The Desire of Ages--37--The First Evangelists

In the name of Christ the chosen twelve went out, as He had gone, "to preach the gospel to the poor, . . . to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord." Luke 4:18, 19.

Many people who sit in the pew each week in church think that to be like the 12 disciples they have to go to foreign lands or maybe have some kind large organized ministry in the church. However, can't we also be like the disciples by simply being a witness (maybe even without words) to our families, friends, coworkers and acquaintances. There are many small things you can do to spread the gospel. It could even be just a smile at the right the time to the right person when lead by the Spirit. I have a story to follow up with that but don't have the time to type it out right now. As the old song goes... Brighten the Corner Where You Are!

As we daily walk through this book together we are beholding the loveliness of Jesus in each and every chapter we read. This is invaluable instruction for us as we mingle throughout the day with those who need to know Jesus too. Some may know about Him but not know Him as a personal Saviour. Others may not even know about Him. We are called to be His witnesses and by us spending time with Jesus this morning, our words, actions and motives this day will be led by the Holy Spirit.


"In the training of the disciples the example of the Saviour's life was far more effective than any mere doctrinal instruction. When they were separated from Him every look and tone and word cam back to them........The love of Christ, manifested in unselfish ministry will be more effective in reforming the evildoer than will the sword or the court of justice.......Often the heart will harden under reproof; but it will melt under the love of Christ. The missionary cannot only relieve physical maladies, but he can lead the sinner to the Great Physician, who can cleanse the soul from the leprosy of sin. Through His servants, God designs that the sick, the unfortunate, those possessed of evil spirits, shall hear, His voice. Through His human agencies He desires to be a Comforter such as the world knows not."

This is possible only through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit as we spend this thoughtful hour each day with Jesus. I don't know how it happens; all I know is that it works. God does not lie.


Here I am Lord Jesus with all my weaknesses and confessed faults. Take me and use me today to bring hope and comfort to some needy soul. Amen.

Amen Jim and Dorine! Our Witness is more important then the doctrines we teach. If we will follow in the path of Jesus, and spend more time healing then preaching, we will see similar results as we see in the life of Christ. The medical missionary work is the "right arm" of the gospel. It will soften the heart for the reception of the Word.

And yes dear sister, by beholding the loveliness of Jesus, we are transformed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit. It is an intellectual and a spiritual truth that by beholding we become changed. The mine gradually adapts itself to that which it is accustomed to love and reverence.

       The disciples' message was the same as that of John the Baptist and of Christ Himself: "The kingdom of heaven is at hand." They were to enter into no controversy with the people as to whether Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah; but in His name they were to do the same works of mercy as He had done. He bade them, "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give."
     During His ministry Jesus devoted more time to healing the sick than to preaching. His miracles testified to the truth of His words, that He came not to destroy but to save. His righteousness went before Him, and the glory of the Lord was His rearward. Wherever He went, the tidings of His mercy preceded Him. Where He had passed, the objects of His compassion were rejoicing in health, and making trial of their new-found powers. Crowds were collecting around them to hear from their lips the works that the Lord had wrought. His voice was the first sound that many had ever heard, His name the first word they had ever spoken, His face the first they had ever looked upon. Why should they not love Jesus, and sound His praise? As He passed through the towns and cities He was like a vital current, diffusing life and joy wherever He went.
     The followers of Christ are to labor as He did. We are to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and comfort the suffering and afflicted. We are to minister to the despairing, and inspire hope in the hopeless. And to us also the promise will be fulfilled, "Thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rearward." Isaiah 58:8. The love of Christ, manifested in unselfish ministry, will be more effective in reforming the evildoer than will the sword or the court of justice. These are necessary to strike terror to the lawbreaker, but the loving missionary can do more than this. Often the heart will harden under reproof; but it will melt under the love of Christ. The missionary cannot only relieve physical maladies, but he can lead the sinner to the Great Physician, who can cleanse the soul from the leprosy of sin. Through His servants, God designs that the sick, the unfortunate, those possessed of evil spirits, shall hear His voice. Through His human agencies He desires to be a Comforter such as the world knows not.

