It may not be asparagus but look at this guy's huge carrots he grows in containers and his methods then use the carrot seeds you used for the huge carrots last year. Possibly growing extra fast and sweet and tender. look at the exhibition carrots in containers using a predrilled hole in the sand filled with compost.

Once one row of shoots up to 12 inches tall, weed, apply lime and rockdust on top of the ground around them and mulch with 8 inches wood chips - chipper tree brush mix, as an experiment to see how the mulch affects the 1st, 2nd, 3rd year's of growth.
