Tsunami Debris Field on the Move!
« on: October 27, 2011, 04:37:08 AM »
Tsunami debris headed for Canada's coast

Up 20 million tons of debris from the Japan earthquake and tsunami is making its way to the west coast of Canada and the U.S.

The wreckage, including floating furniture, TVs, refrigerators and other flotsam, is travelling more quickly than expected, and could reach our shores by 2014, according to University of Hawaii researcher Jan Hafner.

"We don't want to create a panic, but it's good to know it's coming," Hafner told Honolulu's KITV.

How can something this massive be cleaned up? Steel cable nets? One house/refrigerator at a time? What a daunting task!

First debris from Japanese earthquake/tsunami reaches Olympic Peninsula.

HONOLULU, Dec. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The earthquake and tsunami that destroyed parts of eastern Japan in March 2011 washed vast amounts of debris into the Pacific Ocean. The buoyant portion of that debris is making its way toward the US. Based on models, first landfall of the debris could occur in the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) — designated as Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument by President George W. Bush — as early as January/February 2012.

It's here!

Japanese lumber and household goods have begun appearing on the British Columbia coast in what many locals think is the vanguard of a wave of debris from last March’s Japanese tsunami that will eventually clog West Coast beaches with cars, boats and even waterlogged houses.

“I found more debris in 10 minutes than I have in four years … and it’s all Japanese in origin,” said Perry Schmunk, Mayor of Tofino, a community of 1,600 on the west coast of Vancouver Island.