Praise the Lord for our witnesses! As each of you have shared--Jim, Dorine, and Richard--we are being SO SO BLESSED by spending this "thoughtful hour" with Jesus and He is teaching us more of His loveliness and how He lived and blessed others. We will go and do likewise when we surrender the whole heart to Him and have this genuine experience of saving faith--a faith that is revealed in all of the fruits of the Spirit so that not one is missing, bringing the life into harmony with all the commandments of God as the soul learns the light as it is in Jesus.

Look upon Jesus and learn how you can minister to others and bless them. We can do nothing of ourselves; we need an abiding Christ in our hearts. He has the power by His grace to transform our hearts to be pure and holy, taking away the sin and unbelief, to impart to us His righteousness. Others will see Jesus is a living Savior, and we will make His service attractive, as it really is!

Jesus Himself never purchased peace by compromise. His heart overflowed with love for the whole human race, but He was never indulgent to their sins. He was too much their friend to remain silent while they were pursuing a course that would ruin their souls,--the souls He had purchased with His own blood. He labored that man should be true to himself, true to his higher and eternal interest. The servants of Christ are called to the same work, and they should beware lest, in seeking to prevent discord, they surrender the truth. They are to "follow after the things which make for peace" (Romans 14:19); but real peace can never be secured by compromising principle. And no man can be true to principle without exciting opposition. A Christianity that is spiritual will be opposed by the children of disobedience. But Jesus bade His disciples, "Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul." Those who are true to God need not fear the power of men nor the enmity of Satan. In Christ their eternal life is secure. Their only fear should be lest they surrender the truth, and thus betray the trust with which God has honored them.  {The Desire of Ages, page 356, paragraph 1}

Jesus sees our need, and He has made infinite provision in giving us the Holy Spirit to guide us in every trial and temptation. We may rely upon Infinite Wisdom to direct the battle brought to us by the Holy Spirit. Let us remember that as long as we are living by faith upon Christ, the Holy Spirit indwells our hearts and minds so that all the fruits of His character--love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness, faith, and temperance--will be seen in our lives without one missing. As long as we have the connection with Christ by His Spirit, which glorifies our Father in heaven, we are perfect in Him at that stage of experience and growth as we gladly follow all the light of truth thus far revealed to us, for Jesus said, "If ye love Me, keep My commandments" (John 14:15). Love is expressed as a high and holy principle in our lives that leads us to walk even as He walked--in constant union and communion with our Heavenly Father! What a joy we can experience as we serve the Lord with gladness this Sabbath day!

"Now the Saviour's eye penetrates the future; He beholds the broader fields in which, after His death, the disciples are to be witnesses for Him. His prophetic glance takes in the experience of His servants through all the ages till He shall come the second time. He shows His followers the conflicts they must meet; He reveals the character and plan of the battle. He lays open before them the perils they must encounter, the self-denial that will be required. He desires them to count the cost, that they may not be taken unawares by the enemy. Their warfare is not to be waged against flesh and blood, but 'against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.' Ephesians 6:12, R. V. They are to contend with supernatural forces, but they are assured of supernatural help. All the intelligences of heaven are in this army. And more than angels are in the ranks. The Holy Spirit, the representative of the Captain of the Lord's host, comes down to direct the battle. Our infirmities may be many, our sins and mistakes grievous; but the grace of God is for all who seek it with contrition. The power of Omnipotence is enlisted in behalf of those who trust in God." {The Desire of Ages, page 352, paragraph 2}

Amen Pastor Sean. What is this great battle that we must fight? It is the battle with self! How are we to be God's witnesses? We are to be victorious over self! How are we to do this? We receive omnipotent power from Christ to meet every temptation that come to us! Our message is to be the same message as Jesus' message. We are to do the same work as He and His disciples did. In doing this we will reveal His and our love for sinners.

Two thoughts. First, no need to express what is being said about our duty to speak the truth in love when the Spirit leads. It is made plain that all may understand. Second, "fear" means fear, no matter how often it is translated otherwise. If we surrender the truth, then we ought to be fearful.

I love how close God is to us continually, and that ministry after the similitude of Christ is the greatest gift, the most weighty trust, that He could bestow upon us in preparation for heaven! God has infinite love in His heart for us, and as we behold the infinite loveliness of Jesus, we are changed from glory to glory, and find His character wrought out in us as a result of union and communion with Him. What is His character? It is the revelation of Christ in the law, it is all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing. This is the outflow of the heart and mind that has been renewed to partake of the divine nature, and there is no limit the usefulness of one who has such a continuous experience with God whose love never fails!

