Hurricane Sandy
« on: October 25, 2012, 07:19:06 PM »
The current models show this storm will move into New Jersy/New York early next week. It will converge with an artic blast from the north and another storm system moving from the west. The Weather Channel Hurricane Center has posted this:

Quote
The Weather Channel's Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross said on Thursday evening that this storm "Will be like a nor'easter with a hurricane embedded in it."

Predictions are for $1 billion in damages. Those of you on the East Coast should be watching the weather.
O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. O Lord, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing. Jeremiah  10:23-24

I have been passively following that storm until today. I'm glad you brought it up. It's huge!

I think we in New England are sometimes a cynical lot.  We hear the term "storm of the century" every couple of years.   How many "storms of the century" can you have in the first 12 years of the century?   ::)  When we hear things like this, (direct quote from The Weather Channel) "Much of the U.S. East Coast has a good chance of getting blasted by gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe even snow early next week . . . .;" we sort of yawn and say, "so what else is new?   Sounds like a typical 'nor'easter' minus the heavy snowfall."  Many people I talked to today are rolling their eyes in reaction to the media hype.  "Gale force winds?"  That's a typical winter storm along the mid-Atlantic coast.  This is a category 1 storm and not likely to strengthen as it moves north into cooling late October waters.  Yes, it will cause damage (trees down, power outages, some flooding), but "Frankenstorm?"  Give me a break.
So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants:  we have done that which was our duty to do.  Luke 17:10

It's an interesting situation. The Weather Channel is more than skeptical of NYC's Bloomberg's statement. He is in Wally's camp and is not calling for evacuations for any part of Manhattan, at least not in today's update. Cantore shook his head in light of the combination of full moon's high tide plus 4 to 8 foot storm surges in the forecast.

Why do I think about the skeptics and scoffers in Noah's day? Someday they will be scoffing and saying it won't happen, and they'll be overtaken by something far worse than they have ever thought would come. If this storm turns out to be much less than predicted, then there will be less damage, but more room for scoffing next time. But what if it turns out to be as bad or even worse than predicted?

My skepticism is a result of the behavior of the news media over the years.  They hype up everything and provoke hysteria.  Swine Flu was a recent example.  They nearly always paint a worst-case scenario.  It improves ratings.

This is a big storm; no question about it.  But when I read the predictions of wind velocity, rainfall amounts, etc., it doesn't sound much different from what we've experienced before in this part of the country.  The dynamics of the storm are unique, of course, but methinks if this thing was headed for Nova Scotia, it would not be front page news.

They acquiesced. From the Weather Channel:

"Forget about what you know about (Category 1) storms," said Carl Parker, hurricane specialist for The Weather Channel.  "This is going to be on the order of one of the greatest storms we've ever seen in the Northeast. We're asking you not to worry about what it is, but what it's going to do."

Among the headlines from the region:

New York Mass Transit Shutting Down: Customers are advised to adjust their plans and travel early in the day as possible and not wait until the last train or bus. Anyone who does not leave for their destination before 7 p.m. runs the risk of being stranded when service is suspended.
New York Evacuations: Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered an evacuation of parts of lower Manhattan and the Rockaways, a low-lying area of Queens. The city has opened 76 shelters.
Stock Exchange Open: NYSE plans normal operations on Monday. The last time the stock exchange closed for weather was for Hurricane Gloria on March 27, 1985.
Schools Closed: The city's school system, which serves 1.1 million students, will be closed Monday.
Jersey Coast Evacuations: Evacuations were ordered by Gov. Chris Christie were as part of the state of emergency and thousands of people were making their way inland early Sunday.
Jersey State Offices Close: Christie said all non-essential employees should not report for work Monday.
NJ Transit Closes: The Christie administration announced that NJ Transit will implement a gradual system-wide shutdown of all bus, rail, light rail and Access Link service starting at 4 p.m. Sunday through 2 a.m. Monday.

We have concern for the safety of those involved, but our interest is also in the fact that these things don't just happen. We know the end of the story, the Bible tells us. Just before the second coming of Jesus, the earth will suffer great calamities. "Natural disasters" as they are called are not just going to happen. It is true that God does indeed cause some, but often it is the case that He has prevented them. Today, we are seeing more and more natural disasters just as the Bible predicted. Satan is not a figment of Christian's imagination. He is at work. The different circumstances that we see in this storm including the abrupt turning towards the mainland is not just a coincidence. So, while it could be nothing of great consequence, I would treat this storm as something different than what we have seen in the past. If not this storm, then there will be another and another that will do great damage to the United States. We have been seeing this with fires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes. There will also be disease and famine coming.

"Wave forecast models are predicting significant wave heights up to 50+ feet, and that is the average of the top 1/3, meaning that there will be individual waves that are even higher. The Perfect Storm, originally known as the Halloween Storm because of the time of year when it occurred, peaking in 1991 on the same dates (October 28-30) as Sandy, became a part of popular culture because of the tragedy at sea. This one has some of the same meteorological characteristics and ingredients coming together, but in an even more extreme way, and slamming more directly onshore and then much farther inland and thus having a far greater scope and variety of impacts." source

We ought to be prepared for many "natural" disasters that are coming. This could very easily be one of them. Take heed to the warnings being issued and find a safe place to be when it hits and ready to help those who may suffer.

Amen. And where is it headed? Straight toward the big cities on the east coast. Sigh.

As this thing gets closer the predictions become more dire.  I'm not as skeptical as I was before.  Maximum wind gusts for our area are predicted to be 50 mph, and we're a long, long way from NJ.

There are some quotes in the SOP about Satan's involvement with stormy weather, but I can't remember where.  Can't remember the key words.

The HMS Bounty was sent to Davy Jones’ Locker after the 17-man crew abandoned ship off North Carolina’s Outer Banks before the vessel headed for Davy Jones’ Locker, the Coast Guard reported.

Two or three members of the crew were still missing and the Coast Guard was battling 40 mph winds and 18-foot-high seas to find them.

Sandy has closed down New York City. The stock exchange has closed for the first time since 9/11. It is also an interesting truth that when such things happen, the shelves in the grocery stores empty very quickly. Gas stations are running out of gas. Many will be unprepared for the days ahead when disasters are more widespread and grocery shelves are empty across a larger portion of countries around the world. This the future in the last days just before the return of Jesus.

If we had that 9 magnitude quake on the west coast, multiple hurricanes in the midwest, forest fires and Sandy all at the same time, it will be a catastrophe yet unseen. There will be looters and killers galore.

Sandy should make landfall in an hour or two as it has speeded up. The storm is over 1000 miles wide. There are even predictions that waves on Lake MI could be as high as 28 feet.

Just imagine if some country also decides to pile on with a nuke headed our direction. Our protection agencies would not know which way to look.

Minimal effects here in my neck of the woods.  .89" of rain overnight.  Winds not excessive.  No power outage.  Coastal Maine got it a bit worse with maximum wind gusts in the 60-65 mph range.  Many people are without power along the coast.  No major flooding yet.
