An electric fence is not hard to put up and is effective in keeping away  many animals the size of a coon such as skunks, opossums etc..

She has a small 12' x 48 ' garden and planted a little of  most things that do not vine out and take up a lot of space.

Cp, I had a chuckle at this. I know a lot of people who would not lable a 12x48 garden as "small" :)

And for those who take up Cp's advice and put up an electric fence don't do what my brother did. He installed one and tested it with his own hand but found it to be very weak. So he went and acquired a 4ft copper rod and drove it into the ground hoping to make the ground better. He then went and tested it again and it was stronger but he thought it still too weak to keep out the pests. So then he got curious and took off his boots and tested it. Needless to say he found out real quick exactly how strong his electric fence was. It's a somewhat funny story but just be careful if you're brave enough to test the fence with your own hide.

I'm surprised it took that much juice to keep the critters out unless maybe he was using a make and break fencer and the animals were running through the wire. A constant  current is more effective as a pulsating current can be hit and miss and sometimes the animal may happen to run through the wire between pulses.  In other words they can briefly touch the wire and not get shocked. However, a downside from a constant current is that often birds cannot get away from it when they peck a bug on the wire and are left lying on the ground dead. I like to use a claw hammer and bridge the gap from the wire  to a steel post and observe the spark. I have been zapped hard enough from livestock fencers not to care too much about testing them with my hands. Some of those will knock you down.

A day's worth of canned spuds seasoned with a host of herbs and spices.

None of this is from my garden since I don't have an apple or blueberry orchard. But this year I mixed some blueberries into our applesauce and the blueberries definitely make their presence known. :)

Blapple Sauce...hmmm... I like it. I will say that it's odd to look at the shelves and see a purple color rather than the normal light brown.

This bruiser was 3 1/2 " in diameter, larger than a wide mouth Mason jar.

Wow, now that's a carrot. That will feed the family and company too. It obviously was happy with what it grew in all summer. Were others similiar in size or is this the Granddaddy of the lot?

I have only dug about 1/3 of them. There were others almost as big but so far that is the daddy. He is a St. Valery heirloom. It is interesting that where they could they went down deep. where they could not they often split off with several legs. This guy just got big and round. He is only 7" long but 11" in circumference.

I have collected some  since they produced seed the first year. Some of it ripened before frost and some did not.