    "The Bible shows us God in His high and holy place, not in a state of inactivity, not in silence and solitude, but surrounded by ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of holy intelligences, all waiting to do His will. Through channels which we cannot discern He is in active communication with every part of His dominion. But it is in this speck of a world, in the souls that He gave His only-begotten Son to save, that His interest and the interest of all heaven is centered. God is bending from His throne to hear the cry of the oppressed. To every sincere prayer He answers, 'Here am I.' He uplifts the distressed and downtrodden. In all our afflictions He is afflicted. In every temptation and every trial the angel of His presence is near to deliver."  {The Desire of Ages, page 356, paragraph 3}

Praise God for how by experience in becoming one with God in selfless ministry we have heaven in our hearts! Then it is the most natural thing to want to ever be near Jesus, and do His will as He works in us, and we abide in Him!

Amen, Jim! Jesus healed more than He preached because this was the access He needed to reach the heart. He came to bring peace, but never did He compromise truth! I love how complete Christ's character is for us as His disciples! As we surrender fully to Christ, the heart and mind are renewed by divine grace, and all of the fruits of His Spirit are manifest in our lives! I pray that Christ may bring true peace through us today without compromise of any truth. The only way to have such an experience is to have a living-faith experience with Christ so the Holy Spirit guides moment-by-moment!

Amen and amen!  God loves us and gives us the joy of sharing that love with others. In Scripture it is called grace and living water. If we would follow the lead of Jesus  we should hasten His soon coming! The "right arm" of the gospel is the healing message God has given to the church to take to the world. We can be the hand of Christ to prevent and heal diseases. The health message in Scripture points us to the great healing benefit of not eating the carcass of animals nor drinking their milk. We knew that drinking milk from animals would transmit their diseases to us. In many countries the dairy cows are infected with Leukemia. In the United States where we feel we are protected by the USDA, it is no longer the case. Most dairies now produce milk infected with Leukemia Virus which then infects those who use dairy products.

Those in the world have been kept in the dark. It is such a blessing to present these life saving truths to those who are seeking truth. It does indeed open the door to many hearts that we may then present the loveliness of Jesus.

Not for a moment are we safe without a living connection with Christ. Apart from Him, we can do no good (selfless) thing. We are indebted to Him for His infinite sacrifice, and we are utterly in need of Him in constant dependence upon His grace to keep our hearts pure and revealing the fruits of His Spirit without one missing. Let us go through this day truly abiding in Christ!

"He who would confess Christ must have Christ abiding in him. He cannot communicate that which he has not received. The disciples might speak fluently on doctrines, they might repeat the words of Christ Himself; but unless they possessed Christlike meekness and love, they were not confessing Him. A spirit contrary to the spirit of Christ would deny Him, whatever the profession. Men may deny Christ by evilspeaking, by foolish talking, by words that are untruthful or unkind. They may deny Him by shunning life's burdens, by the pursuit of sinful pleasure. They may deny Him by conforming to the world, by uncourteous behavior, by the love of their own opinions, by justifying self, by cherishing doubt, borrowing trouble, and dwelling in darkness. In all these ways they declare that Christ is not in them. And 'whosoever shall deny Me before men,' He says, 'him will I also deny before My Father which is in heaven.'" {The Desire of Ages, page 357, paragraph 1}

My prayer is to live today to glorify Christ in the way that He knows to be best! Let us look to Him and go forth to share the light of His love!!

They need to have close communion with God, lest, under provocation, self rise up, and they pour forth a torrent of words that are unbefitting, that are not as dew or the still showers that refresh the withering plants. This is what Satan wants them to do; for these are his methods. It is the dragon that is wroth; it is the spirit of Satan that is revealed in anger and accusing. But God's servants are to be representatives of Him. He desires them to deal only in the currency of heaven, the truth that bears His own image and superscription. The power by which they are to overcome evil is the power of Christ. The glory of Christ is their strength. They are to fix their eyes upon His loveliness. Then they can present the gospel with divine tact and gentleness. And the spirit that is kept gentle under provocation will speak more effectively in favor of the truth than will any argument, however forcible."

This speaks to me so sweetly. I want the gentleness of Jesus to reign in my life. I want my tongue to be an instrument that God uses to draw souls to Him. His example woos me into action like nothing else can.

