Google's Autocomplete
« on: January 01, 2014, 08:25:51 AM »
I'm really tired of google's autocomplete feature. That's the feature that makes all the suggestions when you start tying into the search box. So today I went in search of a way to turn it off. I found out I can't turn it off. Google hasn't built that into the search engine. But I did find a work around. It took me a couple of minutes to really understand what they were saying as they didn't make it very clear. So I'll try to make it clear. When you go to the google search page, which most people have set as their home page, they usually have this url: https://www.google.com/. (I have Firefox set to open to a blank page.) If you change your home page/search engine to this url: https://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0 you will no longer get the autocomplete feature. Now I can search without all those suggestions popping up.  :D
O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. O Lord, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing. Jeremiah  10:23-24

The other option would be use to https://www.startpage.com/ which also uses google to get results. However, the drawback here is that you will not get your searches optimized for your geographical location. The other drawback is that search results will also be given without your previous search history in mind. Google is very good at what it does takes those and other things into consideration when it spits back the results. However, some might also consider these things a plus and not a negative. If you don't trust startpage's results do a side by side comparison using the exact search terms I think you'll find that they are pretty close.

Also keep in mind that depending on your settings Firefox will also do a auto-complete or suggestion terms based on your history.
