Look at The Passion of the Christ

by Richard Myers

In the United States where The Passion of Christ is being released today, there is much discussion about the movie. The central theme of the film is said to be the suffering of Jesus upon the cross.

The revelation of God's love to man centers in the cross. Its full significance tongue cannot utter, pen cannot portray, the mind of man cannot comprehend. Looking upon the cross of Calvary, we can only say, "God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16.

Then it must be that all ought to take opportunity to see the movie? No. I don't believe so. In reading the Bible and The Desire of Ages I have been shown the most beautiful picture of Jesus Christ. There have been times when I have been meditating upon His loveliness and my eye has caught an artist's rendering of Jesus. How sad and at times how wrong to do such an injustice in mis-representing our God. If a two dimensional still picture can do such an injustice to God, I ask what can an actor do in a movie? How much "a look" can mis-represent the character our Savior!

The movie will reveal much truth, but it has ever been Satan's craft to mingle his error with truth. The lie is most deceptive when mixed with truth. God's children are to drink from the Fountain unpolluted by human traditions and human reasoning. What is being taught in the movie?

One cannot judge until one has seen. It is a Biblical principle. Does one have to drink in order to know the fountain is polluted? No. But, one must investigate that which he is about to feed upon. Do not drink blindly and expect to be protected from poison.

Our study is to be centered in the cross. Jesus is "the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world." Revelation 13:8. If this truth is mingled with error and passion is used to inculcate wrong principles, damage will be done. In the cross all influence centers, and from it all influence goes forth. It is the great center of attraction; for on it Christ gave up His life for the human race. This sacrifice was offered for the purpose of restoring man to his original perfection. It was offered to give man an entire transformation of character, making him more than a conqueror. To lead one to the cross and there to mingle important error would be very sad.

Let us take the opportunity we have been given as Bible believing Christians to share the truth as it is in Jesus. While many are thinking and discussing the death and sufferings of Christ, let us share the truth unmingled with error. Let us also rightly represent the character of our Lord to all we come in contact with. Let us not miss the opportunity we have to recommend the most beautiful portrayal of the Life of Christ that has been given to man in book form, The Desire of Ages.

We have identified our audience as they come forth from the theaters. Share the truth with those who hearts are moved. Share truth that will move more than feelings; share that which will move the intellect as well. It is time to labor for the Master!