Amen and amen!  If we want to be His witnesses, then we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Then we shall manifest love, joy, and peace even when put upon by unkindness. What does Jesus do in response to our testifying of Him?

 Jesus continues: As you confess Me before men, so I will confess you before God and the holy angels. You are to be My witnesses upon earth, channels through which My grace can flow for the healing of the world. So I will be your representative in heaven. The Father beholds not your faulty character, but He sees you as clothed in My perfection. I am the medium through which Heaven's blessings shall come to you. And everyone who confesses Me by sharing My sacrifice for the lost shall be confessed as a sharer in the glory and joy of the redeemed.   

What a God we serve!!!

We must share and declare the truth in all it's purity with love and compassion

I am reminded of the words of this little chorus and this is made possible by the promise of the Holy Spirit. This is my prayer for today.

" Though none go with me still I will follow, though none go with me still I will follow, though none go with me still I will follow...No turning back, No turning back. -- Let us today rededicate our lives to Jesus to be used as He sees fit by example and by the sharing of the Good News and by the power of the Holy Spirit we will enabled to Stand Like The Brave.

When Jesus was leaving earth to return to His Father He left us these wonderful assuring and empowering words found in the gospel of Matthew chapter 28...." And Jesus came and spake unto them,( his disciples ) saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.  20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

We can have full assurance that what He has asked us to do He will grant us the power to accomplish ( if ) we keep our eyes fixed on Him!! What an awesome privilege is ours to serve our Lord as His representative on earth. By His grace let us Bloom wherever we have been planted on planet earth.

Amen, Brother Beacon! We live in a day when we will be tested whether we will obey man or God. We will be delivered before counsels Persecution will spread the light. The truth has been misrepresented. We are to bear the truth to all who are open to hear the truth. The loveliness of Jesus is to be spread around the world by us. When we need power to withstand the evil in this world, God will give it to us just as He gave it to Stephen. Paul was faithful likewise and was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

The power of grace is seen when Christians are abused.

    Those who are brought in controversy with the enemies of truth have to meet, not only men, but Satan and his agents. Let them remember the Saviour's words, "Behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves." Luke 10:3. Let them rest in the love of God, and the spirit will be kept calm, even under personal abuse. The Lord will clothe them with a divine panoply. His Holy Spirit will influence the mind and heart, so that their voices shall not catch the notes of the baying of the wolves.

I always am impressed when I see another having been impressed with the same truth that I was.  There is a hand under the wheels which are going in every direction. God is leading a people into perfect accord who manifest love, joy, and peace.

Amen, Beacon and Richard!

Character is power. Who we are speaks more powerfully than what we say. But what we say is to be an outflow of true character. As we abide in Christ, as we reveal His attributes of loveliness, the world will see the evidence that the divine nature has power to keep us lifted above the fallen nature's clamors so we can reveal--without an interruption--all of the fruits of the Spirit without one missing!

Looking continually to Jesus I find not only motivation, but power to live as He did in my unique sphere and struggles--and the greater the trial, the greater the joy in the continual taste of victory in His presence, which is fullness of joy!

"He wept over Jerusalem, the city He loved, that refused to receive Him, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. They rejected Him, the Saviour, but He regarded them with pitying tenderness, and sorrow so deep that it broke His heart. Every soul was precious in His eyes. While He always bore Himself with divine dignity, He bowed with tenderest regard to every member of the family of God. In all men He saw fallen souls whom it was His mission to save."

Here is the most precious description of the love that Jesus possesses for each soul. This same love imparted to us by the Holy Spirit will motivate us to go forth as His representatives to a world that knows Him not. We all have a work to do. Not all will or can do the same work but where ever the Lord sends us He will be there, giving us the strength and wisdom we need for each situation. The world is waiting; are we ready and willing? If we are then we have nothing to fear because all God asks for is a humble willing heart. He will do the motivating and training. And it's free.

"Jesus exercised the greatest tact, and thoughtful, kind attention in His intercourse with the people. He was never rude, never needlessly spoke a severe word, never gave needless pain to a sensitive soul. He did not censure human weakness. He fearlessly denounced hypocrisy, unbelief, and iniquity, but tears were in His voice as He uttered His scathing rebukes. He wept over Jerusalem, the city He loved, that refused to receive Him, the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
