liver cancer, and every single animal that consumed a 5% protein diet avoided liver cancer.  It was a 100 to 0 score, leaving no doubt that nutrition trumped chemical carcinogens, even very potent carcinogens, in controlling cancer.  Twenty seven years after this study, a study was funded mostly by the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society, and the American Institute for Cancer Research.

What was found was shocking.  Low-protein diets inhibited the initiation of cancer by aflatoxin, regardless of how much of this carcinogen was administered to these animals.  After cancer initiation was completed (already existed), low-protein diets also dramatically blocked subsequent cancer growth.  In other words, the cancer-producing effects of this highly carcinogenic chemical were rendered insignificant by a low-protein diet.  In fact, dietary protein proved to be so powerful in its effect that we could turn on and turn off cancer growth simply by changing the level consumed.

Furthermore, the amounts of protein being fed were those that we humans routinely consume.  The levels used were not extraordinary as is often the case in carcinogen study.

It was found that not all proteins had this effect.  What protein consistently and strongly promoted cancer?  Casein, which makes up 87% of cow’s milk protein, promoted all stages of the cancer process.  What type of protein did not promote cancer, even at high levels of intake?  The safe proteins were from plants, including wheat and soy.  As this picture came into view, it began to challenge and then to shatter some most cherished assumptions.

This study was taken from animal studies to human studies, jointly arranged through Cornell University, Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventative Medicine.

The study did not rest on animal studies and the massive human study in China.  Findings of other researchers and clinicians also proved to be some of the most exciting findings of the past fifty years.  There findings show that heart disease, diabetes, and obesity can be reversed by a healthy diet.  Other research shows that various cancers, autoimmune diseases, bone health, kidney health, vision and brain disorders in old age (like cognitive dysfunction and Alzheimer’s) are convincingly influenced by diet.  Most importantly, the diet that has time and again been shown to reverse and/or prevent these diseases is the same whole foods, plant-based diet that was found to promote optimal health in the laboratory research and in the China Study.  The findings are consistent.

Americans are confused.  The answer has to do with how health information is generated and communicated and who controls such activities.   The distinctions between government, industry, science and medicine have become blurred.  The distinctions between making a profit and promoting health have become blurred.  The problems with the system do not come in the form of Hollywood-style corruption.  The problems are much more subtle, and yet much more dangerous.  The result is massive amounts of misinformation, for which average American consumers pay twice.  They provide the tax money to do the research, and then they provide the money for their health care to treat their largely preventable diseases.

Yes, thank you Brother Stephen for pointing out some of the findings from this most important ever study on health. I liked the information regarding milk. Some reading here will be helped since they do not know these things.

To do studies on people rather than animals is very exciting. And the numbers of people were very, very high. This study is the most remarkable of its kind and supports all the light we have been given as a people. It most certainly contradicts the position the GC has taken in regards to milk in the diet.

Let us cotinue to look at the various finding in the study. There is so much to appreciate!

The China Study

Little progress has been made in the ‘war on cancer’.  Contrary to what many believe, cancer is not a natural event.  Adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle can prevent the majority of cancers in the United States.  Old age can and should be graceful and peaceful.

Cancer is only part of a larger picture of disease and death in America.  Looking elsewhere, we see that there is an overall pattern of poor health.  For example, we are rapidly becoming the heaviest people on earth.  Overweight Americans now significantly outnumber those who maintain a healthy weight.  Our rate of obesity has been skyrocketing over the past several decades.

But cancer and obesity are not the only epidemics casting a large shadow over American health. Diabetes has also increased in unprecedented proportions.  One out of thirteen Americans now has diabetes, and that ration continues to rise.  If we don’t heed the importance of diet, millions of additional Americans will unknowingly develop diabetes and suffer its consequences, including blindness, limb amputations, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and premature death.  Diabetes among people in their thirties has increased 70% in less than ten years and the percentage of obese people has nearly doubled in the past thirty years.  Such an incredibly fast increase in these signal diseases in American young to middle-age population forecasts a health care catastrophe in the time coming.  34% of Diabetics aren’t aware of their illness.

But the most pervasive killer in our culture is not obesity, diabetes, or cancer.  It is heart disease.  Heart disease will kill one out of every three Americans.  Over 60 million Americans currently suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.

