Further Thought: Ellen G. White, “In the Court of Babylon”, pp. 479-490, in Prophets and Kings; “Words of Caution”, pp. 324, 329; “No Respect of Persons With God”, pp. 330, 331, in Gospel Workers; “Rejoicing in the Lord”, pp. 115-126, in Steps to Christ.
No respect of persons with God. “The religion of Christ uplifts the receiver to a higher plane of thought and action, while at the same time it presents the whole human race as alike the objects of the love of God, being purchased by the sacrifice of His Son. At the feet of Jesus, the rich and the poor, the learned and the ignorant, meet together, with no thought of caste or worldly preeminence. All earthly distinctions are forgotten as we look upon Him whom our sins have pierced. The self-denial, the condescension, the infinite compassion of Him who was highly exalted in heaven, puts to shame human pride, self-esteem, and social caste. Pure, undefiled religion manifests its heaven-born principles in bringing into oneness all who are sanctified through the truth. All meet as blood-bought souls, alike dependent upon Him who has redeemed them to God”. – Ellen G. White, Gospel Workers, p. 330.
Amen! What a beautiful gospel message! Let's take a closer look that some may be enlightened as to what is the gospel message and the power which it brings to repentant sinners, and how the message can become ours for real.
What does the gospel message do to those who behold it? "The self-denial, the condescension, the infinite compassion of Him who was highly exalted in heaven, puts to shame human pride, self-esteem, and social caste." It is this love that God has for us while we were yet sinners that brings about repentance not to be repented of. "....the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?" Romans 2:4.
When we are converted and remain in that state, all earthly distinctions are lost sight of. What brings this about, this conversion from selfishness to unselfishness? "All earthly distinctions are forgotten as we look upon Him whom our sins have pierced." We are healed by His stripes. By His grace, His unmerited favor towards us that our hearts are broken and given to Him fully. It is by beholding His glory, His character that we are changed in the same image, character, from glory to glory by the Holy Spirit.
Discussion Questions:
As a class, discuss your answers to Sunday’s study.
What principles can we find from the Ellen G. White quote above that, if applied, would revolutionize our family lives?
How well has your local church done in nurturing the younger generation of believers? What can you as a class do to help the church in this important task?
What are the challenges of trying to pass on faith to another generation?
In what ways does the culture you live in impact your family life for good, and in what ways does it impact it for evil?
The most important cultural influence on the family is what the children see in their school, in their church, and in their home. If that culture is not Christian culture as we as a people have been given, then you can believe that all who are not thoroughly grounded will be a great temptation to do other than follow Christ and His truth. On the other hand, if these institutions are walking in the light, living in the Spirit, and keeping the children away from the world to a great degree, then we can expect the family will greatly benefit.
Sadly, the Laodicean condition is one in which church leaders, members, and institutions are not walking in light while thinking they are just fine and in need of nothing. How much greater can the impact for evil be on the family? Adults will remain deceived because of the error being taught. Children will see the hypocrisy and leave the church. What greater evil can there be than to be in a school, a church, or a home that professes to love God supremely but does not?
