The governor of California has declared a state of emergency for the Rim fire that has now burned at least 16,000 acres within Yosemite National Park. Over 143,000 acres have burned. San Francisco has also been declared a state of emergency due to the threat from the fire to its water and electrical supply. The fire is approaching Hetch Hetchy Reservoir from the west, the source of San Francisco's water. source

The Yosemite fire is still threatening San Francisco's power and water supply and several small towns. The fire is 30% contained and still spreading with over 190,000 acres burned. 4500 firefighters are battling the fire. Watch time lapse video

"Megafires" are becoming the norm according to some experts on forest fires.  The management of the forests have contributed to the increase in the fire load in many areas of the United States. The Rim Fire burning in and around Yosemite National Park has charred over 222,000 acres and is now 40% contained. 4995 workers are involved in the fire suppression activities. The fire began 15 days ago and full containment is expected to take another 20 days.

It is good to see 40% containment.

(CNN) -- The stubborn Rim Fire, one of the largest wildfire in California's history, is 70% contained, the U.S. Forest Service said Monday night.

With rain and cooler temperatures in the forecast, firefighters who have toiled tirelessly for days will likely make further gains in the coming days.

Still, officials don't expect full containment until October 20.