So, leading causes of death, in order, are as follows:

Diseases of the heart
Cancer
Medical Care *
Stroke
Chronic Lower Respiratory diseases
Accidents
Diabetes Mellitus
Influenza and Pneumonia
Alzheimer’s Disease

*Medical errors include, in order of least to most:

Medication Errors
Unnecessary Surgery
Other Preventable Errors in Hospitals
Hospital Borne Infections
Adverse Drug Effects

The last and largest category of deaths in this group are the hospitalized patients who die from the ‘noxious, unintended and undesired effect of a drug, which occurs at normal doses.  Even with the use of approved medicines and correct medication procedures, over one hundred thousand people die every year from unintended reactions to the ‘medicine’ that is supposed to be reviving their health.  Incidentally, this same report, which summarized and analyzed thirty nice separate studies, found that almost l7% of all hospitalized patients have experienced a serious adverse drug reaction, one that ‘requires hospitalization, prolongs hospitalization, is permanently disabling or results in death.’  This does not include the number who suffer from incorrect administration and use of these drugs.  Nor does it include adverse drug events that are labeled ‘possible’ effects, or drugs that do not accomplish their intended goal.  In other words, one of fifteen (7%) is a conservative number.

We spent over a trillion dollars on health care in 1997.  The Health Care Financing Administration predicted that our system would cost 16 trillion dollars by 2030.  Cost have so consistently outpaced inflation that we now spend one out of every seven dollars the economy produces on health care.  We have seen almost a 300% increase in expenditures, as a percentage of GDP, in less than fourty years!  What is all the extra financing buying?  Is it creating health?  Many serious commentators and scientists say no.  Too often in the United States, a doctor’s treatment decisions are made on the basis of money, not health.  We spend more money on health care than any other country on this planet, and we still have tens of millions of people without access to basic care.  Isn’t it paradoxical that the system that is supposed to heal us too often hurts us?

Although many  of us think we’re well informed on nutrition, we’re not.  We tend to follow one faddish diet after another.  We sdisdain saturated fats, butter or carbohydrates, and then embrace vitamin E, calcium supplements, aspirin or zinc and focus our energy and effort on extremely specific food components, as if this will unlock the secrets of health.  All too often, fancy outweighs fact.  Perhaps you remember the protein diet fad that gripped the country in the late 1970’s.  The promise was that you could lose weight by replacing real food with a protein shake.  In a very short while, almost sixty women died from the diet.  More recently millions have adopted high-protein, high-fat diets based on books such as Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution, Protein Power and The South Beach Diet.  There is increasing evidence that these modern protein fads continue to inflict a great variety of dangerous health disorders.  What we don’t know about nutrition can hurt us.

So, what is the prescription for good health?  In short, it is about the multiple health benefits of consuming plant-based foods, and the largely unappreciated health dangers of consuming animal-based foods, including all types of meat, dairy, and eggs.

The benefits produced by eating a plant-based diet are far more diverse and impressive than any drug or surgery used in medical practice.  Heart diseases, cancers, diatetes, stroke and hypertension, arthritis, cataracts, Alzheimer’s disease, impotence, and all sorts of other chronic diseases can by largely prevented.  These diseases, which generally occur with atging and tissue degeneration, kill the majority of us before our time.

Impressive evidence now exists to show that advanced heart disease, relatively advanced cancers of certain types, diabetes and a few other gegenerative diseases can be reversed by diet.  Those in science or medicine who shut their minds to such an idea are being more than stubborn, they are being irresponsible.

One more exciting benefit of good nutrition is the prevention of diseases that are thought to be due to genetic predisposition.  We now know that we can largely avoid these ‘genetic’ diseases even though we may harbor the gene that is responsible for the disease.  Gene research being done by drug companies obscure the affordable, efficacious health solutions that currently exist:  solutions based on nutrition.

Cancer growth can be turned off and on by nutrition, despite very strong genetic predisposition.

Eating the right way not only prevents disease but also generates health and a sense of well-being, both physically and mentally.  Some world class athletes have discovered that eating a low-fat plant-based diet gives them a significant edge in ferformance.

Then there is the question of our excessive dependence on drugs and surgery to control our health.  In its simplest form, eating the right way would largely obviate the enormous costs of using drugs, as well as their side effects.  Fewer people would need to wage lengthy, expensive battles with chronic disease in hospitals over their last years of life.  Health care costs would drop and medical mistakes would wane as premature death plummeted.  In essence, our health care system would finally protect and promote our health as it is meant to do.

