Have you wondered how mom is going to keep one egg warm while allowing the other egg to hatch? An eaglet will need to breathe. How to keep it warm and not smoother it while keeping both egg and eaglet warm?

Watching mom this morning a little before 6am, she started rolling one of the eggs, and inspecting it. It is now a little past 6:30 am in Georgia, she has rolled one egg off to the side and is inspecting it regularly.  At first I thought it might not be viable since it was the first time she rolled it so far off to the side. But, as she settled back down, her body still kept the egg close and her wing was protecting it. She has not abandoned the egg. She has separated it and is giving more attention to it.

As I am watching her head, I see the wind blowing from her left and lifting the feathers on her head up. The egg is under her right wing, thus is downwind with her body a buffer against the wind coming from her left side. Wind has slowed quite a bit.

Dawn is 7:02    Sunrise is at   7:28

Forecast is for a little warmer tonight 21 and the forecast for Sunday night has improved with above freezing temps and a 60% chance of rain.  Freezing rain has been scratched!    :)

Mom's a little perplexed as she hears a weird sound drifting up to the nest, rock music.

It would be sad if the eggs do not hatch after so much work and patience by the parents. In these very cold nights, it is possible the eggs are not viable. There were times when they were uncovered in freezing temps. A percentage of eggs are not viable or infertile.

We are on the outside for egg 1, and egg 2 could begin to hatch if it is viable. The hatching may have started and we just can't see it.

On April 7 of last year, Ed and Ellie fought off a young eagle attack on the nest with their eaglets only a couple of months old. It was caught on video and is posted here.  You will have to go to April 7, 2015.

On Feb 9, 2014, Ellie just barely escapes and attack by an owl which rips over the nest in an attack dive as she is off the eggs and fluffing the nest.

We have a pip!!!   Two hours ago there was none, now the little one is trying to escape the shell!   Both Mom and Dad have to keep the egg upright so the chick does not drown in the fluid.   http://www.berry.edu/eaglecam/

I thought they both would stay in the nest, does this mean there are two nests, one for him, one for her ?   Looks like they need a bigger nest, a king size, not a queen size .

The eaglet hatched sometime around 7:30pm Georgia time.  It is hard to see the chick in the dark. Not sure if this is egg one or two. We will know soon enough. Am thankful this pair of faithful eagles has at least one eaglet after all the work. Mom did most of the nesting today. Dad was there with food and offered to help, but Mom stayed with the eggs.

I was out of town, but kept a watch on another's computer.

Mom's feeding #1 who is having a ball. #2 is not doing very well and is laying motionless. Feeding goes on and on. Dad is watching it all and after awhile says enough is enough. He hops down from the branch and steps between Mom and #1. He takes a piece of food and offers it to the little one. He then takes over and covers the eaglets. Mom shrugs here wings, and takes off for a flight.

You can watch it on Cam 1 at 3:41-3:44pm.  It will not stay up long, so catch it quick, the stills do not portray the situation adequately.      http://www.berry.edu/eaglecam/

The little one is not getting the food as is the strong one. He is able to hold his head up for a short period, so is doing better. This is the 7am feeding. The little one is on bottom of screen.

Poor little one gets pushed over by the strong one. Dad does not seem to be as concerned as before. He keeps feeding the strong one.  :(   If you are working on your computer, open up the Berry site and then open a new window where you are working. When feeding time comes, you will hear the babies chirping in the closed window. That is how I know when something is happening.

The little one is getting beat up by the strong one. Satan is alive and well. There is enough food for all, but sin has led to selfishness even in the animal kingdom. The strong one is pecking on the little one who is weaker and hungry. At 9:42am today you will find the little one being held down by the strong one. He is using his wings to keep the little down at the morning feeding. The little one's head is under the body of the strong one.

Maybe the eaglets come into the world in a neutral state, not selfish? I don't think so. It is not a learned character, but one that is inherited by nature. There are lessons to be learned through nature. Do hate sin enough to give it up? Our only hope is found in Christ. He will help us to overcome the sinful nature we were given at birth.