It is sad when such evidence needs to be presented to those who were given this information many years ago through a prophet. But, in His love for humanity, God is indeed using the world to confirm what He sent to His people over a hundred years ago. Even, now some will ignore the evidence and turn to the ways of the world for healing when they ought to correct the underlying problem which is plainly laid out for us in a similar manner as it was given so many years ago.

Thanks, again, Brother Stephen.

Amen, Brother Richard.  Why must people be so skeptic when the test of a true prophet is fully met?  Show me her error.  I have made that statement many times and, as yet, no one has been able to do that.

Esau sold his birthright because of his appetite.  Since Esau sold his birthright for appetite, will we do likewise?  Satan works also by the power of appetite.  There are many indicators in this world today that the food truths in the Bible are upheld.  We must control appetite, rather than being controlled by it.  Beware the food borne plagues that are besetting this world.  They are springing up virtually unnoticed, or at least explained away, by most.  The remnant is pure.

Speaking of drugs, medications; isn't it interesting that the word 'sorceries' found in the Bible is interpreted from the Greek word 'pharmakia' which means pharmacy?  Drugs and medications that we use to combat disease are mostly unsuccessful as a cure, as they actually change the nature and location of disease.  For instance, when we use medication to lower cholesterol, we may not die of a heart attack caused by cholesterol blockage, but we very well may die of a brain annurism or other heart failure.  The disease was changed, not cured.

An interesting aside:  A physician friend told me that the reason the Adkins Diet is successful for people to lose weight is because the low carb, high protein diet actually kills the body!  He compared the bodily response to Chemotherapy how it kills the body.  Chemo is used with the hope of killing cancer cells before killing the person!

Cancer is a scourge. Many do not understand where it comes from. Would you like to know?  Buy, borrow, or go to your library and get The China Study by T Colin Campbell. He is an honest man, a noted researcher from Cornell University, and worked on the research that told us about afflatoxin and nitrosamines, the two potent carcinagens. Now, he tells us about how to turn cancer off and on. It is research that ought to have been undertaken by Loma Linda, but was not. So, we are sad, but thankful that this honest researcher has been used to reveal to the world the truth about where cancer comes from.

Get the book!  It may save your child or your grandchild's life.

I guess I didn't remember this topic but I'm just a few chapters into it and indeed it's a great book. It shows just how right Mrs. White was in her council concerning dairy and meat eating.

If you have not seen the documentary/movie "Forks Over Knives" yet, I recommend it.  I also recommend using it in our health outreaches.  To purchase DVD's and companion books, google their website.  They are now available in some stores now.

My wife and I went to Grand Rapids to see it in a theater.  My wife, who  is not vegan, said (not even a quarter of the way into the movie) that we must purchase it to share with others.   We did, and the results are awesome.

Even the rocks........

Somewhere around 1990 I contacted Dr. Campbell for information about the China Study. We had a nice visit and he provided me with a video on the study. It was my intention to maintain a contact with him, but at the time I saw that he was talking with some from Weimar and I did not want to interfere with I hoped was God's leading. Since then I have continued to keep up with his work. He is an honest man, and in today's world that means great tribulation, even from some in our church. Very sad indeed.

For those not familiar with his work, here is a video that will bring you up to date. His great work that all ought to study is his conclusion that milk protein causes cancer.  He reviews this in the book The China Study. Milk over a hundred years ago did not cause cancer. What has changed? Just as we were told, the disease in animals increased and thus disease is transferred to those who drink or eat dairy. This is supported by a study done by UC Berkely on breast cancer and Bovine Leukemia Virus which is found in milk. As time goes on, science is finding that there are more and more viruses that cause cancer.

The world today is less and less tolerant of anything that restricts freedom to act even in food, they will discredit or find a way around it. Search google, find a report that supports your way of thinking and continue as before.

Sad.

He is an honest man.

It is indeed sad that whole institutions in America have been corrupted, which leads to the underlying cause, the failure of religion. When religion becomes corrupt, then there is little hope that society will not fail. What we are seeing is the fundamental Protestant beliefs have been rejected by a great portion of the United States. The Constitution and Protestant heritage are no longer the foundation of American society. Come Lord Jesus!
